@@msrustyspatula8679 maybe you could do it part time, that way even if there’s not that much demand u still get money but if demand is extremely high u can become full time.
@@msrustyspatula8679 it’s not possible to make a profit as a reputable breeder unfortunately, but if you love rats then it can be a wonderful side project and very enriching
@@msrustyspatula8679 yeah you will not get any profit money wise, from breeding rats, the care for them will cost you a lot and most breeders only sell their rats around £15-30 each or for 2 (no rep breeder will sell their rats in less then a pair) my dad use to breed rats as a hobby and lost money not made it. But he loved it which is why a lot of people do it and it’s known as a hobby more then anything and people do it because they love rats not money 😂😂

Me too! He might end up staying very light on his points as the rex apparently dilutes the colour a bit
@@Emiology I’m not sure if this is a good comparison, but my Siamese texel mouse got VERY dark points, as did most of her siblings. It’ll be interesting to see how the same visual expression differs between species :).

@@Chiya_Yun I’m referring to the “points” of an animal where, if they’re Siamese, they get the darkest. Think the tip of the ears, tail, and lil’ feetsies! A Siamese animal will get darkest where it’s coldest, and can even get dark patches when shaved in some animals because their previously warm area just got colder and the body is compensating with darker fur. It’s cool! :)

Just so everyone knows (as decent reptile breeders/owners know already) - it is ILLEGAL in the UK to feed live animals (Mice or Rats, etc.) to other creatures creatures
Mice, Rats, etc. are SENTIENT BEINGS and PROTECTED BY LAW!
@@maryoleary5044 I love rats, but I also respect that rats and mice are food for many oher species. In nature they oftne get preyed on. So I love rats and animals who eat rats. Rats are cute but that doesnt excuse them from being part of the food chain. All animals are col even if they need to eat rats. Even animals that eat live rats.

I think all reptiles can eat frozen thawed rodents. Some are just really picky and don't want to.

I had one where it didn't matter what I wore, she'd burrow down till she was under every layer to get to my shoulder. I loved her, but for her entire life I had scratch marks on my shoulder if I dared to wear anything that made it awkward for her.
Oooff…. The scritches and scratches… I recently adopted 3 boys. One is super bonded to me already, but I had started working with him in the store that I work at. The other two boys are going to take longer, but that’s because they were still babies when I got them. I’m like, ouch, that spot is tender, oh wait, that’s where the babies were last night…
I'm always amazed by the amount of floof that can fit in just one rat. They are beyond adorable.
I hate how I went to a breeder and not only were they extremely aggressive but one is also basically dying because of how bad her health is. Theyre my first rats and they put me off a bit but I love them to death. Ive done everything I can for them and theyre a lot better but I do have to spay one of them. I got two otger rats from a better breeder and the difference is MASSIVE. so nice, never bites (only one if I wake her up), health is way better, so social rtc
I had a similar experience
I got 2 girls one is almost 2 dying of respiratory issues since she was 4 months she has had constant painful respiratory issues from genetics and has aged horrible the other dyed at only 1y 2m Fromm multiple tumours I had to pts and it was honestly traumatic
I now have 9 rats 4 boys 5 girls all rescues and they are all healthy except for that one 2 year old who unfortunately I expect to pass within this month
And I talked to the breeder asking for advice and she completely ignored me I asked her questions about her motives for breeding and got ignored
I’m now extremely educated with rats and it is disturbing she is considered one of the best breeders in my area
@@ashleyking3218 im so sorry you had that experience. Its so unfair to the rats and the fact that we trust them enough to give us good rats and our experience becomes horrible.
The funny thing is the second one isnt an official breeder. Just a really nice couple with rats and they take care of them like theyre their kids. Id choose them before anyone else tbh.
HOW can they be considered the best breeder?! A good one would NEVER give you dying rats. Christ. I reported mine but not sure if anything came out of it.

