- It's Day Three of #SixStations as I go and visit the six newest stations in the country that I've not been to yet. In each video I've got a different guest with me each time, and today my 'Northern Correspondent' Karl joins me for a station in Warrington, that he thinks should be called something else ...
The six new stations in this series are:
Worcestershire Parkway. Bow Street, Warrington West, Horden, Robroyston and Kintore.
Original music by Seb Lee-Delisle : / sebstar55
I loved seeing Geoff in Karl‘s hat, coat and Glasses as he reminded me of Paul Heaton from The Beautiful South/Housemartins.
Karl has to be the best northern correspondent out there. One of the best guests you bring on Geoff
He is wearing a jacket tho. I expect more from our northern cousins!
@@geofftech2hi that was funny
My best mate just passed away f this morning and this video made me feel better. I can always count on Geoff to make feel that little bit better.
So sorry to hear that may he rest in peace and heaven
The control tower at Burtonwood was a tall, thin tower with the control room at the top, and Fred Dibnah was engaged to demolish it using the same method he used to demolish chimneys (i.e. weakening the structure at the base, propping it up with bits of wood, and setting fire to them). A number of dignitaries including local politicians and former commanders from the base came in all their finest clothes and best uniforms to watch the tower fall. What nobody knew was that whilst the tower had been derelict, a flock of birds had started nesting in it. The smoke, and the initial movement of the tower, caused the birds to take off over the dignitaries, and do what birds often do just after taking off....
🤣
Fabulous . They should never have got rid of Burtonwood. The old rusting signal is still there. 🔥
I really am enjoying this mini-series, visiting these new stations. All of them seem really nice and modern! Really excited for episodes 4, 5 and 6
Geoff looks 20 years older wearing the flat cap.
New station looks nice, but there’s no replacing that gorgeous old station design at Sankey.
Yay ..the Northern correspondant returns...Great to see Karl back with Geoff again :)
Always a pleasure to see the Northern Correspondent on the channel!
I grew up in Great Sankey and I often used to get the train to Liverpool and Manchester from Sankey Station. Back then there was a lot more parking in the lane and the old railway yard, but this is now packed with houses. It's a shame to see the station looking so derelict, it was quite smart in the '80s and had a manned ticket office and cosy waiting room.
I used to live in the flats down there. Really handy having the train a few minutes away
Sankey for Hanky Panketh?
The problem with braille signage is that the people that need it don't know its there as they can't see it.
Easy just put another sign nearby with directions to the first one
Interesting fact: The Australian National Museum has a lot of braille including on the ceiling.
They tend to be put in standardized locations and tactile paving allow stick users to locate them. Also not everyone is totally blind, many people can tell there's a sign there due to it's size/contrast but can't read the text .
This was a really fun one to watch with Karl the Northern Correspondent and enjoying the series so far
Such fun to see the new episode of ‘Six Stations’ early for once 😂
(P.S. That Intro Sequence is everything)
Love the costume change gag, thought you’d over dubbed Karl for a moment. Made me chuckle. Cheers
Reminds me of the ending of Laurel & Hardy's "Thicker than Water"
Excellent stuff Geoff. I’ve lived in Great Sankey for 13 years, and it was great to see you at the station that is so close to our home. Sometimes the wife forgets about the new station and goes to Sankey for Penketh by mistake. It boggled my mind when they built it, I’d grown up around railways in north Liverpool/Sefton and never known of a ‘new station’. Just thought I’d add it is/we are actually west of Warrington town centre.
@@geofftech2 Assuming the surrounding areas have similar populations, I'm surprised they didn't schedule an alternating pattern of which station gets stopped at.
An optimistic interpretation of day but we're happy to have it anyway
Two trains a day stop at both stations, the 7:42 out of Warrington Central arriving into Liverpool at 8:26 and the 16:56 out of Liverpool getting back to Warrington Central at 17:34.
Edit: Update for 22-23 timetable
It's an absolute joke always was even whe it was first talk about what a waste of money over 20 million
I love Karl in his flat cap.
"Misnomer" - fabulous word, worth the extra point.
Impressive bench.
