So, the Goomba became Mario's friend, betrayed him, developed a conscience and sacrificed himself to save Mario to make up for his betrayal.

It feels like Luke’s and Darth Vader’s relationship
I think my favourite detail of that was at 2:23 when the ". . ." disappears right as the goomba makes his epic decision. Really neat storytelling!

Goomba was a highly dangerous enemy, that was why he was imprisoned, everyone eventually forgot how dangerous he was, little foolish Mario released him, goomba came up with a plan
-Ok Im gonna befriend him so I can dispose him later THEN my plans will continue, THE EXILED GOOMBA KING SHALL NO LONGER BE IGNORED
He learned how Mario was and eventually took quite a liking to the guy, but plans are plans, and soon he would make Mario fall into his trap, and soon enough, it leaved him, but the foolish goomba knew one thing, even if he was cruel his heart was as lively and happy as a child who just want to make everybody happy.
As he stood there, he realized that Mario was struggling for his life, dodging the fireballs with ease, but because of his so long adventures he wasn’t the jumping man he used to be, he was rusty, and exhausted, goomba, remembering all the moments they went together doing every challenge they could, some harder than others, broke up, he HAD to defend his FRIEND.
As he stood up to break the mechanism that make the beast be fully functional, he broke in the inner part of the trap in the abandoned castle, and he would eventually do it, but as he was quite old too, he wasn’t agile enough and saw the fatal mistake he did, as all of his powerups were fade due to the hundreds of years of enclosure, the castle’s floor collapsed, thus revealing the brutal fate the monster and him would meet, his fire proof powers faded, along with his flying, just like before told , as he slowly descend into the burning magma, Mario was there and saw it all, goomba just said “Thank you” with a genuine joy, even though he was in pain, he felt at peace, as he had made his first and only real friend, but Mario just stood there, once out of the shock realized the series of events, he just tried and have his hand reached by goomba, foolish Mario did not comprehend at that moment that in fact goombas had no arms, he had lost, a quite unique friend.
His body was one with the magma, so he just stood there, watching the burning magma, everything begun to collapse, there was only one option, to leave the crumbling castle, with tears, Mario ran into the exit pipe, the soul of goomba also leaved and he, surprisingly, was forgiven by the ones above all, he also exit the castle, but as an incorporeal one, he saw Mario, and as a final gift of the ones above, they let goomba say a final farewell to Mario.

Cause mother 3s love theme
-Mario saves Goomba.
-Mario and Goomba become friends. But Goomba betrays Mario by leading him to Bowser Jr.'s fortress.
-Goomba leaves Mario alone with Bowser Jr. so that he can destroy Mario, but Goomba realizes that what he did was wrong. So he sacrifices himself to defeat Bowser Jr. and save Mario.
-Goomba's spirit rises out of the grave and says "goodbye" to Mario one last time before he goes to the afterworld.
That's a pretty touching story.
