Transformers 2007: It's All Downhill From Here

  • There once was a series about robots that turned into stuff. The series itself would perform the biggest transformation of all. Into a horrific abomination spanning five movies.
But before that happened, there was a single movie. A single dream. A single spark of actual integrity. The one and only decent Micheal Bay Transformer movie. Transformers 2007. I'm not going to simply make fun of this movie. I want to understand it. How did it come to this.

Something I both love about the first film, and the cartoon that ran alongside it, Transformers Animated, is that the Decepticons felt like _threats._ They weren't punching bags, when one showed up it was a big deal, and the fight in Mission City encapsulates the feeling of actual teamwork and strategy (the part where Brawl is getting hammered by Jazz, Ironhide and Ratchet comes to mind). If it was a one on one fight, unless if the two characters were extremely comparable in weight class, one would be getting decimated by the other, as seen in Prime vs Megatron's fight. I much prefered that approach where they were on the backfoot over the extreme hand to hand fighting always going in the Autobots favor as seen in the later films and other Transformers series also, even if quite a few of these fight sequences were cool.

We also gotta think about time periods.
I don't think a mainstream (as in, people who aren't blatant Transformers fans) audience would be too invested in the G1-esque designs at that time period.
That was still in the 2000s, and back then everything had to be cool. And I know people by the dozens who would have been ignorant enough to just not watch Transformers due to those designs. You really had to pull the wool over people's eyes to get them to do things.
Bumblebee made it work thanks to better technology andnactually combining G1 designs with Bay designs to make a new, but still familiar aesthetic.
On another note, Bumblebee itself mainly really works because Bay's Transformers "didn't work." This is a bit of a side rant, but while I understand people not liking Bayformers, I can't lie to people and say that those movies didn't do their job.
The Bayverse did its job. And honestly, for a Transformers movie, I really don't expect much beyond cool fights and explosions and scenes like the forest battle of RotF and many scenes in Dark of the Moon deliver that kind of action.
Though I am looking forwards to the new Transformers movies going on, with the loss of Michael Bay as director, a lot of the action probably isn't going to hit as hard.
And while one can say, "We'll get better stories," if I'm being honest, this is Transformers, and despite having good stories in various TV shows and comics, I doubt a moving story is gonna happen when selling toys is the main motive. Bumblebee's story was okay, but it's in a situation where it's similar to movies like a Monster Truck or E.T. in regards to premise with not as much action for a payoff.
It's not bad, but it's not great either. I do appreciate the designs, however.

It’s the only one I, ever few years, think about rewatching. It might be a basic story and all, but the effects and characters really stick the landing. It was also my first impression of Transformers, as I knew they existed, but never watched it when I was a kid. Besides the pictures and short clips on UA-cam, these iterations are the ones I had. I will forever defend the 2007 film. It's got stupid jokes, and debatable designs, but in terms of introducing the Transformers, the storyline is perfect.
Like you said, the movie emphasizes how they're "robots in disguise". The movie doesn't start on Cybertron. It starts on earth, in the perspective of the humans. A familiar perspective. As for the Transformers themselves, we hardly even see them as characters until halfway through. And that's good. It makes them mysterious for the first half. They're hiding everywhere.
As for the rest of the movie, I believe the only character that doesn't get named is Frenzy (and Brawl, kinda... but that's a complicated discussion). This all is the perfect setup for a series of movies following the Autobots themselves, with Sam maybe being in a subplot.
...unfortunately, that didn't happen. The human to Transformer ratio remained the same for the rest of the films for no reason regarding the actual story. The Transformers aren't kaiju. They're characters too, that can hold their own story. The "disaster movie" aspect of Bay's Transformers that you mentioned really dampened the rest of the series.
    Good video.

They’re just mimicking human features. As someone whose first introduction to Transformers was this movie, and who moved on to watch multiple of the animated shows and even read a few of the comics, I have to say that while a lot of this film is hard to watch nowadays (legit, I tried watching it drunk on my birthday and I barely got past the 1-hour mark before quitting), I’ve always enjoyed the action scenes and the attempt at setting the admittedly childish premise in a more realistic setting. The designs aren’t the prettiest, but I’ve always loved that they actually looked like their bodies could transform into actual vehicles, and even now, watching clips of the action/chase scenes, I’m impressed by their quality. I’d legitimately take this film over whatever new movie the MCU pumps out.

To me Bayformers franchise is a good example of “This is what happens if the studio gives a director too much freedom of what he/she wants to do”. I think first one was fine because Paramount was like, “Hey, we’re gonna give you this amount of budget so that you can make a movie you want to make, but you have to make it under some of our rules and restrictions. Okay?” Then when the first film did well, Paramount was like, “You know, you made a lot of money at the box office. And because of that, we’re gonna let you do whatever you want! We’ll give you locations, sets and all the budgets you need! Now go crazy and make us some money!”

