@@brendanwalsh108 yes, I think so. It’s like a mastertape, but for movies (when you go back to the mastertape, you will most often get a better result than sourcing the sound from somewhere else).
There should be an Oscar for film restorers! All of these super-dedicated people deserve recognition for the arduous task of reclaiming this film for future generations. Three cheers! ( I hope the same dedication and passion of restoration is given to A Hard Day's Night. Directed by Lester with a delightful script by Alun Owen, it captured the insouciance of the Fab Four and their timeless music.)
At 10:20, that guy was recalling how he was “dragged off to Shea Stadium” to see the Beatles. Man, how many of us would have liked, no loved, to have been “dragged off” to see the Beatles.
John Lennon would have said: "Oh please sir, can I be dragged? Oh please sir please, , drag me, drag me!" the on the way home he would say "You know, this has been a real drag...."
My parents took us on a vacation to England in early August 1964. While there, we drove up to Liverpool from London and saw the movie A Hard Day's Night there, about 2 weeks before it was released in the United States. It was so cool. The audience didn't scream like Americans did. Just the normal laughter and Applause.
@@69birdboy well, it was a bit run down then. They've cleaned it up a lot because of the Beatles Fame. As you say, the people were wonderful. The first time I ever had fish and chips was in Liverpool. I really enjoyed it. It was a really cool experience for A Yank. My mother had a penpal in Leeds during World War II and we visited his parents while we were there. Later in 1974, they came to visit us at our home in St Louis Missouri. I think it was August and this fellow was sitting outside and almost 100 degree weather! So I guess it's really true that Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the Noonday Sun. 😄
@@n0tyham - It's not just tourism that's improved northern cities but the UK has generally greatly improved since then. The UK was down the toilet by 1964 as we'd lost the Empire and were wiped out in WW2. It wasn't until the 80s that the country started looking 1st world again. I grew up in Leeds in the 1970s and most of the shops in the city were boarded up. All the old factories were falling down and long closed. There was a lot of poverty and young men turned to football violence as an outlet, so I grew up not even being able to go to games as every game had a riot after. Looking back it was like when I travel to a developing nation today. Not a third world one but somewhere inbetween like Russia. It wasn't until I went on a school trip to Austria that I realised what a shithole the UK was. Everything was clean and nice and lot of modern new buildings as well as everything pained and not falling down, also the people were clean and smart and articulate. Leeds was dirty and violent and people getting a glass shoved in their face in a bar fight was pretty common. They actually made all pint glasses so they shatter and clubs used plastic to stop it. Leeds is unrecognisable now they finally knocked down the factories and built nice new buildings. The cities are still full of drunken fighting every night though. But that's just British working-class culture. Idiots getting drunk, streaming and fighting is something you'll see in every single town and city. The lockdown has made walking in a city on a night possible which it wasn't before. Sorry, lockdown waffling.
I am a guitar player and a huge afficionado of the Beatles memorabilia- and yes, I AM old enough to have seen the original Help! AND Hard Day's Night as distributed to our local movie theater in our small town outside Toronto, Ontario, Canada in the sixties. I am delighted in watching your efforts. I wasn’t around when ‘Help!’ originally came out (I’m 33), but I own the restored version on digital and have watched it many times. I adore the movie (and The Beatles!) and am so grateful to these artisans for making it possible for people like me to enjoy this film and others like it as they were intended to be seen. Thanks so much for everything you do!
so they only had a print of the film, not the original negative and then they made a print from the print and then they digitalized that Print Print. isn't that a huge downgrade in Quality? they shouldve taken the original negatives that came right from the cameras back then and digitalize them and do the rest on the PC.
Maybe that's where George's tickertape scene exists.Its not on any MPI,Miramax or even the Criterion.I thought I had seen it back in the '70's on a local TV print.
@@chickenwing986 Back in the day they used to make a lot of exhibition copies from the original, cut negative. The negative can therefore actually be in worse shape than a well preserved print. But I think I saw them handling a negative somewhere in there. Looks like they printed a newly color graded positive print for scanning. This is the “correct” way to restore a film - to also make a traditional, photochemical restoration.
Nobody believes me when I say that my mom, my sister and I watched this movie, TWENTY TIMES, every time that It returned on the movies back in 1965. Each time we stayed for the next session. Crazy but we had fun.
i've always wanted to see new films that are based in the past (say the 80s for example) shot with film to make it more authentic and nostalgic, and i already knew using physical film was expensive and now i can see exactly why- would be very hard to find a good team to process it i can see that the best way to achieve the idea would be to process all the film after to digital and then edit the film rather than doing it all physically to the film itself- would be cool to see a square-ratio movie with old-fashioned film (always thought that Bohemian Rhapsody movie would've looked great with this idea in the Live Aid recreation)
I've got the beatles one album on blu Ray and I take my hat off to all the people involved in restoring all the videos that are included in the disk it's just a work of pure genius. Nothing more nothing less. The blu Ray of a hard day's night is just simply stunning. Yellow submarine was all restored frame by frame by hand and it shows the blu Ray is breathtaking. Thank you to all of you involved in this work.
thank you for all your hard work. this is probably gonna sound odd, but i remember when they did an overhaul of the statue of liberty (many years ago). watching them work from a distance, i couldn't help but wonder if the workers knew how much their work meant to everyone else. then i saw a documentary, and they were interviewed... they were as awed by what they were doing, as i hoped they would be. i am just as satisfied with you. so kudos to you too. and again, thank you

