Plini is such a great teacher. He explains things in such a calm way & it all makes more sense. Plus I love how he always looks like he just rolled out of bed.
I look forward to implementing these tips very soon. Amazing that I can take such ingrained patterns and boxes and inject such new life into them with ease. Thank you!
does anybody else love the fact that plini can play basically nothing and still sound amazing, not that a pentatonic is not interesting, but plini, plini izes it and makes takes it to a whole new level... love this guy .
John vincent I don't mean to say in the sense of technical ability but in the sense of their actual way and voice of speaking... They are so relaxed and calm when they explain things. I just like the sound of his voice. Of course Guthrie is a god. (Well a god amongst gods). Heck, I wouldn't place plini anywhere near joe sattriani or Steve vai even, Guthrie is another dimension! Plini is really great. But Guthrie is the supreme
a wannabe ?? you cant be serious. also, how many guitar players do you know that compare their ability's like a sporting event ? really, different styles and different inspirations, one does not have to be "better" than another. plini is awesome, Ive seen him play and hes very chill, he even let his backup guitar player lead some of the solos he usually does and communicates a lot with his bandmates when he plays. When they play a show it doesnt look like work at all, it look s like a guy hanging out with his friends having a great time and making great music.
Repurpose to modes! Haha, just kidding. Love that Strandberg, dude. Damn, and a big picture of Jimmy, you can't go wrong. That dude can write. I'm sure you've heard Ten Years Gone and such, just from another realm.
Tldr: it’s easier to conceptualise when you’re playing when you’re used to e standard tuning if you don’t think about everything being flatted It’s just one of those things a lot of guitarists do, I do it as well if I’m playing in lowered tunings. I can’t speak for everyone but I myself find it easier to conceptualise everything in e standard even if the strings are tuned lower because I did the bulk of my learning in e standard and the relative intervals between the strings are all the same, I always end up tripping over myself mentally if I think about every note being flatted. If I just think about everything in e standard then I still think about and play everything as I normally would, it just comes out of the guitar sounding lower but I don’t have to think about it any differently. This kind of thinking doesn’t apply to alternate tunings like drop d where the intervals between the strings are different but it helps for standard tunings other than e
@@AchingGibbon450 Thanks for the explanation, that makes sense. I guess I would have assumed those schooled in music theory would refer to the proper key, but I almost always see it in the key of E (including Guitar Word tabs). I am not far schooled in music theory but I do tend to reference the actual note/root/chord when I do discuss with other people.
sorry this might sound really daft, but how is he playing the F major chord on the third fret? if the root is on the E or the A string then doesnt he have to play it from the 1st of the 9th fret respectively? maybe this would be easier if i wasnt high right now
David Sim I'm answering the original question which was how he was playing an f chord on the third fret. The questioner assumed it was standard tuning thus "if the root is on the E or the A string then doesn't he have to play it from the 1st or the 9th fret respectively?" You are correct in the notes that make up an fmaj7 chord, but that however doesn't inform the original question how he is able to for a few shape on the third fret. :)
in this video, yes... he is droning the d ( usually in standard an E ) and playing the pentatonic below it using standard tuning. You see this when he talks about " D " and then drones the low string as im sure you are referencing. I will note that i only watched it once so my observation assumes some things ( did not look at the fret notes below the dropped E string ) your observation that the lowest string is tuned to open D is correct. :)
Plini is awesome, but Textures off of cynic - focus was the song that started my journey down instrumental music... also the first guy i ever saw playing a headless guitar. :)
jonnyQuest that's the way it's meant to be. If it had a headstock, it would neck dive like crazy due to how small the body is. I do think it would look cool with the Music Man headstock though.
That makes sense, it would be top heavy and unbalanced with a headstock on it. I love the body shape. Kind of reminds me of Reb Beach's guitar: goo.gl/images/gLXboS
Pentatonic scale doesnt sound intriguing in progressive stuff... but somehow David Gilmour or even Alex Lifeson for that matter make pentatonic scale work wonders in prog music. At least to my ears. I dnt knw.
I like Plini. I own some of his albums and watched this video, and others. But his mindset is wrong. He thinks his progressive influences outshine the influences that he started out with. Penatatonics. The pasta scale.
Is that a Chorus effect with delay? Beautiful
The guy’s chill is as epic as his playing. Would have loved having him as a teacher when I was starting out.
Just woke up on the side of the street, feelin not in the mood but have an online class to teach. That's Plini.
I like how ace Frehley does the pentatonics.
Badly?
Anthonym shots fired 😂
2:36 ok pls make a shoegaze album
It was entertaining to hear him call that off-pair of notes "disgusting." Even he looked like he was getting away with something when he said it.
when plini talks about noodling around a riff
I love that pentacostic scale
Nice piece o wood
Some of my favorite moments in life are when I accidentally end up in disgusting but really cool musical situations.
Plini has this air like he's amused people are talking to him sometimes.
I find aussies/kiwis to be great teachers. Very straight forward.

god bless him
So helpful. So, so, totally helpful.

Is he talking about different pentatonic patterns and not only the first pattern?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's Lydian. Or maybe Mixo-lydian?
At first I thought this was John Mayer video but then I realize the guitar 😂
I really liked this lesson, thanks for the mag column and video! One question: why are all references to regular notes when he's really flatted?
I strongly suggest you to think intervals instead of notes!
Tldr: it’s easier to conceptualise when you’re playing when you’re used to e standard tuning if you don’t think about everything being flatted

I think so too specially when he referred to that chord being F maj7 when actually the position looked like a G major in standard tuning
what is a guitar?
Is he tuned a half step down
yes
I wanna know what's on his effects loop for the second part of the video
That chorus sound is the tits
i like to pretend i know what he is saying
there's nothing groundbreaking about anything he said

What is the guitar tuning?
Drop D .