It helps that Steven Spielberg was involved in the production of the first one, and the whole "boy and his alien friend" comes from him than Michael Bay. Once he left it was all on Bay and you can see just how insane they turn without a storytelling person in the writing room. I have a bit of nostalgia for the 1st one since it was my last free summer before I got a job and Linkin Park in the soundtrack was cool, even if the albums were also hated by old TF fans who wouldn't shut the fuck up about wanting Stan Bush back along with other old 80's Dinosaur bands.
I was really defensive when it came to these movies Vs. Angry TF fans and Critics. But looking back I think it was mostly cause there wasn't a more spectacular scifi series until the MCU came into existence and showed the world that a action summer blockbuster could be more than just explosions, jock humor and the camera going up a Super model's ass.

Tons of movies aimed at children have had amazing writing and plots for anyone (megamind; kung fu panda (like any of them); shrek; the incredibles (still better than the more “adult” fantastic four movies). Saying something is for kids or adults has no basis on whether its actually “well written”. The movies are like that sure, but they are pale imitations of the absolute insanity that is the shows. G1 has unironically amazing writing. The characters are iconic, truly. Like Starscream is so untrustworthy that he made a deal with Satan and *betrayed Satan*. All the the "serious and cool" themes you could find in Bayformers were done in G1 years before and done better, way better.
What makes G1 so perfect though is that aside from the actually amazing writing, it is still a complete mess of absurdity and silliness. Shit happens completely inexplicably, while also somehow making perfect sense. When you watch the show you stop going "why the fuck are they somehow talking to King Arthur" and instead start going "oh, shit. Another time travel episode? Cool". The character arcs are these insane but absolutely legendary materpieces. Megatron is such a defined and well represented character that you never doubt him. He can live up to any of his promises, he truly feels like the character we're told he is. When he becomes Galavatron, he somehow becomes a completely different character while remaining the same. He doubles his power at the cost of losing his mind. He's no longer a careful plotter, but now someone so deadly they can afford to simply fight at their whim. Same character, same motive, but a completely different personality.
That dichotomy of actually well written story and absurdity makes the show glorious. For me, it's the concept of Transformers represented perfectly.

I saw this movie in theaters when I was 4 years old. It was not a perfect movie, nor was it aspiring to be such a thing, but the image of Blackout transforming to lay waste to a military base as effortlessly as taking baby steps is something I will never forget. I like the Bay films because Michael Bay cares a lot more about making "brain turn off" bargain bin movies than anything deep or attempting to push a message. Sure, there are some films that leave a lot to be desired, and even I felt the last few movies were missing what made the first tick, but at least I could enjoy the spectacle. In fact, It was that first experience in the theater that has shaped my imagination ever since. That and every Battlefield trailer since BF1.

I wish that they'd made more decepticons with non militaristic alt-modes. In IDW's All Hail Megatron comics they were a bit creative with it. For example, Astrotrain uses his alt-mode to go into the subway tunnels and kill the people hiding out in the stations. At first when he's approaching, the people think its a subway that's coming to rescue them but nope.
Tbh those comics felt more like a disaster movie type story than Transformers 2007. Humanity's situation felt genuinely hopeless and it was kinda dark. I thought they were pretty good and I'd recommend them.

decepticons having militaristic alt-modes makes sense though. Of course they'd pick the vehicles with heavy weaponry where the autobots are content with disguising as normal cars. That being said they probably would've done more non military modes if they didn't use such a small cast

Just found your channel today and am loving your transformers videos... The first movie is also what got me into the series, and now that I'm entering my twilight years (30s), I'm a complete super fan. I really appreciate the positivity you're giving to this first movie, appreciating the obvious love and passion that went into it. It's very easy for people to write off the Bay movies as bad with the same tired criticism over and over, so I love that you didn't do that. The opening scene with Blackout was the first time I'd really seen a Transformer, outside of my older sister liking Beast Wars as a kid (it wasn't my thing).
I'm known among my friends as a Bayverse Defender, and I do honestly think there's at least a couple redeeming things about all of the movies. (Even The Last Knight - I felt that Hot Rod's design was a return to the vibe of the first and second movies' robot designs, rather than the metal human horror shows we got with 4 and 5. Holy yikes.) Also, the scores for the movies are consistently great. Steve Jablonsky is a treasure.
Though none of the movies are remotely my favorite TF media, I will always give at least the first one the respect it deserves. Looking forward to seeing the other 2 TF videos of yours I haven't watched yet! :)

I would say I'm mixed towards the franchise
I loved the first one, and still do (I was 7 at the time, and it got me into Transformers. Which I, ultimately, think was it's greatest achievement)
Thought the 2nd one was okay, liked the 3rd.
I thought Age of Extinction started *really* strong, but got shitty after the first act. And The Last Knight was awful.
    Bumblebee was great!