Thanks Geoff for the mini-series, great to see all these new stations and how they are accessible for all.
Makes me happy to see the 150/1s still in service. A lot of happy memories riding them between Worcester and Birmingham as a kid.
Ahh loved this! So much going on. Karl is an excellent partner and a superb Northern Correspondent. Loved the role-swapping too. 👍🏻
Ex NWR trackman here from the Warrington depot , Warrington west is an absolute nightmare for flooding . Hopefully they’ve sorted the drainage issues out now , great vid again Geoff and nice to see you both on my old patch .
Those grey railings look hideous too. Hardly the great British railway stations of the past
@@jakehowie442 couldn’t agree more
That was so much fun! Obviously for you on the day and during the edit, and for us watching now! Thanks, Geoff!
Also, Molly has a really nice voice - I could have listened to her much longer 🙂
Hurrah! This is my (original) neck of the woods... I'm from a village a few miles the other side of Warrington but been in Coventry since 1980. Anyway I visited Warrington West not long after it opened and decided to walk from the bus station (Warrington Interchange) and then get the train back to Central. Started off nice, then the dark clouds assembled... then a tremendous downpour which lasted for a good fifteen minutes and it was *cold*! However it didn't dampen my experience of the station and I found a nearby pub for a coffee, so was soon revived. Therefore full marks for the station and nice to see some new rail development in the North West. I didn't realise that Sankey for Penketh was still open for a limited service so thanks for that and a cool video always, Geoff!
well Coventry technically has a new station albeit plonked on the same site, it's like 2 eras working with each other,
@@isaactimmins8959 Yes... and it's pretty good! It includes an underpass directly under the Warwick Road (to which it is adjacent) leading to new bus stands for services into the city centre. Car parking is above with ample spaces. What's interesting (and previously unexpected) is that the old station building, which is listed, remains in operation so we have two distinct entrances/exits, spreading the load depending on your route to or from the station.
@@marcelwiszowaty1751 also has a changing places toilet much needed after IKEA closed, I kinda want a explore of cov at some point to give the city a propper look around.
@@isaactimmins8959 Well, if you do, give me a heads up and I could show you round.
I also enjoyed the use of Misnomer 👍 Give Karl a raise, or at the very least make his title "Northern Correspondent and Lexicographical Legend"
If you call a gnome an elf by mistake,is it a misgnomer?
It's not just Warrington. Apparently in the US there's a part of Virginia that's further west than West Virginia.
6:05 WHAT IS THIS LEVEL OF COSPLAY?! I AM DYING OF LAUGHTER 😂
I've subbed to Karl's 'Northern Correspondent' channel just for the lunacy of it. Well played, gents.👏
Loving this mini series of 6 new stations!
Excellent Geoff. Thanks again for the wonderful series on the new stations
I love all your guests (on all your series), but I have to admit Karl is still my favorite. Keep up the great work!
It must be said that Geoff has perfected the slow pan shot.
Karl's pivot on the other hand was a bit _to_ slow 🙂
Great series so far! Great that the bike area is covered.
i really enjoyed this one i love the announcments on the Pendelinos also im loving Warrington West
Great video. And a few good laughs. Well done.
Wow. How bizarre. I was there today.
Went to Centre Parcs in Whinfell Forest for my Daughter's 21st and with her bringing a friend, it meant I had to lug it from Liverpool and back on the train.
Penrith, Preston, Warrington Quay, Warrington Central, Liverpool Lime Street. Bootle New Strand.
I didn't read the travel itinerary properly and only realised before arriving that instead of changing platforms at Warrington Quay, that it was a 15min walk to Warrington Central. And due to a small delay, I had to do it in 7 minutes.
I've never been there before and today, of all days, you're there.
Cooooooooool.
Oh. And I made it. Top bananas.
There must be quite a few neighbouring stations where it's impossible to catch a train from one station to the next.
Of all the things I thought I might see on this channel, I didn't have Geoff cross-dressing as a Northerner on my bingo card.
