Yes! My comment is above. And my thanks here again.
This is all good information for pain relief but it doesn't help your feet and the degeneration will continue. Why is no one talking about rehab and strengthening the feet. By immobilizing the foot you also run the risk of atrophy in the surrounding muscles which leads to further instability and risk of injury, especially as you get older. Secondly there are no shoe options for wide feet and the rigid sole (except maybe Altra I haven't tried these yet) and the problem is simple to describe, most shoes are not the shape of your foot. I was wearing shoes that were half size large and 4e width and the problem still existed, my big toe was being pushed inward and causing pain just from the fabric on top of the joint and it was worse if I wasn't standing or moving. For me I have gone barefoot, it allows me to align my big toe properly with the help of toe separators and when my big toe is properly aligned I don't get pain from the lack of dorsiflexion, just limited in movement. I now can't wear any of my traditional shoes anymore. I used to suffer from inversion as a kid and some flat footedness, now my arches are back and I feel the muscles in my feet changing and working in ways I never used to feel. This may not be for everyone since we are all individuals, I am mid-50s and have been strength training for a few years and would consider myself above average wrt to my fitness. My job is at a desk so I can moderate my physical activity to what I do at the gym. All these factors have given me the opportunity to attack this problem differently and I am now hopeful that this can be managed long term, where last year I had almost resigned to the fact that I may need surgery soon. There is so much information out there about feet and foot conditions in general that I think we all need to look at everything and work out some of this for ourselves.
I am so grateful and thankful for you and the rest of your clinics. You guys are the best and I am happy that there are options to heal my foot pains.
This was the most informative video ever on big toe pain! I've been dealing with this for year, not really understanding what I have - now there's a plan! Thank you!
You are incredible!! I’ve been suffering for 2 years and seeing this and trying the stretches once so far, I can walk better!! Wow!!!! Thank you
Excellent information! Thank you!!
Very detailed, thank you!
That error at 2:95 - “from your wrist to your longest toe” - made my head spin for a moment lol. FABULOUS taping demo!
thank you so much! very informative video, so clear
Awesome video. Best one on UA-cam. Thanks very much!!!
Thank you for this very clear and informative video. Ive had my toe tapped today and it feels so much better. The swelling has gone fown
I liked how you kept this to the point and even sped up the exercises. You also said what was coming up later at different times. I think I developed hallux limitus from stubbing my toe years ago on uneven sidewalk. Haven’t seen a doctor though.
This was excellent. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing from Scotland

Thank you so much! Very very useful! Thought my issue was my plantar as I had been advised of this before. Have even paid to do physio. The taping is a new thing and will certainly try this as I have been experiencing a lot of pain.
I only wanted an xray so I could see what the problem was.Right away the doctor scheduled me for an orthodic fitting and scheduled me for surgery.I had only experienced pain 3 days! So I thank you for you for your excellent expert counsel.Thank you so much.
That doctor is extreme Good thing you decide to research information
Why not just request an X-ray?
Ur the champ Man! Awesome awesome Video.

Thank you! I have an excellent foot Dr. but he did not show me taping or exercises or rolling, just left it all for the p.t. and I have not seen results in 3 years. Now I'm going to do it myself and I'm so thankful for all the info!
Glad it was helpful!

Thank you so much for this video. I have been working in extreme pain for the past 6 months. I finally saw a podiatrist but didn’t get this kind of information. I found the best shoes with hardly any movement that keep my toe rigid (HOKA brand) quite expensive but relieves the pain. I taped the toe up today and find that helps too. Thank you so much 🙂

