I love ocearch. Every shark week I buy myself and my adult kids new shirts and clothes to support you guys. We have been watching shark week since its beginnings and watch it every year. My oldest is 26 so we've been watching for at 20 years. Now its my turn, at 50 in 2023 ill be heading to Martha's Vinyard in hopes of seeing my first great white. I can't wait!
Research some of their criticisms. There's some surprising stuff that theyve been accused of and many researchers don't condone ocearch. Dead sharks, people who quit working for them because they believe they're harming the sharks... Things like that.

I initially discovered Ocearch thanks to Mary Lee’s story years and years ago. I know the batteries in the tracking devices have a shelf life and only last so long, but I was heartbroken when she no longer pinged her location. Here’s hoping she’s still alive and well swimming up and down the eastern seaboard!
Seriously!!!!! Absolutely amazing. These sharks are things of my nightmares but what a fascinating IMPORTANT creature. Must be preserved period!!!

I remember being Ina science class that got to video call the founder. That guy is so cool and he jsut sat down for 45 min from the airport. He was my inspiration to love science more than I already did.
I sure miss following Mary Lee’s journey 🦈 I learned about her when she came here to Jacksonville, Florida and she came to our area 3 years in a row ❤

It’s so amazing how their movements are. Like how far they have gone. They don’t sleep like us. They are always moving. They can kinda get into a sleep like state but that’s about it.

I think she’s surfaced around Atlantic City and Cape May a couple of times . As well I’m pretty sure she was the white the professor from New England called the beach patrol in fort Lauderdale and had them clear the beach because she was right out past the breakers

An absolutely brilliant initiative. Conservation, through protection and via a better understanding of these amazing animals that live in the oceans that we share, is so important. In AU, where I proudly come from, Great White Sharks are protected until they kill a human. Its there natural instinct and survival plan to attack a prey in order to survive. Unfortunately it can come at the expense of a human life. It doesn't happen often, but when it does it creates mass retaliation. We need to better understand where these magnificent animals migrate, live and feed so we can manage any further human casualties.

Did anyone from your crew get a new phone a few years ago in manahawkin nj at a target. The guy showed me pictures on the boat and said that tagged a huge great white. I wanted to know if it was this crew it was over 6 years ago maybe 7.

May I recommend tagging from the boat, it makes life much easier and it's much less stressful for the shark. As you guys are marine biologist Im sure you would know of the damage taking the sharks out of the water and putting them on a timber deck does to their vital organs.
How many around Australia? We would have to have some big sharks here

I dont think the colours are relevant but i think its not the best gor the sharks if u track them with devices just that u know where they are they are living creatures too

How did they know the sharks’ names? Cuz science?
In 2010 I caught a great white about ten feet long in the channel into Barnegat Bay while fishing from a boat. The shark towed our boat around for over two hours, and the DNR police stayed with us for about an hour. It came up once to look at us with an eye the size of a tennis ball. Eventually the tide started going out and the shark went nuts. It was caught on a pretty heavy rig with a whole bunker and a steel leader…I had been curious if we could catch a shark while fishing for the usual species like stripers, blues, flounder, sea bass etc. The DNR police thought it was the coolest thing. My reel drag was burned up and frozen, but it was worth it to see that such a large predator can be living so closely with unsuspecting people
1. At 10 ft, that was a youngster, a teenager.
2. I hope to God that you let the poor thing go.
3. Praise Jesus that you haven't met Lady Deep Blue. She is an ADULT, just over 20 ft. She would take a very dim view of your shenanigans.
@@SandraNelson063 there was no way that shark could be brought to hand. It was just way too big. So it had to be released one way or another. And the DNR police who were present reminded us that white sharks are a protected species that had to be released. Of course we had no idea what we were into until late in the fight. It was huge and refused to surface until late. The reel drag ended up frozen from the strain, and the shark broke off the line. As for other sharks “sticking up” for a hooked shark, that’s silly Disney fantasy land anthropomorphism stuff. No shark can possibly take a “dim view” of humans fishing. In fact, in many places now the sharks swarm fishermen and fishing boats and eat the fish they catch. They LIKE fishermen! In many places the sharks have turned into a bunch of Democrat freeloaders trying to snatch and steal handouts from hard working people. And they are so cutthroat that they frequently attack each other. I don’t know where you obtain the fish and meat you eat, but being the actual fisherman or hunter is the only honest way.

The stress you put on these sharks mouths with those hooks is not good. There must be a less painful and less stressful method
Its for research purposes. Maybe go and tell the Japanese and other South East Asian fishing companies to stop mass killings of sharks purely for the dorsal fin?

I love this show, but after hearing so many scientists say this is harmful to the sharks, leaves me at a crossroad.
I have wondered myself, if you remove this shark from its natural habitat of floating in water, is there any possibility of truth that placing them in the cradle is actually harmful to all of the organs over time, as these organs were never made to be out of water and crushed under the shark's own weight? I do wonder where is the research to prove this?
They are very careful. Part of the blood work that they do is testing stress levels. That's how they worked out the parameters of the operation. These are people who LOVE sharks.
