  • We are constantly asked by clients what the difference is between cable internet service and a dedicated internet service like T1 or fiber.
We’ve covered this many times but let’s go ahead and cover this again.
Everyone we work with has the same concern:
Why should I pay more money for less bandwidth when I get hundreds of Mb from the cable company?
So, let’s review the differences in service to answer this question. The cable company markets all kinds of bandwidth packages with all the trimmings.
Todays packages claim performance speeds of 100’s of Mb at unbeatable prices.
So, how are they able to sell so much bandwidth for less than the other service providers?
The difference comes down to the network. The cable company markets all kinds of bandwidth packages with all the trimmings.
So, how are they able to sell so much bandwidth for less than the other service providers?
The difference comes down to the network.
    Network Challenges
    • all clients (business & residential) share the same available bandwidth
    • performance is not guaranteed
    • network availability is not guaranteed
    • this is a ‘best effort’ service
Here’s why, at times, the cable network is challenged . . . Cable Network services are primarily designed for residential use. Business customers are competing for the same bandwidth.
When more subscribers join the network, overall performances suffers for everyone -including your business
Why? Everyone has to share the same network ‘pipe’. This is why performance is not guaranteed.
Additionally, when there’s a network-based outage, business clients are not given higher repair priority. On a shared, best-effort network, all subscribers have to wait for the network issue to be resolved. Dedicated Internet Access, while not as ‘fast’ is valued because it is more consistent than cable.
Access types include dedicated wireless, T1, fiber, fiber over ethernet.
    What does ‘dedicated’ mean?
Your connection is connected to a specific router with a network path that is privately dedicated to your business!
For most business applications, especially those that are hosted offsite, a dependable consistent connection is critical for performance.
Remember, speed is only one part of the equation!
A connection that drops packets of information, latency (delay) or weak upload speeds will result in bad performance.
Business applications (like voice and video) need a connection that has the other performance pieces in place!
A dedicated internet service may not be as fast on speed alone.
However, over time (weeks, months and years) your applications will run better because the connection is stable and predictable.
Your internal network is easier to manage. One final note, our best service providers DO NOT sell services to residential customers.
Therefore, their networks are smaller and easier to maintain.
Business networks are not expending resources for millions of residential customers.
Business Internet providers build networks and services focused on business needs.
Cable is an very good secondary option.
However, as we’ve said for years, if you’re looking for dependable, performance, a dedicated business service is the better investment.
