Ha! This is my standard trackday attire. Sometimes Goodwood say arms have to be covered, sometimes they're a little more relaxed about it. With just a shirt you have both options and it's nice and cool as well on a hot day.
Too floaty! - Eibach lowering springs (I went for the motech edition ones), M3/4 lower control arms and the underbody brace from the M240i. You can thank me later :-) You will have a car that feels amazing compared to stock. Well planted and goes where you point.
Eagerly awaited this video with me being a hard nosed RS owner and as much as I expected the BMW to not handle as well as the Focus I wasn't expecting the power that 140i has on the straight! What you may loose in the turns you will definitely make up on the level. OK OK OK...... It's a driver's car for sure, my only concern is that it gets away from you as the confidence increases. The sound when this little monster is being disciplined is intoxicating mixed with some tail out happiness I'm sure you were smiling all the way home. Great video as usual Mark.
I completely agree - up to 8/10ths it's a very well sorted car, chassis, brakes, all works really well. Those last two tenths are where it does seem to unravel a little. Not a problem on the road, not really a problem on track either, just something to be aware of and manage.
Brilliant video, Mark. You’ve inspired me to get my M140i on the GoodWood track. Might need you to give me some pointers, after seeing you drive like that. Very smooth and controlled.
The video I was longing to see from you, well done Mark. I suppose after the 1st Goodwood run you will be thinking of doing some suspension mods to remove some of that floatiness. If you do go ahead, then some of that road comfort will be lost obviously but it will be better for days like this video. One recommendation is a rear anti-roll bar from the likes of Whitleline or H&R, I don't know how much of an effect it will have on a RWD car but on my FWD it gives better feel & cornering is more planted compared to stock. Some of the comfort has been lost but I would not go back to a standard rear anti-roll bar & am still enjoying the new cornering feel my car offers now. Something to look into if you do go the suspension mod way. Cheers.
I was impressed with the power the 140 was putting down all the way to redline. The multiple camera angles and audio quality are top notch too. Looking forward to the rest of your sessions and evaluation of the car afterwards.
Does need modifications , I had an M135i with the same suspension and fitted H&R springs which helped a bit but its the dampers that are too soft. You could get some good coilovers, uprated LCAs and an LSD but I thought what the hell thats 4k so just bought an early F80 M3 instead. So glad I did..
Nice driving Mark. Goodwood is such an exciting circuit. It’s plain to see the m140i is a fast road car that CAN do a track session rather than a track refuge for the road. 👍
Well, the M140i is definitely not a track focused car, especially compared to the Focus RS. Did you lower the tire pressure after this stint? It should have improved your overall balance mid-end session.
Another good video. On mine I have a quaife, rear brace and M4 lower control arms. Cannot recommend the diff and M4 LCA's enough - really improve the turn in and transform the front end. Be interesting to see your videos after diff install
M4 LCAs I've heard a lot of good things about. That may be something I'll consider once my warranty expires but for now I'm happy enough with how it feels and responds.

Really good content Mark..I always feel you give your own honest opinions rather then following what everyone else says. I’m interested to know what you think of the diff when fitted. Are they really noticeable on the road and a must have as everyone says? I’m personally not convinced and feel like most say they are needed just to justify their wasted cash but we’ll see.
This is the trouble with online car culture. More often mods happen not because the car genuinely needs it but so the owners can say "check out my modz bruh". Unless you like hanging the back out I think on the road there's probably little benefit. On track though...I'll find out in May...
Hi, cool video, I've been watching over the last couple of months...one thing did surprise me ... you mentioned you've never had the rears with a higher pressure than the fronts on the road? As a 140i owner, but not a massive petrol head...I've always had the rears pumped more than the front - as per the pressure guide......could you explain why you would have the other way round?
While you dropping the new diff in, change out the springs for a set of Eibach and spacers all round.... or you could go coil overs and spacers, budget allowing.