Wow that's quite literally my exact situation. I was 7 when the first one came out, big fan of the original trilogy. I agree that the first act of the 4th one was awesome, but after optimus gets his new truck mode it all started going downhill. The 5th one left me feeling empty on the inside

I can not imagine bothering to see 5 after 4. I did a marathon when I was sick this year, starting with Bumblebee, then rewatching the Sam trilogy and while Bumblebee was definitely a solid film, and I found some new appreciation for Dark of the Moon, I wish I stopped there. Age of Extinction was such a dull, dragged out clusterfuck that I actually wish I had never seen or at least stopped halfway in. I think that's the only movie I felt this way about and I'm pretty sure it wasn't because of covid. It's amazing that the next one could be somehow worse.

Personally my first introduction to Transformers was the Armada, Energon, and Cybertron cartoons, which all took themselves a fair bit more seriously than the 80s Transformers, so when I saw the movie it just felt dumb live-action version of the 2000s cartoons.
Also I'm surprised to hear that Optimus's original live-action design was so disliked. Personally I thought it was awesome.

As Transformers (2007) was also my first exposure to the IP, I thought it was awesome! It was a hallmark on high school band trips when we were stuck on a charter bus for hours at a time. The transformations and sound effects were great. Nowadays, it's easier to point out its flaws, yet I can't help but still have a soft spot for it.

As someone who has recently watched these movies out of curiosity, I was almost shocked by how well some of their aspects hold up. Sure, they're narratively empty, they have nothing interesting to say about politics or human relationships, they're pandering, they're long, they're noisy, they get worse with each installment, I don't plan on watching them again... But the special effects of the first trilogy are incredible and put a lot of modern blockbusters to shame, they have some good ideas and pay good attention to small details - at least for the first one. Oddly enough, my favorite scenes are the ones where humans are trying to fight and/or avoid Decepticons, and you can just feel how huge and threatening they are to normal people. They're not great movies, but they're solid "guilty pleasure" material.

14:58 I had an idea where the Decepticons had color shifting technology to simultaneously change colors so they can disguise themselves better as legit looking military vehicles and then ditching the bland colors to their more iconic ones when they no longer need it because they're invading the world now or some shit that way we can get best of both worlds while the Autobots had no problem changing colors because they use civilian vehicles and as long as it's not as outlandinsh they can blend pretty easily.

    • @teddyriggs1305

And it's really not that far fetched many Transformers in the past has some crazy abilities like turn invisible, mass shifting which allows certain Transformers to transform in extremely impossible sizes and transform into a different looking transformer so changing colors is really not that hard for them to do

I find Transformers 07 to be a guilty pleasure of sorts, where I love the ideas but the execution is, um, middling at best. I liked how they tried to build up the Transformers even in some of the earliest trailers (I even read the Ghosts of Yesterday novel beforehand and it was a legit good read). I liked how genuinely dangerous and intelligent they tried to make the Decepticons. I liked some of the different angles they went with to differentiate itself from prior versions (Beast Wars and the Japanese anime shows of the 2000s were my bread and butter). But wonky writing, questionable design choices that clashed with the ones that made sense, the inconsistent lore that made less and less sense, it just fell apart at the seams. Oh lord I wish Bayformers had balanced itself better.
PS. Unpopular opinion, I actually liked the red hot rod flames on Optimus Prime.

@@boobah5643 Heck I first grew up with Optimus being a fire engine in the Robots in Disguise anime and again in the Cybertron anime later on, and in between both of those he alternated to a beefy sci-fi semi-truck in Armada and Energon. So I’m perfectly fine with Optimus being whatever variation of the two so long as he still looks right. Same goes for Megatron who has been in way more alternate forms (my personal preference being a tank). Problem is both of their actual character models (and their writing) has been dreadful.

I think the 7/10 the movie has on IMDB is very much earned. Its a good movie, but not a great one, and its not a horrible one either. I will gladly agree with everyone when they say that everything from RoTF to TLK was lackluster at the absolute best, but I will forever defend the 2007 Transformers movie to my grave. Its so 2007 it almost hurts. Whenever I need that dose of Nostalgia with action entertainment, I know Transformers (2007) will be there for me to enjoy it. I still get chills in certain parts of the movie to this day, 15 years after I first saw it lmao. Its definitely a solid 7/10 and I do recommend it to anyone who wants a non-superhero action flick with odd sexual tension mixed in for literally no reason.
