“Here I Am”: Meet a Descendant of One of 272 Enslaved People Sold on June 19, 1838, by Georgetown U.

  • We look at another significant June 19 in the history of slavery in the United States: June 19, 1838, when Jesuit priests who ran what is now Georgetown University sold 272 enslaved people to pay off the school’s debts. In 2016, Georgetown University announced it would give preferential admissions treatment to descendants of the Africans it enslaved and sold. “Ours, as Americans, is an uninterrupted line of inheritance that many of us refuse to believe that we are descendants of,” says Mélisande Short-Colomb, who is one of the first two Georgetown University students to benefit from legacy admission for direct descendants and serves on the Board of Advisors for the Georgetown Memory Project.

Ok now let's start with the rest of the 30 to 40 million African Americans still catching hell in this nation. We are not immigrants, we didn't come here "willfully" looking for a better life.

Actually, around half of "African Americans" are not descended from US slaves. Half emigrated to the US over the last 100 years from around the world. Not only from Africa, but from South/Central America, Caribbean and various places. Today there are still tens of thousands of immigrants trying to get into the US.

I cannot imagine that! I try, and I try to be realistic about it, but it is something I am unable to conceptualize. It's just too painful to look at how horrible the world is today, and acknowledge that humans have been this cruel , greedy, and morally and spiritually corrupt for all of history. And now the evil people who own the USA want to abolish the history of their cruelty.

Black people bought land, built homes and businesses. They had all the skills necessary to build their own economies b/c they'd already done it for white America. All white Americans had to do, was live and let live. But instead of seeing blacks as allies, every step in black advancement was seen as a threat to be destroyed. If they had land the USDA sold them bad seeds so they'd produce low crop yields. White farmers got training and subsidies, while the federal officials worked with local officials to take land through taxes, creation of no resale zones or brute force violence. Eminent domain means the US can take the land back whenever it chooses. Black bodies were used as currency. Futures in black labor was used as collateral for credit loans. The repayment for those crimes against humanity needs to be in the form of currency, preferably Euros.

To truly acknowledge any wrongdoing the oppressor should recompense the victim for the wrongs he did; not give some abstract gift or insincere apology; all of which mean absolutely nothing. The scriptures are very clear about this:
    The laws of restitution
If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it ; he shall
restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.
If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there
shall no blood be shed for him.
If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him ; for he
should make full restitution: if he have nothing, then he shall be
    sold for his theft.
If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or
ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.
If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall put
in his beast, and shall feed in another man’s field ; of the best of his
own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make
    restitution.
There is no sweet talk, no apologies, no federal holidays that can reimburse our people for the myriad wrongs perpetrated against us all through the centuries and continuing on to this day.

Not only Jesuits or Catholics. Not only African descendants. My Great Great Grandmother was an enslaved Native American. Sold to another church group for a sack of flour (actually two children) - the American Indians weren't nearly as valuable as African imports (sounds sooo cold but true).'When slavery was abolished my GG Grandmother's owners said she was their "adopted daughter" therefore never having to grant her freedom.

I think the time for acknowledging the wrongs committed against there first peoples is coming, especially as we see more representation in places such as Congress. Keeping it real, there is nothing this country can do to make up for the atrocities, injustices done over the past 400 years, however, there should be efforts made to do everything possible to open up opportunities and make life better for their descendents. The system of federal administration, etc, needs to overhauled and reimagined as something designed by and for the tribes, not by random white people. Barring smooth, orderly transitions, I see the activists and younger generations more and more stepping up to defend indigenous rights and values. I'm confident this movement will grow in strength and numbers.
About the slavery legacy in this country, it is something that needs to be addressed, understood and dealt with. Recently, I found out that one of my ancestors/some of my ancestors on my father's side were not only Pamunkey tribe, but also slave owners. My mom treated it as a kind of "'See there, it wasn't just white people' moment," but I felt this pain in my heart that my family/ancestors owned people as property. To me nothing about that revelation was political or abstract, my thoughts were also about these unnamed individuals, and what happened to them following them following this will. Hopefully, I will be able to find out more.
As much as this history is painful and shatters the mythic the "land of the free," I think it's important that we're having these conversations, that this legacy is finally being acknowledged, so we can deal with it and grow from the experience.

