This basically the what-if Kratos actually protected Deimos and Ares picked him thinking he was the real warrior due to him acting like one unlike his brother. Which could basically make Deimos spiral into basically what Kratos becomes in GoW 3
Man this is always going to be one of the coolest boss fights ever in my opinion. So much going, cool water effect for its time. And one of the best and unique endings to a boss fight ever.
You know what would make it better? Ares recruiting the young Deimos in secret and training him to be his “perfect warrior” instead of just torturing him. Wasted potential and moneymaker for the creators.
I suspect by the way prophecies tend to go, particularly in Santa Monica's versions of the lore, but not exclusively, that Deimos would have been the marked warrior if Kratos was for whatever reason killed/out of action. It seems to be more of a role rather than a specific person, they even solidify this in Ascension when the Oracle sees a vision of 'The' God of War destroying Olympus, and she figured it had to be Ares since he was the God of War at the time and he most certainly did intend to topple Olympus (Though iirc he wanted to rule it himself and cast out Zeus/anyone who opposed him, where as Kratos just wanted to burn it to the ground after being told it won't exist if Zeus is dead) but Kratos kills him of course, and becomes the God of War and then destroys Olympus anyway, thereby proving her vision correct, but she just didn't know who would hold the title. Seems to be a recurring theme, along with self-fulfilling prophecy, that anyone can take the role usually unintentionally. Even in the new games, everyone thought Tyr, then later Atreus was the "Champion" of Ragnarok, but instead Kratos fulfills that role since Tyr was in a prison way out of the way and Kratos was the only other qualified candidate to lead armies.