This is amazing, and I can only imagine that any "thumbs downs" come from die-hard Beatles HATERS, because the technical work is mind-blowing. But who in their right mind can hate the Beatles? It might be a judgement of HELP! it's hardly the most progressive of their movies and probably wouldn't be made today because of the quite dreadful racial stereotyping. People who do this type of work are among the special group people who do thankless work that the rest of us benefit from but never get praise or recognition for doing it. If I ruled the world these people would be recognised as the real heroes in our society rather than the social media stars. I might be slightly biased though because my father sat next to John Lennon when he was at school.
Amazing processes and skills of the restorers. When you see the work involved, and the time it takes, then movies like this are worth more than modern movies shot digitally, imo.

I was destined to play rock guitar from that time on because of the HUGE Beatles influence- even to trading and collecting Beatles' bubble gum cards and toys- and the incredible larger-than-life presence of greatness- the first film, television and arena rock stars when they appeared live over from England on the Ed Sullivan Show who also, seeing a trend brought onstage every rock act he could muster. Spring 1963 on a family. Vacation to Los Angels, we first heard on the radio the Beatles. Please Please Me. I was 12, my sis was 14 and it’s been a life long love ever since. As someone said, it was shocking to have unquestionably the two best rock singers in one group put with the most creative and innovative music and lyrics. That’s their success. They were the GOAT.
I think it was very rare that a Beatle record was played on American radio that early in 1963. The records were released on different labels (not Capitol) and they didn’t sell well at all. You might have heard one of the earliest ones on played on the air. I just looked it up, PPM was the first Beatle record played on US radio in February 1963, out of Chicago. Cool that you remember hearing it months before they arrived here.
I spoke with Walter shenson when he was restoring AHDN & HELP in 1981. When he told me that he had found that pieces had been ch popped out of the master film reels to make trailers I was stunned...
It's good that this is on YT, but, seeing as how this is all about restoring picture quality, there's no excuse for this being posted at only 360p. This should be at least at 720p, which is the lower end of HD. Preferably 1080p.

I have a dvd from 1998 and it looks great. AMC said they restored it in the 2000. I don’t know why this movie has so many problems keeping it clean. I saw it on tv almost every year in the 80’s .
I'm no expert, but there are a few inconsistencies in this film which should probably have been explained at some point. "Help" was shot on Eastmancolor, which was a single strip color negative process but when they are checking the film for damage, there are obviously three film strips, which presumably would be Technicolor, so not "Help". Also, it seems that in 2007, the first part of the process was a chemical restoration and this was followed by a digital scan and restoration. The equipment they are using is labeled "2K" so they obviously weren't trying to get to UHD standard, which I don't think even existed in 2007. From the comments below, it has been digitally restored again since then, although I can't find any information to suggest it has been scanned above 2K although 35mm film can certainly support at least a 4K scan. Also surprising that Dick Lester wasn't involved in the restoration. I would be curious to know why.
This movie is fascinating. It brought in Indian music and culture. John was killed by religious death cult like in the movie. Beatles looked changed like in the airport. Started using different drugs. Indian clothing and going to India. It’s a movie that most have never seen but it changed the world for a time.
For all the "Help" movie buffs, here's a trivia question. What was George Harrison doing in the jewelry store while the jeweler was attempting to determine what material the ring on Ringo's finger was made of?
I'm puzzled as to why your 35mm film was so degraded. I have a 30 year old vhs with the original film on (re released by Apple on that format), and the quality is perfect.
The part where he brings Paul's image out some wasn't properly tracked in the final version. You can see it suddenly getting lighter. Maybe they just ran out of time or something. I wouldn't have noticed it had I not watched this.
Here is a question I hope someone can answer: Why do we see A HARD DAY'S NIGHT pop up with some regularity, but not HELP! or YELLOW SUBMARINE? Can anyone tell me?
It is nice that someone have enough time to spend on such job. But, with scratches or without them, those are The Beatles in full greatness. Scratches are absolutely meaningless and unimportant. It is just like listening their music from old scratched LP and from a million time filtered and remastered digital source. Scratches are a mark of that era, and I'm not bothered with them at all. Maybe it's just me, but...
they would do even better with advanced digital restoration techniques of today (2022). some of the equipmente they were using is outdated now, and computers and restoration softwares are more advanced since this documentary was done.
So, the guy at min 10:25 says he's been a Beatles fan since he was a kid. Then goes on to say how great it is to be working on "One of the TWO movies they made". Guess what? The Beatles made 5 MOVIES in their career: 1) Hard Days Night 2) Help 3) Magical Mystery Tour 4) Yellow Submarine 5) Let it Be Any true Beatles fan would know this.
So did they use a master print (if there was one) or just some over used copy? The general problem with Help! is the complimentary cast, way too much of them on screen.

