I still don’t understand the negative and false perceptions so many have about the flexbone. “It’s old school” “You can’t pass out of it well” “It can’t succeed in 3nd and long”. “It’s just boring 3 yards and a pile of dust.”
I don’t see many good reasons to run pistol in a flexbone offense full time. I can see some value in using it in some limited packages but there are pros and cons to some of that also.
    Thanks for another great video.

Look up “Ski Gun” from Muskegon HS
I coached the Pistol Flexbone for about 5 years
OSV was much easier, you could throw the ball much easier, etc
Cons were the B-Back hit slower, it took away “load” blocking tag on ISV and the answer to everything became bubble screen. Which isn’t really why anyone is running this offense. .

From the film of pistol bone that I've watched, it looks like the O-line needs to hold their blocks a bit longer since the B-back takes a bit longer to hit the hole. Is that accurate in your experience?

Requires more talent on the offense of line, which I think is one of the reasons why most of us run the flagstone we don’t feel like we have those prototypical tall thick long armed offense of Lineman they can move their feet pass pro. Most flex one teams are in a function with lesser athletes on the offense of line, use the speed of the play, and execution to make up for size and athletic ability
If I do have an athletic big kid, I want him to be freed up to play on defense. I will function with lesser kids on the offense of line that are smart and play hard

@@philipkoops9597Haha you just described my team exactly. We're a small town team in WI, and we have a young QB that has the prototypical height, size, and arm of a pocket passer, so some of our staff has been pushing to go to the pistol/spread look. But I'm looking at our o-line that averages 175 lbs and wondering how we'd hold up blocking.
If we were to put in pistol package, what would you recommend as 2-3 base plays out of it?

When we ran it while I assistant coach in Indiana.
We ran all your typical Flexbone plays out of it, with a more effective quick passing game due to the QB being able to see better and the spread out aspect of the offense.
      @Pat
Inside Veer was Inside Veer, Outside Veer was improved due to the increased depth making it easier to mesh. Midline took a hit because the depth made it hit slower. I feel like you need Trap or Zone Dive in the Pistol maybe more than you do under center. People used to give us problems with wide DTs (because midline hit slower) and ISV gets tougher against that closer B-Gap than it does when it’s open. Bubble and 4 vertical get better in the pistol......but you have to be comfortable with that being the “answer” to certain defenses. It’s an expensive play (lots of reps needed) and I never liked feeling forced to throw bubble in November weather.

I think it really comes down to the talent. A team better in space might want pistol versus a team that will grind would with the flexbone

Pistol is far superior to shotgun if you desire any sort of balance imo. Shotgun really only makes sense when you're in obvious pass situations or running the Air Raid

@@cameronmacpherson1959 I disagree, counters are alot stronger and screens just a little more time, the other issue is like I said, what kind of talent do you have, because a good coach should build their team around the players not the other way around

As long as there is execution, it will work.

I've been watching alot of film on the Georgia southern offense under current head coach Chad Lunsford. Would that particular type of offense be consider "pistol" despite majority of the time the two A-Backs are split or would it be simply referred to as a "shotgun" formation with triple option concepts? Thanks for the videos!

Can you still run Midline out of Pistol, and still have success with it?

You can, however it doesn't hit as fast, so at higher levels of football it gives more time for DL/LB to read an react