The tape cast helped me so much. I was in so much constant pain I was kinda freaking out. My job requires walking. I'm having problems even putting weight on my foot.
Mine started as a sprain.. i thought it would heal on it's own.. it didnt (i didnt know what to do to help it) now it is hallux ridigous ..thank you for this great information
Just ordered some shoes/inserts based on your recommendations. Radiologist diagnosed "severe osteoarthritis" of my left great toe on reading xrays. Been living with it a while, but becoming frustrated at how how hard 8000 steps now are (for this 65 y.o. long time hiker that is a big effing deal). I'll review your exercises and give them a try. Thanks for a good vidoe and supporting links with good information. Have my 1st face-to-face with my new PCP in November (Medicare started last May and things have changed). Will bring this up with him, too.
Do you recommend weaning off the taping and orthotic when pain is better? Would long term use of the orthotic or taping contribute to further stiffness of the joint because it reduces natural big toe extension with walking?
I have hallux limitus and Altra Olympus shoes have been a life saver. Wide toe box, very high cushioning and a semi-rocker sole.
I love the Altra shoes but orthotics don't fit the best into them unfortunately
Hoka also sells a shoe with carbon fiber insoles. I'm currently using one and finding relief. They're pricey though.
Wow, best video I've seen so far both on the skeletal stuff as well as exercises and stretches- thanks for that.
I've got rigidus in one toe (pretty much no dorsiflexion at all) and limitus-approaching-rigidus in the other. Bunions that make breaking in new shoes rough as they're painful with rubbing/pressure- but I really don't have pain walking or any day-to-day movements, nor any pain while barefoot- just some flatfooted tiring when I'm on my feet for an exceptionally long time, which was true pre-hallux issues too. Local doc advises fusion on both feet due to no/not much remaining cartilage, but I still plantarflex fine and am reluctant to fuse yet if I'm not generally in pain... just bothered by new shoes. I haven't seen any vids or online info about hallux rigidus advice if there's not associated pain with movement. Thoughts?
There ARE a lot of good insertS

You too merry Christmas ☃️🎄!
What is your opinion of sketchers I was diagnosed with halux ridgeous and replace joint surgery I haven’t done it yet I’m also having inside knee pain this makes sense I just started pt for knee
Great informative video. I'm scheduled for a right toe fusion for hallax ridgous been suffering for approximately 10-15 years. Naturally because of this it throws everything else out, due to not being able to walk on my foot as one should. I also have right hip impingement. Will this operation make this worse. My left toe is on the way as well, I know the signs. For your entertainment information I'm in the UK. Regards Dave
I have saved this video. Will get the tape tomorrow and try taping my toes

Dang! I’m in bed resting from todays left Great toe hemiarthroplasty….. i wish I’d seen this before. Probably would still have had the surgery since I had 80% cartilage loss so pretty much bone on bone, but the taping info would’ve really come in handy the last year!
Oh, my goodness, the toe-taping is working SPLENDIDLY! First time in years I've been able to 'do my thing' (which includes exercising barefoot) with minimal discomfort. I've ordered a sole flattening orthotic too. Thank you so much!
Thankyou so much lots of useful information I am going to try out...well presented too.
Do you untreated hallux rigidus, Wendy?
@@Travis_22 as yet untreated.
@@WendyWahman Ah ok. I only ask because I had an Cartiva implant which is now failing 5 years later. But the taping has really helped combat the resurgence of pain for me. I will prob get a fusion soon.
@@Travis_22 I'm sorry the Cartiva implant failed, not sure what that is - but I've heard, and I think the doctors here mention it too, that the surgery doesn't last. Yea, I may end up getting the toe fused, but for now, like you and many of us, the taping makes it more tolerable. I just really don't want to start up with another doctor for another 'thing.'
You said you would explain how to use the wooden calf stretcher without bruising the big toe joint? Help
Hello, I have a thesis on hallux rigidus and I produce insoles. For which stage of hallux rigidus and at what degree of dorsiflexion restriction should insoles be used? I hope I could explain. :)
Thank you! I have answers now! I knew my issue wasn't a bunion, but had no idea this was my problem. Your self- diagnosis tools really help.
In summer, I wear Birkenstocks, w/ great support & results in much less pain. My problem is in winter, wearing shoes that cause more joint pain. Even large toe box shoes like Dansko rub the area.. What could be a solution for winter shoe wear?
I've had two ACL replacements in same leg & a complex meniscus tear too. I have a lot of inner knee pain. Could this pain be related to toe? TY
what do you think about pyro carbon ball implant for Hallux rigidus HAPI ,use in France since 10 years ?
I hv been dealing with that toe pain for 2 years. I was starting to hv knee issues. I bought a carbon fiber orthotics as you suggested and taped and my pain went away in a day!
What is the ankle brace for posterior tibial tendonitis
Good information, but my hallux rigidus is now bone on bone AND I have very high arches. If flat feet are the main culprit (and I don't stand all day) then how did this develop?
Is that you in those heels. Yours silly. I love it. Always laughing with you.
Thank you!! I can’t believe the difference the duct tape alone made! I’ll be happy when Amazon delivers the carbon fiber insert, but the tape is already making life bearable.