You’ll find the PS4 tyres won’t give as much support under turning and braking as the PSS. It would be worth getting some eibach motech springs on for the next track day with the diff as they’ll be night and day for giving the car better body control
My friend Reg is having springs and spacers fitted soon to his passove suspension 140...I'm looking forward to seeing how it changes the car...we are planning a video comparing the two cars at some point.
Thank you! I spend far too much time on it all really...and whenever I think I'm done, I think 'oooh, I could just make a cut here or insert some b-roll there'. It's never ending LOL
Ford's track car Focus is the RS Focus.BMW's 140i/240i track car is the M2 and now the M2C. There are big differences. To get the M140i more trackable you will need the diff, improved brakes AND you really need to investigate your suspension options.I know of a couple of people that ditched the electronic dampers and replaced them with "normal" coilovers. Some have looked at M3(or M2, can't remember) control arms as well.Peruse the forums etc I'm sure you'll find people that have tried various setups for track work with their M140is. The Sport(+) mode sometimes feels actually less confidence inspiring, even on spirited public road drives. You did very well on the track to gather knowledge about what the car is capable of in its "raw" form. Probably the most important first step into modding the car to your specs.
The car goes well, I think a lot of the floaty wayward feeling is down to the tyres. Ps4 are a road tyre ( I use them), their behaviour will change as they get hotter on track. I would do a slighting lap, a quicker lap, then come in and adjust the tyre pressures down to allow for the heat effect on pressures. That way you will be set for the rest of the day, you may need minor adjustment as the day goes on and should raise pressures again as you drive home as the slower drive will not see pressures so high.
@@mainman2999 The Ps4 (non S) fitted has a softer sidewall than the more track focussed Pilot Supersport as fitted to the Focus RS.. My comments were based on how the movement of the car changed on track after a few laps. I was hoping for some improvement, not a solution. Ultimately the suspension would need to be changed, everything is a compromise and fitting a track biased "R" tyre on the current suspension set up would make things worse on track!
Glad your enjoying the car Mark, how come you got the PS4 and not PS4S? I'm on supersports and they are amazing, will be moving to 4s next. MarkCup70 I’m at Goodwood next Sunday for the petrolped meeting in the morning come along if you’re not busy. Looks a very fast track similar to Castle Combe by the looks of it ? Try and come along to Brands on the 13th September with opentrack ? Brilliant track if you haven’t done it before.
Interesting run out, part of the joy of the ///M cars is that you have to learn to drive them, I suspect the suspension would be ‘less’ floaty in a proper ///M and the brakes might be better as well. I did notice night and day between my E39 ///M5 in sport mode as opposed not in sport mode. But you can tell where the money goes, steering and chassis all mate up to the tyres - my ///M5 gave me incredible feedback, nothing else like it given its such a big heavy car. I would expect the LSD to transform the power delivery on initial application of power and give you more confidence to get on the power earlier and be a bit more aggressive/progressive to push the car on a bit. Should also help with brake balance under hard braking as well, it won't be like the Ford RS - you will have to think and plan ahead with each corner :-)
Mark, check up cdv (clutch delay valve) and try one track day with this removed. Relatively easy to remove/install. Gives you a much more direct cluch feel and more like in the old days. Cdv is just for making start and stop easy for the average driver. Top tip, worth a try! Your gear changes seems a bit slow. Mabe intentionally, but cdv has something to do with this. Cheers
I don't believe the 140 has the clutch delay valve fitted to it. As for my shifts, they're slow because I make them slow...unless going for lap times I think there's no point in rushing them and giving the drivetrain a harder time.
RS is a far more track orientated car, the m140i is a fast road car. I think some quality springs, LSD and good pads and you’ll wipe the floor with the RS. Or get an m2cs
@@leighhamilton5955 I dont even own a BMW. Just a 20 year old straight six that makes more power than both of these cars. RS fanboys are literally the worst it seems, you know a V6 Camaro is faster around the track than both a focus RS and m140i.... the fact you think the RS is a fast or competent track car says enough.