I love the breeders I got my two rats from! They let us come over every few weeks and they professionally trim the rat's nails and sell us the rat food mix they make that’s much healthier than what's in stores. And they always get so excited to see my babies each time I bring them 🥺

When you first showed us Bagel peeking out of the carrier he reminded me so much of my little Elwood. Agree completely with you about not getting rats from pet shops. Mine came from a breeder somewhere in Norfolk and they were instantly friendly and were healthy and happy. The dog's next door probably wanted to come and see your new additions.

Its definitely an investment, time and energy >_>.. and constant, endless cleaning .. i have 4 rats and they make me happy, but the money that goes into treating their tumor and respiratory issues for each rat, and xray scans really adds up a lot.

I had a female dumbo Siamese with red eyes and she would sway side to side for the depth perception. It has been almost 6 years since my last rat passed and I miss them so much. I said I would never get anymore because it’s always heartbreaking to lose them but watching your videos has made me reconsider getting a few more one day. It’s too bad reputable breeders are hard to come by in Canada though…
The first passing is the hardest :’(

I have been binging your videos for the past day because I lost one of my ratty girls, Artemis, to Pyometra suddenly a day ago. Your videos bring me so much joy, and I was very excited to see a new video right when I really needed it. CongRATS on the new babies, I can’t wait to see them grow :)
Watching all of your rat videos just gets me so excited for my own boys, I've been researching rats for 6-7 months now and I've wanted them for years. Now im so close and just 3 weeks away, can't thank you enough for all the information you have given me along with my other resources, you've shown rats in a light to be kind cuddly creatures, which is so true. Watching your videos has been such a good distraction and I can't thank you enough!

I know! I catch him in certain lights and my heart stops a little bit, but in a good way because of how much he reminds me of sprout. He’s different enough for it to not be painful though!

How did I luck into your dream rat on my first look at rats? Tachigami actually just passed away a few days ago. He was honestly the chillest boi. I didn't know the white Siamese rats also had motion parallax! I thought just the rats with the ruby eyes did this. I have three boys left, one was his cage mate at the store and I think they may have been brothers (they did have quite a few features that were similar), because he was particularly upset. Eventually I want to foster and adopt out little beans to share the joy they have given me! Out of all the rodents I have owned, rats have been my favorite. So many cuddles
I’m picking up my 2 girls on Sunday. I made the mistake of letting my 2 year old daughter name them, so now I’m stuck with Betsy and Mango. My last 2 rats lived until they were 3. Don’t worry, the small child will never be alone with the rats.
Pudding looks just like my Flora, but Flora has a little cream on her nose and her eyes are Ruby 🤗

I just got 3 new rescue dumbo girls over the weekend, one is a black rex, another is a charcoal rex, and the third is a powder Russian blue or a Mink I believe. They're so great and I already love them so much!

Rats are the best pets for me, bar none. I've never had so much fun taking care of animals until I got rats. I wish my financial circumstances were better because I would just live in a giant rat cage 🤣

I'm dying, they're so cute. I just got two baby saimese girls (also my dream babies), and they do the swaying thing pretty much everytime they focus on something too. Even my ruby eyed girl I had didn't do it nearly as much as these babies, I had no idea it was a Saimese thing. I find it so adorable

I got 3 rats from a not so great breeder last year. 2 are still skittish and nippy. The 3rd got picked on but is so lovely to handle. Last week I got 2 baby girls from a really good breeder and the difference is incredible. My boy is neutered and so far he's really happy to have nice company. Good breeders make all the difference ❤🐾
At my local humane society last year in April I was told of a rat they had that was by itself. I immediately bought and set a cage, adopted her, then went to a local breeder to get get a friend. This breeder is awesome. She only adopts out pairs :). So I got 2 friends for the singleton. Since then I've rescued 3 other singletons from various places. The only 2 rats still alive are the ones I got from the breeder. The others are never old but they just weren't kept well or bred well. I will still alrways rescue a rat from any situation in any condition. I feel good giving them friends and good food, play time outside the cage, and love. Even though there's vet bills and sadness when they die. Xo

im adopting 2 dumbo rats from a pet shop soon and although im not too keen on the fact that not all rats from pet shops are treated well are are just bred to make money, these rats have been handled since they were little because they had respiratory problems quite early on, however they are all healthy now and i cant wait to give them a better home, they are now around 4 months old and i cannot wait

I just got my 2 new baby boys yesterday! I haven't named them yet because I don't know enough about their personalities but I have an inkling that one of them is going to be named Bergamot because he's energetic with a happy disposition and loved basking in the sun coming through the window on the car ride home. I can't wait to get to know your boys as well as my own!