THAT WAS AMAZING. I feel, YOU REALLY want to help people. I wasso I need if this knowledge after hearing from my condition yesterday. I have Flat foot and probably h. rigidus and I am extremely happy and grateful for all for all the information. I was wearing barefoot shoes for 12 years because I had pain in the knees at the time. The barefoot shoes solved it but maybe caused this issue to accumulate faster? (living in the city l walking with barefoot shoes...) I still have my barefoot shoes. Do you think my orthopaedic inlays will be stiff too? I still have my barefoot shoes. Do you think, those carbon inlays are OK with the barefoot shoes? I am so used to them... Lots of gratitude from Austria!! Florian
I did break both big toes but have also been athletic most of my life (running, skiing, tennis, biking) and now have not only hallux rigidus (my podiatrist looked at the XRay and asked, "How are you even walking?") but the lack of big toe mobility has contributed to peroneal tendonitis and achilles tendonitis in my right foot which is the worst. What are your thoughts on "rocker" type shoes? I am currently in a 200 hour yoga teacher training and would really like to increase my toe mobility and decrease pain and aggravation
Va mulțumesc Domnu Doctor pe mine ma doare picioarele si nu stui ce sa fac.Eu sint din Romania si nu prea avem doctori care ziceti dv.😊
Seeing an orthopedic Dr. on Wednesday. I've had this condition on and off for about 12 years. Comes and goes. It's at a point where there's a bone spur on the top of my foot and stiff shoes aren't helping anymore. Last few days have been difficult to walk. Starting to limp. Tried the duct tape method and can't believe how much better it is. Still hurts, but nothing like it was. Hoping he recommends inserts. Took pics of the foot duct taped to show him. And will definitely ask about exercises. Thanks so much.
Hoping for some advice. Toe joint is moving as normal, but it hurts to put shoes on or reverse lunge at the bottom of the foot under the big toe joint
I was diagnosed hallux limitus with xrtays showing dorsal spurs on great toe. It came after someone stepped on my toe in basketball and I ran on it a lot before it was healed. The xrays show decent joint space in my great toe with very little cloudyness. Is it possible my cartilage is fine but tthe spur developed after a bad sprain and subsequent heavy activity on it before healing? Or do bone spurs always necessitate loss of cartilage in the corresponding joint?
dr. what do you recommend for flat feet? shoes and orthotics?
As usual your videos just add to my knowledge and more thoroughly explain what is going on with my various foot problems. Thanks

