      without beating nepo, caruana or hikaru in 6 matches? Congrats to him, but the format is what it is. Magnus said it best during the commentary, that the unfortunate result of the format is the most deserving players don't always get to compete for the WCC. Nepo didn't lose once in 14 matches. So sure congrats to Gukesh, but he can't beat a player of Ding's calibre in a best of 14. There will be no Abasov's to feed points.

    Top players tend to feel uncomfortable about young stars making it into the elite. Gukesh already has the same rating as Giri, so I don't think it's silly to assume he is already as strong as him. I understand there might be areas of the game where he is not as complete as the top players, but when you sit across an opponent who can calculate faster than you, you are basically in trouble.

    It's a valid point. There are many top 10 players who went way out of the list despite not being old or retired. IIRC Peter Svidler in top 5 . And famously morozevich was world no 2. (Deservedly so at the time)

  • @chrisdavis2161
    @chrisdavis2161 Місяць тому +3

    everyone saying this didnt age well doesn't understand there is a huge difference between a top GM and a super GM. Gukesh did well in the Candidates but Hikaru, Ian and Fabi had a chance to win on the last game. That doesn't all of a sudden put you on the same level as them because he never won a game against them in the tournament. If Hikaru didn't lose both of his games against Vidit, Gukesh would have never gotten the chance to win the tournament

      @@Jitheguy acting like he's somehow arrived in the top echelon because he won the candidates Is a stupid analogy. You're missing the whole point of what Fabiano is trying to say. Gukesh is not at the level where Fabiano feels like he's fearsome amongst his peers . He's ascending. That's honesty. If Gukesh feels he's sitting at the round table, and a player who is actually sitting at the table says you're doing good but you're not on our level yet, you're arguing that "they never beat him, either?" A super GM CAN beat a Super GM. A top GM will struggle beating a super GM. Someone's going to have to prove themselves by winning because you don't become a threat to super GMs by drawing against them

In fact, he gave more credit to gukesh saying that he has good momentum and plays well in every event he plays, thats praise. Also thus was months ago, before gukesh went on absolute tear to get selected for the candidates.