I started watching you because I got feeder rats as pets. Unfortunately 2 died very young so I looked for breeders and I picked them up yesterday. I think she was breeding for money but I found and breeder that’s further away for the future.

I'm having the same experience here, my first rats and the two I added later have all been rescues and took ages to get to the point that I could handle them and the two babies I adopted this week were also rescues *but* originated from a breeder before needing rehomed. They're so friendly!
Ratties Horace & Herbie travelled from one area of Hampshire to another thanks to my fab friend! They were a bit lively then settled down to enjoy the aircon 😀😌😌🤗

I broke one of your recommendations and bought two albino rats from a Petco. They were conceived at and born at the store, due to a mixup a male and female were housed together at the store. The rats that I bought are somewhere between 2 and 4 weeks old, and brothers. I've been watching what videos I can and trying to figure out what to expect from them at their age. Right now they poop where they sleep and are still a little skittish, but woke up wrestling with each their first night at my home. Lol, I also can't tell them apart.
The day before yesterday my little old rat man died at 2 years and 8 months old. I wish I had baby rats to switch my focus to, but my family and I agreed a while ago that we need to take a break from rats. So I'll just watch this video...

Our boys are from a pet store that we use to get fish from. I saw them in a filthy tank, swaying and staring at the wall, i started crying and bought them both. The employee used thick gloves and grabbed them by their tails. we both yelled "NO!!!" It was so frustrating. I realized it was a rescue after all. I hadn't planned on it, but left with them, crappy food, and a HUGE bird cage (because it was more suitable than any of the small cages they had) It took a few weeks for them to come to us, but then they took to us quick. Needless to say they are spoiled, and we hate that store now. They have two complete different personalities. They don't even like the same food, and get bored quick. So far have proven to be more expensive than my old dog. but we love them so much. Nibbles and Marco.
My first rat I guess you could say was a rescue. I started watching your channel and knew he needed a buddy and did not want to go to a rat mill!! Found a local breeder. Our new little guy is so sweet and timid. So soft. They cuddled immediately. I gave the gal twice asking price just to help her out :)

Black eyed siamese rats are so adorable ❤ I finally got a black eyed siamese dumbo dwarf a few months ago. Out of my 6 boys, he definitely has the cutest face. His name is patootie and I love him so much!

What cuties!! Good luck with introductions, I look forward to hearing how they go. I got 6-week old male baby rats at the beginning of March 2021, and after some extended and re-extended quarantining due to health issues, started trying to introduce them in late April, and it's mid June now and they're STILL not living with my resident rats, because the babies scream bloody murder if the adults so much as sniff them. One baby bit my alpha's front pinky and made it bleed and I had to pause intros while it healed. What an ordeal!!!!

They are so, so very cute! I had 3 boys. One boy was an absolute sweetheart. His brother somewhat tolerated me and the other brother bit me every single day for the 2 and half years I had him. I wish I had found a better breeder

I think the hard thing is to walk away if you see any red flags when you go to a breeder to collect your pets. You're likely to feel obligated to take them since you'll already have agreed in principle and might feel uncomfortable saying "I don't like the look of this place" to someone's face. You'll also face the same dilemma as in a pet shop where you want to save them but might be perpetuating a bad cycle. I ended up in that spot and fortunately my rats were happy and healthy but I later heard things about the breeder that made certain things click about little things I saw.
One thing I look for is how interested is the breeder in you? The best ones I've dealt with (for rats and other pets too) asked me tons of questions about my experience, what I fed them, did I have a vet I used etc. The other thing (not sure if you mentioned it) is ask if you can see the parents. A good caring breeder will have no hesitation in saying yes, and will most likely be very happy to show off their pets.