Assuming someone saved the negative. Try finding episodes of Dr Who from the 60s. The British didn't take care of film negatives very well and

Blue ray is nice but my few laptops don't take blue ray so it be nice to have both DVD and blue ray

Spring 1963 on a family. Vacation to Los Angels, we first heard on the radio the Beatles. Please Please Me. I was 12, my sis was 14 and it’s been a life long love ever since. As someone said, it was shocking to have unquestionably the two best rock singers in one group put with the most creative and innovative music and lyrics. That’s their success. They were the GOAT.
I think it was very rare that a Beatle record was played on American radio that early in 1963. The records were released on different labels (not Capitol) and they didn’t sell well at all. You might have heard one of the earliest ones on played on the air. I just looked it up, PPM was the first Beatle record played on US radio in February 1963, out of Chicago. Cool that you remember hearing it months before they arrived here.

I spoke with Walter shenson when he was restoring AHDN & HELP in 1981. When he told me that he had found that pieces had been ch popped out of the master film reels to make trailers I was stunned...

It's good that this is on YT, but, seeing as how this is all about restoring picture quality, there's no excuse for this being posted at only 360p. This should be at least at 720p, which is the lower end of HD. Preferably 1080p.

I have a dvd from 1998 and it looks great. AMC said they restored it in the 2000.
I don’t know why this movie has so many problems keeping it clean. I saw it on tv almost every year in the 80’s .

I'm no expert, but there are a few inconsistencies in this film which should probably have been explained at some point. "Help" was shot on Eastmancolor, which was a single strip color negative process but when they are checking the film for damage, there are obviously three film strips, which presumably would be Technicolor, so not "Help". Also, it seems that in 2007, the first part of the process was a chemical restoration and this was followed by a digital scan and restoration. The equipment they are using is labeled "2K" so they obviously weren't trying to get to UHD standard, which I don't think even existed in 2007. From the comments below, it has been digitally restored again since then, although I can't find any information to suggest it has been scanned above 2K although 35mm film can certainly support at least a 4K scan. Also surprising that Dick Lester wasn't involved in the restoration. I would be curious to know why.
This was restored about 16 years ago - in that time their have been advancements in film restoration - so if it was done today it would be even better

Somebody needs to restore this documentary of how they restored Help. And then make a documentary of that. That can then also be restored in 40 years.
This movie is fascinating. It brought in Indian music and culture. John was killed by religious death cult like in the movie. Beatles looked changed like in the airport. Started using different drugs. Indian clothing and going to India. It’s a movie that most have never seen but it changed the world for a time.

I'm puzzled as to why your 35mm film was so degraded. I have a 30 year old vhs with the original film on (re released by Apple on that format), and the quality is perfect.
The part where he brings Paul's image out some wasn't properly tracked in the final version. You can see it suddenly getting lighter. Maybe they just ran out of time or something. I wouldn't have noticed it had I not watched this.
Here is a question I hope someone can answer: Why do we see A HARD DAY'S NIGHT pop up with some regularity, but not HELP! or YELLOW SUBMARINE? Can anyone tell me?

It is nice that someone have enough time to spend on such job. But, with scratches or without them, those are The Beatles in full greatness. Scratches are absolutely meaningless and unimportant. It is just like listening their music from old scratched LP and from a million time filtered and remastered digital source. Scratches are a mark of that era, and I'm not bothered with them at all. Maybe it's just me, but...

they would do even better with advanced digital restoration techniques of today (2022). some of the equipmente they were using is outdated now, and computers and restoration softwares are more advanced since this documentary was done.
if you ever saw the version played on tv in 1981 its not what was releaed on vhs or dvd...its a different edit
you are correct michael. i saw that on tv back then and the song help used in the movie was a different version than the one we all hear now.
So, the guy at min 10:25 says he's been a Beatles fan since he was a kid. Then goes on to say how great it is to be working on "One of the TWO movies they made".
Guess what? The Beatles made 5 MOVIES in their career:
1) Hard Days Night
2) Help
3) Magical Mystery Tour
4) Yellow Submarine
5) Let it Be

So did they use a master print (if there was one) or just some over used copy? The general problem with Help! is the complimentary cast, way too much of them on screen.
Why wasn't there a well preserved master negative of such an important film?
I, for one, surely appreciate the painstaking tedious work these people did to restore this film!
