One of the greatest stories that I heard about Shastri ji was from his son. When he was visiting soldiers wounded in the 1965 war. He stumbled upon a badly injured Sikh soldier who lost his legs because of mine explosion. He came forward and held his hands. Seeing tears from the soldier's eyes, Shastri ji spoke "Tears don't suite you, you are a soldier of the Indian army." The soldier, politely replied "I'm not crying because I won't survive this, but these tears are because my country's Prime minister is infront of me and I can't even stand and Salute him".
This is another interesting story about him:Shastriji served as Home Minister from 1961 to 1963. After he left the ministry and before becoming the pm, he was sitting in his home in the evening with the lights switched off. When asked the reason he replied that since he isn't a minister anymore, he has to pay his bills himself. And as a minister and mp he never saved much. He was the epitome of simple living.
Vallabhai Patel passed away in 1950. I don't think he could have done much in 3 years if he was the first PM. Nehru would have still become PM, but the 2nd PM.

Gandhi was called Father of the Nation because he is the only one who make crores of Indians participated in Independence movement in every manner. You must understand normal common men, farmers, poor men can't participate in Independence movement like Vagat singha or S.C Bose. They can't shoot British officer or Indian servants under British rule. Before Gandhi, most of poor Indians don't have much concept of Anti-British movement. He make people understand that British are not invincible not only in war but in a way where every common man can perticipate.

You forgot to tell about the Tashkent Man - Subash Chandra Bose...Lal Bahadur Shastri met Netaji at Tashkent and he was also considered one of the only people in India who could convince Netaji.
And I am sure that Netaji met him even after this incident took place after 20 yrs of the plane crash because even Emily Shenkel said about Netaji that "you can't spy on dead people... ofcourse he is alive"
And also Steven Gregory wrote in his statement that killing a man wearing a white cap and a dhoti made the world a safer place...he was either talking about Homi J Bhaba or Lal Bhadur Shastri (most probably Lal Bahadur Shastri)