hey doc, I stand on concrete 8 hours mon-fri, my boss doesn’t like people sitting down and working.. will stretching in the morning and good shoes change my pain ? Or should I do something else. Thanks
I got this problem with my big toe but what mush i use for it
I had my knees replaced. My toe pain dud not happen until after the kbee replacement.
I’m going to try some of your tips. I got a big toe problem since I was 15. I’m 48 now the vein in my big toe is dead because I got shot in 15 in the leg over the years. My big toe is like a hammer toe and it pains for me to walk in shoes I’m at a point I don’t know what to do
I got pain top of big toe joint, when I press down on joint and lift up on the toe it goes up but can feel cracking in the joint, I wear custom orthotic for overpronation, in the past all my problems like plantar fasciitis and metatarsal pain was in other foot, this came on suddenly, I play a lot of tennis, did not do anything other than overuse. I have an appointment to see Podiatrist. Do you think that cracking is permanent, 58 yrs old, good shape. I can bend toe with slight pain now, after tennis painful ? Sorry 2 part question, can I play tennis with steel insole with my custom orthotic or does running with steel insole could damage metatarsal or rest of big toe?
Hey doc, I am fairly sure I broke the toe next to my pinky toe. Last summer. It’s still slightly puffy and the BOTTOM of my foot hurts after a long day, near the joint. What the heck?!?! Any tips ??
I believe I have Hallux Rigidus after my gout flare. It's been over 1.5 weeks since my gout flare attack. But once the pain is gone. I realize I couldn't walk correctly. My big toe lost all its flexibility. I can't bend it backward 90 degrees, not even close to 45 degrees. Plus I have pain on the side of the big toe too. So what should I do? Every time I walked, my foot got swollen as well.
Could it be gout?
I had swelling in burstis of right leg, so I was limping for few days and then my left leg toe started hurting 😅 now bursitis is all okay but my toe is hurting for 3-4 days.
Can I run with this toe pain? My pain is tolerable, I just don't want to make it worse. I however need to keep running/training for an upcoming 1/2
I’d love to hear more about fracture treatment. I left my appointment 2 months ago feeling like the sesamoids were insignificant, I could keep exercising, and this would be no problem. (Tibial) I quickly learned that wasn’t the case. Is there hope of recovery? The fracture was worse at 2 months with a good tennis shoe worn and no exercise. I’ve moved onto a boot & cutout orthotic.

Oh yeah, terrible foot pain, huge spur on top of my foot, pain so bad that I need to ice it every night so I can sleep. (I’m already on pain meds but keep that to a minimum). I’m a lifelong equestrian and have had bursitis in that hip for 25+ years…the toe pain has exacerbated the hip pain, so I’m now practically one legged.
After 4+ years of injections and orthotics….(injections only work for a couple weeks now) I’m heading to surgery soon. I’ll definitely try the taping on top of everything else I’m doing while I’m waiting to get the fusion. Thanks for sharing these tips and info- very appreciated!

Thanks for the tips, I had a irregular bone growth ground off big toe knock leg, hurt for 3 days. Got some movement back, I thin aggressive skying did it, landing jumps after back scratchers slamming toes in boot, made them blac n blue as a teen , bummer . I limped for years from a shattered femur from a ski accident. I think that brought the turf toe to a irregular bone growth? Limping sucks, walk proper even if ya gotta walk slow is what I believe, I will try some of the material covered , I do stretch my entire body daily, stretches I learned in Kung fu class and been doing for over 30 years now, thank you again.

So are you not a fan of cheilectomy? Should someone being offered surgery go straight for the fusion surgery?
I have hallux rigidus and my podiatrist recommends fusion but I am leaning more toward joint replacement such as the arthrosurface toemotion. Can you tell me your thoughts on joint replacement options vs fusion?
Hello there, just out of interest did you get this problem slowly come on over years and then become worse until it was an issue? I had nothing wrong initially as far as I knew.. was running often.. then just like.. 7 weeks ago all of a sudden out of the blue I got something that felt like a sprain in the big toe whilst running that turned into lasting toe joint pain.. wont go away now.. went to physio and they said hallux limitus. Now I guess I wont be doing anymore running. But was just interested in how this developed over time in someone else.
I was watching another vid on fusions which is a permenent solution and less drastic surgeries (of just improving the join and removing excess bone), which offer appently good relief for a limited number of years.. seems fusion has very good and permenent results that allow people to do most things.. I saw a list of activities and a satisfaction survey.. some people even manage to keep running (which is surprising to me). Check with professionals but from what Ive heard about other artifical replacements they arent super long lasting and can fail.. and if they do it can limit other surgical options. But again, needs a professional opinion.. I'm just repeating what I've read. Who knows.. maybe down the line they'll workout how to use stemCells and rebuild the join.. but it doesnt seems to exist yet.. I guess that might take a few decades or more.
Thanks for your videos. My podiatrist is treating me for Hallux rigidus but so far just an injection into joint which seems to help. You refer to your show notes which would would show what type of shoes and over the counter orthotics but I am not seeing the notes. where can I find them?