Good video as always Mark and thanks for sharing. I am biased (as I own one) but your smile was nowhere near as wide as when you were driving the RS. The rear brakes on the RS are definitely a weak point but the fun factor is right at the top of the hot hatches both on road and track. I think you need to try an M2 competition on track next if you are going up the car food chain. See if you can get a youtuber day at Goodwood with Joe Achilles 👍😎
The PS4 isn’t rated for the 140, the sidewall is way too soft I bought a set of PS4 on my M140 and the car instantly became floaty and unstable at high speed, even with the springs. I then binned the PS4 and then went back to PSS and the car went back to handling great, still not a track car but that’s not what the 140 is. Go back to PSS mark trust me, you’re not the only person who has this “floaty” feeling when they switch to the PS4 on the M140.
Bill Phelps I was the same bought a full set and the car instantly became wobbly, felt very loose! The actual grip is every day driving is better in the PS4 but you’re massively compromised on how the car feels and how stable it feels especially at high speed! PSS have less grip overall however they’re able to take more abuse and have a stiff sidewall so doesn’t feel floaty
I did have the benefit of an extra 10k road miles in the RS before I got it on track so had more time to become comfortable with the car. This was my first session as well so was naturally a little hesitant. Just a tiny mistake at Goodwood can hurt really badly!
The reason I ask is because the m140i isn’t but with some simple mods like springs wheel spacers etc can transform the car as joe Achilles proved when he went round faster than other big power m lites and his was standard bhp
DSC seems quite intrusive. And yeah it's floaty even on video. It's like a 140i but not like an M140i. BMW could have done so much more. A diff for starters.
ast5515 ive just got an m2 and in sport+ the traction control is too intrusive but if you do get it sideways and get some opposite lock on it suddenly cuts power again and tries to spit you in the other direction, its just more predictable with everything off instead. And when everythings off there are no excuses for not doing heel and toe;)
@@ast5515 This is a major irritation of mine, that you have to disable everything to leave the rev matching to the driver. I did get it all turned off later in the day though. When I go back in May with the diff fitted everything will be off from session one!
@@MarkCup70 This really bothers me about all modern cars. It's just software. I should be able to customize it. Rev match on or off. Door auto lock when you get moving. Mirror tilt down when you reverse. Duration of the coming home light. Turn anti stall on or off!!! These should all be in the settings, yet most modern cars either have these features or don't, but you cannot customize them. I guess you could say most people don't even know what these are but that's why you have default settings. If they don't know what it does, they don't change anything. Problem solved.
I can't tell you specifically what the mics are, I've had them a long time but they're cheap, £30 max each. I have them both fed into a Zoom H1 via a left/right channel splitter. No GoPro or inbuilt camera mic comes close for audio quality.
It seems stiffer suspension would be ideal here but may be a bit stiff on the road, if only there was a car BMW made that was capable on the track and the road 😉😂😂 I see an M car coming next!
If they made an M car in this body style (hatchback) I'd be making a case to myself for one right now...but they don't so I'm not. I think the 140 is perfect on the road and as that's where I do 99% of my mileage any sortcomings on track I can live with.
@@MarkCup70 You just seemed a bit disappointed with the feel of it (apart from the power of course, no issues there!). I look forward to seeing what happens next.
You need to just concentrate on your BM Mark the RS is no more. You make good vids & people are watching for that reason. The lsd will make a huge difference but only when combined with decent suspension.

As much as I dislike the unreliable and poorly built RS, it was always going to win in this setting - the Ford was designed with bobble-hatted, snore fest track day warriors in mind! The BMW is a fast road car through and through, so will need money throwing at it to get it near what the Ford does as standard out on a track. .
Michael Hesford another deluded RS owner - there are cars out there on their third gasket now (the supposed correct, non-Mustang one) and it’s well-known that the open deck design can’t handle the thermal cycles the 2.3 engine generates. Get your head out of your arse and do your research ‘dick’.
