I can't describe how much i like your Sound Traveler videos. Since i was 13 I'am unable to hear the world in its full 3d beauty due to the fact that my rigth ear does hear about 30% less than the normal one (left). Normaly i use hearing Aid but the quality of the sound isn't just as good as a normal ear but now i have headphones which can be tuned to the right balance and in combination with your amazing 3d sound footage i can finaly hear things as if my ear wasn't damaged at all so thank you for making this possible for me i can't stop listening to your videos.
Me neither, and it really is awesome. If you like hearing things, (first, turn down your volume a bit if you want that to continue, then) check out this other video of the landing as well. It's even closer than the VAB ua-cam.com/video/Z_kfM-BmVzQ/v-deo.html
Interesting, its the same weird... farting noise, for lack of a better term What is it thats creating all those tiny BRRRRRBBBB sounds. Sonicbooms? no, that doesnt fit the KABOOMs later on...
When I tell others about real binaural audio with low frequency coverage and headroom I like to use your video as a stellar example. There are other binaural recordings but no where near the depth and sound stage yours has. You really mastered this properly as far as anyone with high end cans is concerned. This video is my current sound reference for binaural audio. Now just imagine how powerful and loud the Saturn V must have sounded from the rooftop of the VAB.
I played this at a moderate volume last night with my 4 PSA 18" subs , and it felt like the house was taking off too! Will have to try more volume another day!
Where I lived in the early 80s a sonic boom could be heard every now and then. Sometimes the windows were shaking. I lived about 12 km from a military airport and it was an incredible noise when the fighters were starting with afterburners engaged. For us kids who loved airplanes it was music.
I grew up between Salina and Junction City, Kansas in the 7/80s. We didnt have internet, but we had fighter jets practicing aerial maneuvers and screaming by at Mach1+, we had B1 bombers doing touch & goes next to our peewee baseball field on the old air base, we had tankers refueling just about anything right above us. Sometimes they were popping the sound barrier so much during the week, that the teachers would take us outside to watch...we weren't getting anything else done, anyway. We learned that if we heard the fighter and he didnt turn around, he was already gone. The sound they make as they shred through the air still makes the hair stand up on my neck. They used to fly LOW... Fort Riley was a few miles away, so we got to watch A-10s and all sorts of helicopters practice too. Imagine being a 15 year old kid and seeing 6 Apaches for the first time, flying in formation.
I'm not much of a NASCAR fan, but the first lap of the Daytona 500 is really something to see and hear. Right on the level with rockets and funny cars.
Jorge Rojas same here! Destin, I don’t know what happened but the sound in the Smart Traveller video is much clearer than in the Smarter Every Day version. I could actually hear the five booms here, it not in SED.
It's been over a year since this happened and was uploaded and with the second launch of the Falcon Heavy happening within the past couple of days, this is still a treat to watch.
Giratina143 You gave me a great idea! Now I'm using my home stereo system. I have 1100 watts of power going to two 12" car audio subwoofers directly behind my chair in my living room along with an array of JBL speakers to play the mid and high range tones. I cranked it up loud and clear until the pans vibrated in the kitchen and the high pitch crackles strummed my eardrums. I thank you for posting your comment because you made me realize that I should move past just the headphones and shake the room with noise just as it would in person. Thank you
I watched this with high quality studio headphones, but ALSO played it out at equal loudness on my studio speakers. It allows you to get the 3d/binaural effect, but also FEEL the sound in your body. Its a visceral feeling.
There's a thing called the "Woojer" made for gaming, similar to rumble pak and whatever has been put into gaming controllers, they make woojers as chest straps to convey the vibrations
I was able to attend to the "Closer" section, right at the Rocket Yard and i gotta tell you when the sound reached us it was incredible! Then as i was walking towards the parking lot i was able to catch the boosters land and hear the booms! That was an amazing thing to witness! Cant wait to go again! Thank you Destin for this as my D3100 didnt have enough lens power to get a nice image but i did capture it! I will remember this for ever!
Amazing! You've officially convinced me to go to a rocket launch. Boy I love that sound. That is the sound of raw power. I hope that I will get the thrill of going to space someday.
Wow! Didn't know they let anyone up there for the launches! I was down in the crowd below the VAB and it's weird seeing my car and where I was sitting from up there. It's funny knowing people were up there when I was discussing it. Hope you guys enjoyed the view!
Amazing. That sound gave me chills. I would love to see this launch with the audio synced up with the video since the sound delay from that distance is pretty significant.
Thank you, Destin and Trevor! Trevor, I'm so happy you got the pass for the roof. You earned that, my friend, and captured the event so well. Destin, that sound was incredible. Keep up the great work!

