Now I know why my Montauk Daisy falls over. I didn’t know to prune it back in Spring. Montauk is my most favorite place and having Montauk Daisy’s reminds of that fabulous place on the ocean! ❤
I'm so glad you'll be pruning your Montauk Daisies each Spring now on. Be sure to use those cuttings to propagate and root more plants! I like to cut my daisies back a few times during the growing season. 😊💞 I've never been to Montauk, New York, but it does look like a beautiful place to visit! 🌊
I had just watched this video when a fellow gardener friend brought several of us starts of a Montauk daisy. I had never heard of them before your video, so, perfect timing!
I think you've solved a mystery for me. I've noticed the autumn daisies but had no idea what they were called. I'm eager to get some now. Another 'late bloomer' that I've enjoyed is the Jerusalem artichoke. They have lovely yellow daisy-like flowers. They can get quite tall, but if you give them the old Chelsea chop you can prevent them from flopping. Now these guys are prone to spreading through rhizomes, but they are very easy to control by pulling up the extraneous plants. They look a lot like tall garden phlox before they bloom, but they can be easily identified by their fuzzy stems.
I'm so glad you'll now be able to look for the Montauk / Nippon daisy later this summer. Usually the big box stores sell it. Be on the lookout for it! That's great to know about the Jerusalem artichoke. I'll have to be on lookout for that one. I'm always trying to get more fall interest in my garden. I also recommend Joe Pye Weed as well as the Great Blue Lobelia for late summer interest in the garden. 🥰🪻
Thank you for this video. I never knew I needed to cut daisies back. By cutting them back does that cause them to branch out more like moms making them more sturdy and round? Also, I too love Daisy and have different varieties in my perennial bed. Can I do the same thing with them?
You're welcome! Yes, cutting them back makes them bushier / more round and branch out more. It also helps keep the plant more compact and less likely to fall over from being too leggy. Shasta Daisies can also handle what's called the Chelse Chop, which is pruning or cutting them back by about 1/3. You typically want to do that by early to mid-June, so now is a great time. Even though the Chelse Chop delays blooming by 2-3 weeks, it's worth it because you'll have a fuller and more robust plant. 🌼💗
@@budgetgardeningvita Thank you. Can I cut the daisy’s and root them in water and then put them in the ground to grow or can I just cut and strip the lower leaves and plant them directly into the soil making sure the leaf nodes are buried? On a different note, I have a gorgeous purple Penstamum (unsure of the spelling) and it is about 2’ tall with a flower stalk that is blooming pink flowers that brings it up to about 3’ tall. It was one of the very first plants to come out of dormancy along with the daffodils and sedums. Can I cut these back in the spring once they get up to about a foot so as to cause branching on this too?
I’m interested in now, (November). the flowers have stopped blooming and we’re getting frost in the morning. Should I cut my daisy’s back or leave them until Spring?
Hi there. Sorry for the delay in responding to your question. You want to wait until Spring to cut back your Montauk Daisies. At that time, you can also take cuttings and root those for more plants if you'd like. 😊🌼
Usually you want to prune your Montauk Daisy by the first week of July. To be honest, I didn't get to pruning all of mine back so I will be pruning some of the stems just not all of the stems. It'll be a good experiment. You may want to try it too, especially if you have more than one. 😊🌸

Great timing indeed! You'll love having this daisy in your yard come late in the gardening season. 🌼☺️
Great video! I just planted these and go Bruins!!
You're very welcome! Yes - Go Bs!! 🏒😊
Thank you! This is my first full year with these kinds of daisies. I will cut now and propagate the cuttings! You are awesome!
I'm so glad you have some. I want more people to have it in their garden as I think it's lovely later in the season! 😊🌺
I have Gauras, too, and I chopped it twice, and it still is getting huge again!!
Oh wow! I should buy some Guara. It's hardy to zone 5 so it should be a perennial in my zone. I'll have to be on the lookout for some. 😊🌸