Jayco you obviously don’t like the rs for some reason ! But I’m sick to death of hearing about its reliability!! Get over it !! The car is amazing ! Yes it’s not the fastest but who gives a shit ! It looks amazing and drives amazing
Why were you so scared?? Dare I say it but if you were more confident and just pushed it a bit more then you would have actually enjoyed 360bhp through the rear wheel drive chassis. Don't think you were ever close to the limit. Very disappointed mark I expected more from someone who's driven a bit. Your passenger wasn't exactly helping with positive comments either
Tell your mate to do his feckin chin strap up properly - i.e. as tight as possible. There's more chance of it severely injuring him, and possibly you, than there is of it staying on his head during a crash.

Great video, waited to see how the BMW would compare to the RS, you’re right , you need a very different approach with this car.
@@MarkCup70 good, nothing wrong with a bit of mechanical symphaty
Knut Endre Ringhagen Clutching in and out too fast can cause a traction loss also makes you look like a tool lol
Gloves?
Brilliant video Mark really enjoyed watching many thanks so much better with all the camera views 9.0 mpg lol
yep nice set of coilovers or good set of springs, coilovers if you have the money
Great video Mark. Just wondering why your not using the throttle on downshifts? Does the car do it automatically?
He mentions towards the end that the car rev matches automatically
Cheers 👍🏻 I didn’t get that far into the video sadly as my break was over 😩
Left foot break and be constant back on the power. Feathering the throttle
RS is a far more track orientated car, the m140i is a fast road car. I think some quality springs, LSD and good pads and you’ll wipe the floor with the RS.
Or get an m2cs
Another BMW dreamer 😂😂😂😂😂
@@leighhamilton5955 I dont even own a BMW. Just a 20 year old straight six that makes more power than both of these cars.
RS fanboys are literally the worst it seems, you know a V6 Camaro is faster around the track than both a focus RS and m140i.... the fact you think the RS is a fast or competent track car says enough.
Leigh Hamilton lmao enjoy ur car getting stolen and your engine blowing up rs owner BAHAHHA
great vid mark look so much fun cheers steve:-)
Ok, seen enough. This wouldn't be the car for me. I prefer your RS. Can you get the Civic Type-R next. 😀. I value your opinion between cars!
Ha ha, there'll be no CTR on my driveway any time soon, sorry!
And the prophecy begins to come true 🔮 Mr Cup ascension into an M3 Mark very soon 😊✊🏼🏁
Excellent video has usual Mark big thumbs up buddy :)
Great vid Mark loved it...felt like I was in the car :-)
The PS4 isn’t rated for the 140, the sidewall is way too soft I bought a set of PS4 on my M140 and the car instantly became floaty and unstable at high speed, even with the springs. I then binned the PS4 and then went back to PSS and the car went back to handling great, still not a track car but that’s not what the 140 is. Go back to PSS mark trust me, you’re not the only person who has this “floaty” feeling when they switch to the PS4 on the M140.
Damn...just bought PS4s after rave review on one of the forums..
Is this the same Mark driving. He's not quite driving like the man possessed was in the RS
I did have the benefit of an extra 10k road miles in the RS before I got it on track so had more time to become comfortable with the car. This was my first session as well so was naturally a little hesitant. Just a tiny mistake at Goodwood can hurt really badly!
Jb4+eibach springs= Pocket rocket
Even without it's no slouch 👍
Is the rs set up for track in standard trim would you say
The reason I ask is because the m140i isn’t but with some simple mods like springs wheel spacers etc can transform the car as joe Achilles proved when he went round faster than other big power m lites and his was standard bhp
Apart from me killing the brakes in mine the RS is a very well sorted car at handling the track. Very sharp, very direct, lots of grip.
I had the same sensation, lower it and new dampers at least,it transforms the car
Love the channel, did you make the 98db? or 105?
It was a 105 day and my standard 140 registered 91 LOL They're so quiet as standard!
