Almost 60 years ago, this masterpiece of a song was created and was just considered a mere piano piece for a cartoon special. Today in 2021, this song is just as iconic as it was back when the Charlie Brown specials were first being made. Most people you ask would probably know this theme, and it’s probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Charlie Brown. This is one great theme indeed
It's great that there is more recognition of cartoon music (including eg. Charles Cornell analysis of various cartoon themes/music) because there is some really good stuff out there which almost goes unnoticed. Similarly, I never relaised until I heard jazz cover by The Consouls that vgm is actually so good. The best thing is that this great music is being absorbed by children/youth and hopefully will encourage a higher level of musicianship in pop music which has been in a bit of a slump for a couple of decades now.
I worked at college/public radio station many decades ago. I played this at the end of every shift I worked. Made the station manager crazy but when I left after graduation he had the whole staff sign the album cover and gave it to me. Best graduation present ever!!
Just had a cheeseburger at a classic restaurant in Marin County. My friend randomly airdrops me a picture of a man with glasses. I go “who’s that?“. He goes: “he’s a famous pianist and did work on Peanuts”. I go - Vince Guaraldi? Turns out - Yes! He then points over to the receptionist - who I’ve known for years - and says that’s her father. IMMEDIATELY got me out of my seat. He died when she was 16 years old. Blew me away! Gave her a hug. Tears, you bet. Amazing.

One thing I love about this masterpiece: it's raw. Listen for the little flub at 0:50. Instead of cutting and re-recording, Guaraldi just played through. We don't get to hear that very often these days.
_"Instead of cutting and re-recording, Guaraldi just played through."_ Of course he did. But the decision to leave that "little flub" in the final published recording was solely that of the producer, who decided that this live take -- flaws and all -- was good enough. It would have been simple enough to splice in a few bars from another take to cover the mistake, had the budget permitted it. Evidently this take of that particular section of the composition was the best they had, and they went with it, warts and all. That's not to say that the other sections of the final recording were not from other takes. Who knows? A skilled engineer can make several takes seem like one.

Vince Guaraldi truly served Charlie Brown & the gang with come classic, timeless music. I wish he were still around. Interesting thing, is that this music easily doubles as kid-friendly and as easy listening for adults.
Remember what it was to be young, when we were all young and nobody we loved was yet dead. Remember the excitement the Christmas Season brought? School gatherings around a Christmas tree singing Christmas Carols (yes, Christmas, not holiday or solstice songs). Remember going skating on a local pond? It may have only happened once as child, but it is seared in my memory, and music such as this brings it all back. Todays youth are missing so much, in my mind.
I'll never be able to fully and properly understand the experiences of past generations, but if people of all age groups can and will treasure this piece for centuries to come, then at least the ability to enjoy some semblance of the jubilation you've felt in your youth must have passed down, and for that reason, the past can never be truly, completely forgotten so long as this piece exists.
@@youtubeviolatedme7123 I think every generation experiences the same view: Our days were the best. Stuff that we grew up with become cast in amber/frozen in time. We always choose to remember the sweet memories. Every generation thinks that the next has lost something we experienced. For me, it is innocence. The world is becoming increasingly coarse and hateful, and too damn quick and impersonal with technology. For example, todays youth can't imagine a world without an internet, cell phones, and social media. When I grew up, we had dial phones, wrote letters, and grabbed T.V. from an antenna on our roof (Only 3 or 4 good reception stations, but hey, it was free!). Technology has only made our lives more hectic, and the age of "instant information" also leads to premature and unwise reaction/decisions. Slowness of time had its blessings.
Am I the only one who’ll play this song, close my eyes and smile as all the nostalgia thoughts and Christmas memories flush in my head till the songs over?
This is the theme Song to my childhood! OH what great memories I have, from listening too all of these Peanut classics. Today Jerry Granelli, the original drummer passed away at the age of 80. RIP Jerry!
As I listen to this song I have such bittersweet emotions. On one hand, my heart hurts knowing Christmas, and life itself,, will never be as simple, joyful and magical as it was when I was a child. On the other hand I am so grateful for the happy memories that I have.
I worked at ups for many years. I walked into the building one day in the early morning, and this song was playing. It captures the mood, the work pace, and the busyness of the season, but is also calming.
As Christmas approaches, I felt the need to express my humble opinion regarding this music. Nostalgia pervades the music of Vince Guaraldi coupled with the work of Charles Schultz. For me, Guaraldi’s music brings me back to my youth, to a cold Christmas day, surrounded by the warmth of both the cozy fire and my ever-loving family. To a time of pure bliss, where innocence and ignorance kept my mind at ease, where worries ceased to exist. As a young adult, I carry that longing for the past, who wouldn’t? However, that being said, I know I must carry on, for I will one day be providing the same security and comfort my parents gave me to my own children, and that in itself, is pure joy. So as I sit here… listening to the music of Vince Guaraldi and pondering life, I believe the words of Nick Carrway from the brilliant novel The Great Gatsby best sums up what I’m trying to say: So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. Happy Holidays to all! May the Music of Vince Guaraldi continue to bring happiness into the hearts of all!
And you sir, @Max Malmgren, are a gentleman, scholar, and solid in your roots and heritage. Stay true to that path, and vision, we have much to learn no matter our age, or station in life or achievements, each day is a journey. (Minor edit: Nick *Carraway is the spelling of the narrator's name in The Great Gatsby.)
One of my precious childhood memories was watching Peanuts cartoons and listening to the wonderful music of Vince Guaraldi. As a kid I really didn't know what Jazz was, I just liked the songs that were on the cartoons. Now as an adult I of course have Vince Guaraldi in my music library. When I was younger I was a Rock N' Roll snob and wouldn't even consider listening to Jazz. I had forgotten that Jazz was in my brain since a little kid thanks to Peanuts. Now that I'm older and wiser I can appreciate all music. If it touches your soul who cares about labels? Linus and Lucy was the gateway drug that opened my ears and blew my mind wide open to how cool Jazz is. As a fab 50 year old I still watch the Peanuts holiday specials and let Vince Guaraldi's precious music take me to a happy place. RIP Vince! Nobody rocked a moustache like you! 😊