I don't have any idea why the Falcon Heavy launch had such an emotional response from me also but I totally cried as well. Then again at the simultaneous landing and then again at the same points watching this. Those engines at launch is absolutely the most incredible thing I have ever heard.
It would be a sin to skip ahead. This was truly immersive. Such a great video. Now I could say I was there in person. And yes, I came right after the demo-2 launch.
The way you purposely position yourself that you hear conversations and certain sounds on each ear, like when you were on that bridge. Amazing videos man.
How much dynamic range compression did the recording equipment apply to the original sound? Also how much of the low frequency content of the sound was preserved?
Same thing with fighter jet recordings. You really can't feel the concussion coming off of the engine with a sound system, you actually have to be there since its a full body experience.
To preserve the true sound, you need extremely high quality recording instruments. We are talking about an entire studio dedicated for this. A photographer bringing in recording equipment can't achieve something like this. There are recordings of cannons firing that can shake your soul, but to listen to that, you need high-fidelity speakers and amplifiers. In addition a good recording and the track needs to be formatted properly and not some crappy Mp3. At such level, even what type of wires you use can affect the sound quality. Biaural is just the tip of the iceberg if you want to listen to quality sound. Once you get in to it, it's hard to listen to anything else. Not even sarcasm. If you got a good enough set up, you can hear even the most minute of details and vibrations of instruments. The sound doesn't even appear to be from the speakers, but rather behind it or in between them. That will be the closest you get to being there in person.
Goosebumps. Not gonna lie. Good audio of an event is EVERYTHING. Would be great too see a compilation of various rocket launches with this level of audio and visual clarity.
No replacement for the full-body infrasound, but this does a better job at capturing that "ripping canvas of the gods" sound than any other recording I've heard! I was at the Saturn V building, the closest the general public could get, (Bill Nye TSG was up on the VIP balcony) and the way the building's massive windows reverberated was borderline concerning! My first ever launch and it was a hell of a introduction. There's an energy to just a handful of sounds that I find really overwhelming: this, being trackside as a full grid of cars comes by at full tilt (NASCAR or V10-era F1 in particular), and being right up in a large waterfall come to mind. The sound so directly communicates the power of the thing itself.
This is a video I keep coming back to over and over. The binaural audio is incredibly immersive. I just got some better sounding headphones and it made it even better this time.
Is it just me or did you guys only have permission to be up there for like 5 minutes? It just seemed like as soon as you got up there, the Falcon was ready to go, then as soon as the recording was done, there was no hanging out at all... just pack up and leave right away. One of them started packing up before the sonic booms had even occurred.
turgsh01 they were there for hours. The launch was suppose to be around 1 ish so they had to be there 30 min before at least but the launch was at 5 so they were up there for a while.
Try these video with Google Cardboard! The good videos come out really cool and make you feel like you are really there. The not so good videos that move too fast give me motion sickness.
Destin, you should do a video explaining the physics of the sound of a rocket launch. Clearly the downward force of the engines is directing the sound towards the ground at the beginning of takeoff, but as the rocket gets progressively higher, the conical shape of the sound wave expands outwards and up, and thus causes the noticeable shift we hear in timbre and tonality.. I’m sure it’s probably not as interesting as something you’d normally do, but it’d be mad cool to see it visualized.. also include the speed of sound over the distance and somehow visualize the wave as it covers the range of distance between the rocket and the observer. Basically do this, but do a smarter every day version instead. ua-cam.com/video/MErKkBWRY9E/v-deo.html
I read somewhere the boosters do three re-entry burns just before landing due to the booster design, so that would explain the three booms. The boosters are coming in at supersonic speeds right up until shortly before landing.
I may be wrong but sonic booms are caused by the build up of air pressure at supersonic speeds so basically there is a high pressure forming at the legs making a sonic boom while travelling above the sound barrier, the grid fins have a high pressure wave forming in front and the engines have a third high pressure wave in front of them.
taiken5968 no, I mean, get some digital representation of how air pressure moves sound through the molecular makeup that is air and follow it from point of origin to the listeners ears. Explaining it with words is lame. That would be like explaining things with words and not using high speed cameras.
> ... what exactly causes the popping sound... My understanding is that the popping/cracking distortion is caused by >~191dbSPL sound pressure negative peaks, created by the engines, that exceed the ~15psi atmospheric pressure (at sea level, progressively less at altitude), so the negative side of the sound waveform becomes 0psi, a vacuum, and can therefore go no lower; the result is a negative-clipped waveform that gets worse as the rocket ascends.