Great 2 watch this grew up in Sankey thanks 4 this video 👍
Love this! You two are good together.🙃
Another great video with a great guest
Great video Geoff. Also nice to have a chat with Karl and Molly 👍
Very enjoyable and pleased to see the northern correspondent does indeed have a UA-cam channel 😀
This must be the only station I've been to before Geoff Marshall got there!
Didn't know you were a Geoff fan Nick!
Good to see you visiting my (adopted) home town mate! Great video!
Wow, I did not know there was a Warrington West station! Great video.
Haha, that was fantastic! 🤣😂😅 Good on Karl to for being such a good sport and really miking it great fun 🤓 Can’t help but feel a little sad about Sankey suddenly being relegated to almost an afterthought as it looks like it was once quire a pretty station 🤔 But on the other hand, all those new facilities are excellent and can only serve the railway (and indeed the community!) well 😎
Love the little cameo by the local too. I wonder if she’ll subscribe now Geoff? 😉
Brilliant stuff from both of you, even when swapping identities, and the John Craven’s Newsround theme was perfect 🤣😂😅
Cheers, 👍🍀🍻
Great series
Geoff your optimism about northern rail is delightful. Misplaced but delightful
The only time that Karl has beat someone to a station!
These are great fun, as ever.
I'm sure you'll have done all your research but when you get to kintore, make sure to look out for the bench and platform signs from the original station. They were salvaged in the 60s, donated back then repainted. Also...if you head into the village you can find the old station hotel (now flats...opposite the co-op). There's also a wee residential road near the old hotel where you can just about see the original station platform.
Ahh, nearly 40 years ago (gulp), I set off from Warrington Bank Quay for a month's interrailing holiday. I made it overland all the way to Morocco (Morocco is slightly more exotic than Warrington).
Warrington West is my now-local station, and it’s building has been very controversial. Sankey for Penketh was always a popular stop, with step free access. The only thing that limited it was it’s listed buildings, although no reasons were given for why Sankey Station couldn’t have simply been refurbished. Most importantly, the new Warrington West Station is a big blow for those of older age and/or those without a car who rely on trains more, as most of these people live in Sankey and Penketh.
Warrington West is a decent name for the station, as we have always called this area Warrington West anyway. I doubt it was called Chapelford Station due to Chapelford being associated with very high crime rates, snobbery, and people in Chapelford all having cars and not needing to use the station much.
Warrington West Station is by no means a bad station, and the odd extra services are appreciated, but with Sankey for Penketh still open, it seems ridiculous why that station couldn’t just be refurbished, which would be a cheaper solution and benefit a greater number of people.
Sankey for Penketh Station faces the same fate as Padgate Station - Similar vintage with limited services
It would have saved over 20 million
@@geofftech2 thanks Geoff! Was great to see you making videos up our way! :)
Karl does a great impression of you 😂
Great video as always dude
When you visited Sankey for Penketh I couldn't help but remember the late Kenny Johnson - presenter of Sounds Country on BBC Radio Merseyside - refer to Penketh as "Penkeeeeeth!" Small things...
LOL nice mouthful Karl! :-)
Ahhh - Warrington rail stations - the bane of my life for 7 years, with trains frequently and regularly late, cancelled, overcrowded etc. Since I moved away, I'm certain that friends on the pubs of Warrington, and work colleagues in Manchester don't miss my constant complaining about them. Oddly, you mention Wigan, which I had to travel via from Manchester to Warrington because the direct trains simply did not turn up.
Avanti's announcement chime sounds really good!
Great video Geoff! I live on the estate where the train station is haha
I love this series alot
I can remember when Warrington West station was the reservoir for the former RAF Burtonwood. Shame I missed the opportunity to fangirl (or fan lady of a certain age in my case!) Geoff while he was up in my neck of the woods! 🙂
So funny! And that Sankey for Penketh station looks as it will be closed soon, so worn out.
Great to see Karl again!
Good Morning Geoff glad we are the halfway mark now.
Fantastic video
A very well appointed station!
Oh yes I have been waiting for this
Was looking at my Rail Atlas to see where it is, very useful to mention Burtonwood as there is marked an out of use Ground Frame there, presumably a past connection to the military base.