BMW 140i is a fast car but very unforgiving control wise.Good video mate 🍻👍🏁🏎💨
DSC seems quite intrusive. And yeah it's floaty even on video. It's like a 140i but not like an M140i. BMW could have done so much more. A diff for starters.
ast5515 ive just got an m2 and in sport+ the traction control is too intrusive but if you do get it sideways and get some opposite lock on it suddenly cuts power again and tries to spit you in the other direction, its just more predictable with everything off instead. And when everythings off there are no excuses for not doing heel and toe;)
@@leokaravasili9649 Auto rev matching is fine. As long as you can turn it on or off regardless of the drive mode...
But DSC being so intrusive is bad.
Nice video Mark. 👍
What mics are you using?
I can't tell you specifically what the mics are, I've had them a long time but they're cheap, £30 max each. I have them both fed into a Zoom H1 via a left/right channel splitter. No GoPro or inbuilt camera mic comes close for audio quality.
MarkCup70 that’s great, thanks! 👍
Looking fast. Cant wait for the review with the lsd.
Total novice question ... why the racing gloves, don’t you get more feel with direct hand to steering wheel?
It's for traction when your hands get sweaty
@@somat111 Exactly this 👍
Now you have the bimmer bug, you'll be in an M3 next. 😁 Great video though!
Also good video mate. 👌
Whats with the shaky steering?
Fighting with the car yo.
@@MarkCup70 not this video particularly but ive noticed it in a couple of the m140i vids
A set of Avon Street legal slicks perhaps.
Auto blip ? Or am I just to hungover here
Nope, not too hungover, it rev matches automatically on downshifts unless you disable all safety systems in which case everything is up to the driver.
Now i know why there are so many 140's on copart lol
It's floaty .. floaty.. floaty. We get it 😂
Yeah 😊, it was a busy few minutes and that was the only adjective that sprang to mind that seemed to fit what I felt LOL
You need to just concentrate on your BM Mark the RS is no more. You make good vids & people are watching for that reason. The lsd will make a huge difference but only when combined with decent suspension.
Should of got the zf8 box
Why?
As a daily driver perhaps but for fun an auto gearbox is a backwards move.
@@MarkCup70 imo much better especially on track.
Better how?
@@MarkCup70 I'll let this guy explain it better than me www.thrillist.com/cars/nation/lets-admit-it-manual-transmissions-need-to-go Anyway I've had a rethink and in your particular case, with your dodgy nervous steering and twitchy hands, you're much better suited to a manual, otherwise you'd be up and down the box like Tommy :D
Great video. How come an M135i did a 1.25.1 and the RS 1.26.4 on the top gear test track. As Chris Harris says many times, embrace the body roll.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Top_Gear_test_track_Power_Lap_times
I don't mind roll, it lets you know what the car's doing, how the weight is transferring 👍
Looks soo much fun with M140i than the focus RS.
Celestial Being I wouldn’t say more fun ! I’d say more scary ! I’d prefer to be going in those corners full pelt knowing I’ll be able to come out alive !
I thought the opposite. Trepidation in this video and loads of smiling, excitement and positivity in the RS video.
As much as I dislike the unreliable and poorly built RS, it was always going to win in this setting - the Ford was designed with bobble-hatted, snore fest track day warriors in mind! The BMW is a fast road car through and through, so will need money throwing at it to get it near what the Ford does as standard out on a track. .
Unreliable !! Get a grip you dick ! It had a problem at the start that’s been fixed
Hahahahaha Dear me we are all car owners every car has its pro’s an cons anyone would think you’d shat on each other’s dinner
Weirdo Bagins I just get sick of people slagging the rs off ! It’s a great car.. and like you say they all have there pros and cons ! Well said
Come on mark get the other sessions loaded
The next one is just about to drop...

I run standard pressures on the road...but on the road I never work the rears enough to get the pressure higher as most load (steering and braking) goes through the front tyres. On track of course it's completely different with the rears doing a huge amount of work.