Seriously though at first I thought it was just trolling and memes about it but now I know there are some ppl are seriously believing that shit -_-
Excellent man. This is so cool. Best rocket video for me from the other side of the world where I never expect to see one such event with my own eye. Thanks man.
Thank you. You have just made it an amazing experience for a blind person to enjoy. I love the 3-D audio!! Great work!! In the blind community, we have games called audio games which used binoral audio. You should check them out. A few examples are, pitch black, detectives demise and so on.
Thank you so much for that experience! I live in Ohio so I don't have the opportunity to experience anything like this. It really felt like I was there. I was listening with bone conduction type headphones and it enhanced the vibration effect. So cool!
This channel is going to leave a big hole in my soul! How am I going to watch the videos on other channels without expecting them to sound this amazing?! :'(
THIS. I have to say that the video captured the sound as perfectly as possible. The only thing that could have made it better would be the ability to vibrate your shirt against your skin. AWESOME job, Destin.
Hello from England, I've watched your videos for months now and only just found all these videos. 25/03/2020. Yes right in the middle of covid19. I hope the wold is well, these videos are amazing thank you Destin.

Dustin. I was just above Port Canaveral on a thin beach that is 8 miles from the launch but only 4 miles from the landing zones. And i have to say this video makes it all real again. It does such an amazing job at capturing the tremendous power of this rocket, thank you! Also top of VAB is cool but come to the beach for amazing landing views!

I got to this channel (and subscribed) via smarter every day. Cheers Trevor, great photography
Could you make a video with Primitive Technology...
I dont know how many times ive watched this already. Gets better every time
Guess where im going in exactly 1 week

no, SPACE CAMP!!!!!!!
im not a bot i promise, the content you create is something discovery channel couldnt ever come up with YOUR MY FAV UA-camR!
I wonder how many people will still say the earth is flat and the launch was CGI after watching this
They always have this stupic, super-illogical, mind-blowingly idiotic answer..... Fish eye lens! If the go-pro had fish-eye lens effect why was the footage of car itself not effected by fish-eye effect...DUMB ASS PEOPLE STILL BELIEVING THIS SHIT! Seriously though at first I thought it was just trolling and memes about it but now I know there are some ppl are seriously believing that shit -_-
too too many
Róbert Szabo No amount of evidence will ever convince someone as aggressively stupid as a flat earther.
Thank you for sharing this extended version!
Probably the coolest thing I’ve ever seen on UA-cam!
Thank you so much for that experience! I live in Ohio so I don't have the opportunity to experience anything like this. It really felt like I was there. I was listening with bone conduction type headphones and it enhanced the vibration effect. So cool!
I wish there were more amazing binaural recordings like this one on UA-cam. I'm struggling to find anything as good as this.
This is by far my most favorite video on UA-cam.🔊
This channel is going to leave a big hole in my soul! How am I going to watch the videos on other channels without expecting them to sound this amazing?! :'(
THIS. I have to say that the video captured the sound as perfectly as possible. The only thing that could have made it better would be the ability to vibrate your shirt against your skin. AWESOME job, Destin.
Hello from England, I've watched your videos for months now and only just found all these videos. 25/03/2020. Yes right in the middle of covid19. I hope the wold is well, these videos are amazing thank you Destin.
Imagine playing this high quality binaural audio with proper audiophile headphones, insane, might get back to it if i ever switch from my AKGs
Destin. I came here from your Smarter Every Day channel so, mission accomplished! New subscriber here! I love your content. Simply incredible productions. Keep up your amazing work!
I watched it twice, very nice!
... And the first half of the Video adds a sweet "calm before the storm feeling" to it.
Nicely done!