When Karl said "What does Geoff do" I immediately thought walks to other stations, and then you backed this up by setting off for Sankey!
4:08 I definitely thought I heard Geoff say: "But down the road there's a station called Hanky Panky"...... lol
That's an interesting chat-up line! :)
Isn't that station located where the train goes into the tunnel?
This series is really good
Getting off a train at Warrington Bank Quay passengers were always greeted by the smell of detergent from the adjacent soap factory. This factory closed in October 2020 and with it went the distinctive and historic pong!!! However, just up the line Wigan North Western still has a smell of mint balls about it!!!
Hey geoff that's my station welcome!, Don't use it often but when i have its been great.
yay one of my locals, a little more civilised than the last 2 I mean Chappelford has a Sainsburys, Nice to see Carl I think the Northern Correspondent channel would work well you could probably Get Geoff & Jen to help you launch it,
Good video 👌
Karl is marvellous. It's impossible to not like Karl.
In the wind noise I heard 'Sankey for Penketh' as Sanky Panky. Sankey (for Penketh) does seem to have a very nice Harrington Hump.
Interesting thought about this stations location.
In the 1980s, fresh out of uni I spent a few weeks at a CND anti nuclear protest camp at Burtonwood. I'm almost certain this station is at least in part built on the site of that protest camp.
On the subject of the flooding mentioned above, I did wonder when I watched the video as my memory has the railway in a deepish cutting there, with the base on one side of the cutting and the site where the peace camp was on the other (with the USAF housing across the road) and I also have a vague memory of a small stream in the area (probably not quite right about the stream).
Geoff in flat cap as Northern correspondant is superb
Sankey for Penketh... What an extraordinary name
so much fun I watched it twice
Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺
Just watched the first two, was disappointed upon seeing that the third episode wasn't up yet, only to head back to the channel page and voilá!
There’s a whole ton of warring going on!
6:03 : Lost a mouth of tea at that......could've put a warning in or summat!! HaHaHa!
Love this video; your rail reports are always brilliant. Do you or any of your viewers have any information on when we can expect Reading Green Park Station to open? I'd love to know a date so I can plan to be there. Many thanks for any enlightenment on this.
@@geofftech2 Thanks. I'll keep checking online but would definitely be interested if you hear anything more concrete.
My sister could of seen you, at her place you can see the platforms of bank quay. I hoped you enjoyed Warrington and all its glory 😂
Great Package (!!)
six stations, more like sick stations, bro
Why is it that waiting rooms are not built at modern stations as waiting in the cold and wet is no fun if arriving very early to allow for possible traffic delays on the way to the station. I miss the blazing coal fire that my local station used to have in the waiting room in winter, even the gas fire in the down platform waiting room, often full of PO workers waiting for the mail bags. Later both changed to electric storage heaters. Could do with some sound deadening ceiling panels to cure that echo in the ticket hall.
Sankey for Perketh is the strangest name I've heard in a while
The voice impressions lol 😂
Sankey is charming.. just like my favourite station Irlam. Guys, next time you are in the area, have breakfast there, it is full of rail memorabilia
about 2 months ago I went to a cocktail class, had a three course meal afterwards, that meal was left on platform 2
Very good 🙂🚂🚂🚂
Ah yes, the Liverpool to Manchester cattletruck is still going strong....
Thing is absolutely packed when it reaches Lime Street (seriously Northern, explain why it's still only a 2 car service most of the time).
because TPE are still route learning,
Or as we call it, the Woolyback express.
@@davidemmott6225 thought thar was the other line via Newton le willows.
@@isaactimmins8959 Wools are everywhere.
I’ve done ✅ this station, but ticking off Sankey for Penketh was much more difficult now it has become a least used (served) station! However, Sankey for Penketh is still open. When the White Rose station opens on the Huddersfield line later in 2022, Cottingley will be closed.
00:01 The good old moonpig jingle!
Sankey for Penketh now only receives 4 trains a day, 2 each way, 1 each way in each peak between Warrington Central and Liverpool
Loving these new vids how about Gobowen for Oswestry and Cambrian Railway Society in Oswestry