Thank you for being such a great fan, and we appreciate you watching!
What if I have all of the details and depreciations but no pain
Which is more important? The shoe or the orthotic?
I have concern that if the joint is fused there will be other problems as a result- your gait will change somewhat which affects the whole foot, leg, hip and all the way up ... much more inclined to do the bone spur shaving surgery.
I have stopped doing roof repairs or extreme bending of my toes. I have changed my footwear to a stiffer soul based trainer shoe which is also light weight. No issues to date after my last bout, funny thing was that I was considering using the duct tape and then I found this video!
I drilled a hydraulic hole into the bottom of my left foot and screwed an industrial bolt about half inch diameter up into my foot and out the top, then wing-nutted it on from top. There is no more big toe tightness.
Thanks for the informative video I really appreciate it, I have arthritis and bone spur in my big toe , I had injection last week it helped the joint where I have the bunion by reducing the pain but I still have pain in the other joint of the same toe the one is closer to the tip of my toe, I have the option of surgery but is it going to take care of my painful little joint closer to the tip of my toe?
Thanks for the great response!
Surgery can be very effective, check with your doctor for specifics, but combining with a proper shoe and supportive insole is usually what really ensures success for most of my patients.

Really helpful. I had a bone spur removed some years ago and the arthritis has left me with some pain and discomfort, but the overriding feeling of wanting my bad foot to feel like the other one. I want to just crack/snap it back so it bends at 90 degrees. It’s more the sense that I can’t stand on ball of my feet properly that is so annoying. I will now make sure I stretch everyday.
Wow, we appreciate the kind words and you watching FloJo!
I will do my best to make a video regarding this soon, I do want to make exercises for big toe stretching/popping!
If reasonable, we would appreciate a quick rating from you, and a good rating makes a MASSIVE difference for us!

Thank you for being such a great fan, and we appreciate you watching!
Hmmm…I have it on one toe but I have high arches - not the slightest bit flat footed
Hi there, I enjoyed the video. I was wondering if laying on the stomach with the toes pointing down with small weights attached to them, so it's like pulling the toe. I was thinking this may partially separate the joint so the bones don't jam against each other as much. What do you think?
Thanks for the great response Mark!
That definitely can help, I will make a video for this very soon for you. ua-cam.com/video/ZI0sANYDF6M/v-deo.html This video on foot exercises would be extremely helpful as well.

I dont understand the physiology behind hallux limitus/ rigidus "flattening out " our feet? Is it because we try to take the weight off the great toe by rolling outward on our foot? Is this why you say inner knee pain results of pronation?
When will stem cell injections be available for curing Hallux Rigidus?
I have been having this pain since I was in high school. Now the pain does not let up. I’m now 30 and it hurts constantly
great to know somebody is really concerned about these disabilities in people....

I believe my injury to big toe is wearing steel/composite toe boots and bending my toe inside the hard shell is what wrecked my big toe! What do u think?
Why do we have swelling under the great toe if the spurs exist on the top of the joint? I feel like the swelling from the spur actually makes me pronate too. I can feel a little bump under my toe.
My big toe injury happened in the military. Been living with the pain off and on since 2001. Finally went to the doctor because it was becoming to painful. The bone is nothing but calcium. Waiting on the official verdict.
I have had hallux rigidus for 10 years and used custom made orthotic inserts in my shoes. Also worn rocker shoes for 10 years which have helped a great deal. However it is stage 4 now and I am having big toe fusion ( affects both feet). Will my Gait change and affect my knee and hip and cause problems.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I hope you are doing well now.
What if both big toes hurt?
эти упражнения легко возможны если без лифта подниматься по лестнице и спускаться спиной вперед (держаться за перила)
I love how this goes totally against all the PT I just did for the past 6 months…. Everything was barefoot… hmmm let’s start over with these tips because I’m not pain free and see if these work.