This lady Melissa, did not say how she was able to tell she was a descendant of the 272 slaves who were sold by the Jesuits in 1838.
1838 is significant for Afro-Caribbean people because it was in that year that the slaves in the British Caribbean colonies were freed. The Jesuits knew that freedom was not far away for those slaves in America, even though it took another 27 years for this to occur.
What does this tell us about America? It tells me how brutal, dishonest and cruel the American enslavers were because it took two and one- half years for the slaves to be told they were free. How can anyone say the American Civil War was not about slavery. They were willing to fight their own country just to keep the institution of slavery. This is why the critical race theory must be taught in schools. If the States ban this teaching, then parents and private institutions have an obligation to teach it. Amen

I don't want to sound disrespectful of this aged woman, but she is a bit confused in her logic. If you were violently brought here in 1619-1865, spent 246 years in direct chattel slavery; then your descendants spent the next 100 years, 1865-1965, fighting Jim Crow, segregation, lynching, murdering, burning, raping, terrorizing, victimized in over 200 massacres, convict leasing, peonage schemes, joblessness, lack of quality education, redlining, economic exclusion, fighting for civil rights and citizenship rights, on and on; and then you spend the last 56 years, 1965-2021, fighting, school to prison pipeline, criminalization of black people, massincarceration, predatory lending practices, redlining, housing insecurities, gentrification, health disparities, water insecurities, food deserts, and a generational wealth gap built on the accrual of all these centuries of wealth extraction, sabotage and oppression, you are not the same as someone who voluntarily decides to come into this country, even if they don't receive you the way you believe they should. Stop giving away our heritage and experiences to support others, when American Descendants of Slavery (ADOS) are wealthless in the most expensive country on the planet. We have to focus on ourselves before we take in anyone else.

Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France Spain Portugal, Angolans who migrated from Portugal after the fall of the Moorish empire, Sephardic Jews, Muslims, all disguised as Crypto Jews, New Christians, Huguenots, Protestants all white and black peoples. Bristol, a famous port when British government then deported, many willing, many kidnapped children men and women, undesirables, beggars, prisoners of wars, mostly Irish citizens. Facts and history hidden most as indentured servant, tied in 7-10 years contract, then perpetual slavey for many.
Cutting down forest, fighting Native tribes, many of which were being enslaved in other places, over the centuries. This went on all over the West Indies, they to natives from America to West Indies and back and forth.

Slavery was normal in every culture of the world since humanity began. Even "free" people lived a life of utter poverty, oppression and despair until the 20th century. Pointing the finger at one group of people for the brutality of the past is kind of ignorant and wrong, and its kind of racist. Half of the US black population are not even descended from US slaves. Half have immigrated to the US in the 20th century, and it continues today, with tens of thousands of immigrants trying to get into the US every year. People are even throwing their 4-5-6 year old children over the border walls.
I dont think this victimhood narrative is healthy for anybody, The US/West are the only countries in the world that have human rights and equality protected by law. In Africa today there are still millions of slaves, girls endure FGM, and girls are sold into marriage in exchange for goats. Africans cant even get a free education, clean water doesnt exist and sewerage and sanitation is non-existent. Women have no rights in Africa, and they get no protection from police if they are abused or raped. Different tribes and ethnic groups are attacking and killing each other across Africa. Criticizing the government in most of the non-western world will get you arrested or killed. People can only date/marry within the tribe or religion.
A black person in the US can do any job including the president. There is a reason black/brown people are fleeing Africa to go to Europe or the US. There is a reason why the world's refugees and immigrants are fleeing non-western countries to go to western countries.