Little known untrue fact: Schrödinger's cat provided the apocryphal cat guts for the strings played on this recording. If you check the liner notes, he is both listed, and not listed, so to this day we cannot determine if he was playing major or minor. I have further proof in the following link: - Inside this box.

Me!
Well, I'm in the last week of November 2023. Where were you?
The Peanuts Movie 2015 was one of the most magical movies just because of this song in the intro.
And that song was 'Skating'
Well, you can't blame me. I got to the theater about 5 minutes into the movie.
+DatBlooper99 same ;-;
I don't see how you could make a Peanuts Movie WITHOUT using this song at this point.
Especially the original.
So many memories surrounding this music going back to Dec 1965 when I first heard it. I was 5 years old.
So you're 52 or 53?
57 or 58 mate. Hey......that rhymed!
MsPrincesspaulina You would have been 3 when JFK was killed
This song is a favorite. I hop up and dance around my house like a fool every time ❤
Vince Guaraldi truly served Charlie Brown & the gang with come classic, timeless music. I wish he were still around. Interesting thing, is that this music easily doubles as kid-friendly and as easy listening for adults.
He was a genius. He is really missed.
His music is family friendly too
I listen to it any time I need a quick uplift!
My sister's and I used to dance so hard to this song in the living room, we made the record skip. Now I'm sharing it with my son on UA-cam. Wild!
I have listened to this every year for 50yrs.
Don’t worry most of us are doing fine (responding to the last sentence).
I love this Christmas song and I grew up on listening to it and its still banging in 2024
Jazz is the greatest thing to come out of the US.
No
Orchestral is better
I find it's impossible NOT to be in a good mood after listening to this classic
Is there a better childhood song that makes you immediately smile and want to jump up dance around the room from the first note that drops? No way!!
Unlike any of us, I hope this will live forever!
Christmas will always be as magical as you make it. Growing old is inevitable, but growing up is optional!
LOVE this Vince Guaraldi Trio piece.......I have a tear in my eye.
This has to be one of the all time best jazz masterpieces!!!
I had this flashback of me watching this and hearing this when I was 5, went to hear this song in the middle of April
My son's Philharmonic Orchestra performed this last week. He plays viola.
Good grief

My daughter loves this song. It’s a Christmas tradition🎄
A multi generation album
60 years later and still loving it!
I saw this when it was first broadcast and haven't missed it since!
@@MrBronx61 I salute you!
This song will always be great for generations!!!
Happy Holidays 2023🎅🎅☃️☃️👍😁🎄!!!
It's sentimental, even sad at moments, yet full of joy in the next. Like life.
What a master piece.
So as I sit here… listening to the music of Vince Guaraldi and pondering life, I believe the words of Nick Carrway from the brilliant novel The Great Gatsby best sums up what I’m trying to say:
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
Happy Holidays to all! May the Music of Vince Guaraldi continue to bring happiness into the hearts of all!
good words- thanks
And you sir, @Max Malmgren, are a gentleman, scholar, and solid in your roots and heritage. Stay true to that path, and vision, we have much to learn no matter our age, or station in life or achievements, each day is a journey. (Minor edit: Nick *Carraway is the spelling of the narrator's name in The Great Gatsby.)
One of the most legendary tunes in the history of American entertainment
This song makes me so happy.
Taught myself how to play this song on the piano since I was 8 years old, 40 years old now and still playing this song!!!Always been a huge Peanuts fan!!💗💗💗
I'm 66 and just learning it, your comment gives me hope!
you learned this at 8 years old? 0_0 I'm not sure I've ever met an 8 year old that could play something this complex
@@solomonjenkins9505My life has been all about music ❤❤
The first time that,I heard this tune,it turned me onto Jazz.
I've loved this piece since I was a little fella. Everytime I hear it I can't help but picture all the peanuts dancing on stage while Linus drops this sick beat

Bless their fingers. lol I'm trying to get this song. I am a gospel keyboard/piano player of many years. I read and transpose my songs in any key I want. The theme from Charlie Brown has me working my butt OFF trying to keep the timing. Practice will get this for me. lol

ACET 98 ah watch some more Charlie Brown :D

Pigpen playing the bass and the cloud of dust surrounding him!
Joe Cool, chilling out with Woodstock, and kicking up heels on the mini-grand!
Little known untrue fact: Schrödinger's cat provided the apocryphal cat guts for the strings played on this recording. If you check the liner notes, he is both listed, and not listed, so to this day we cannot determine if he was playing major or minor. I have further proof in the following link:

Happy 100th birthday to Charles M. Schulz
One of my personal favorite Christmas songs! And I don't just listen to it on said holiday, I listened to it on any day after or before the 25th of December.
RIP Charles and Vince.
Thank you for entertaining us for more than 50 years.
