On the surface anyway, the 2014 Yamaha FZR and FX Cruiser couldn't be more different. The FZR is built for extreme riding and racing, as evidenced by the recent cover of Pro Rider magazine, which shows a helmeted Dustin Farthing in full race mode, slashing a hard turn. The FX Cruiser, on the other hand, is a three-seater with all the creature comforts you would expect of a top-of-the-line luxury PWC. So what, if anything, do they have in common? Pulling off the seats reveals the answer: Yamaha's new Super Vortex High Output (SVHO) engine.

Forged Pistons because the cast Pistons have been failing in past years .

I've got the 2012 FX SHO and am looking at upgrading to the new model. After watching the review there's a couple of points I'd like to raise. This Yamaha still has nothing on the Kawasaki when talking storage. Yamaha need to lift their game and provide better storage up front. I've also heard the electric trim 'range' is less than the manual adjustment on the older model - disappointing if that's the case.
Apart from that it's a great ski. I've been riding for 19 years and still have my original GTX Ltd. I like coast cruising with my father who has the ultra 300 - if the chop is really bad the Kawasaki definitely has the slight advantage. I like the Yamaha though because it's a huge ski. It's great on big trips and comfortable enough, just needs bigger storage up front like the Kawasaki's.

You can never have enough storage but that's pretty far down our list of what matters.

Storage is pretty far down on your list on the industry's biggest ski - good to know. I can understand if you said that with some of the other skis in Yamaha's line up but the FX line up?
The rep was happy to say in the video says it has tonnes of storage though - what's he comparing it to? For anyone that's interested in storage here's a quick run down -
Stern storage - for light wet items. Both of my securing clips failed within 18 months.
Under seat storage - a very small 'dry box''. The opening isn't much bigger than a wallet but you could put valuables and the like in there.
Glove box - good size for a couple of drink bottles. There is also a tiny compartment above and just behind the left handle grip for keys/wallet.
Under hood storage - easy access and what you will use the most. If you are a solo rider going out for the day it's fine. Add the gear for others and you soon realise 'that's not going to fit'.
As a 'family' ski it fails on storage compared to the Kawa. Kawasaki has over twice the storage - the entire front section is cavernous. We've loaded a 300 up with a little BBQ, beach chairs, picnics and the list continues. When we use' the ski for big family days I'm always happy to have my fathers 300 along. I've got a young family and the more comfortable they are the happier I am. Once everyone is set up for the day I couldn't care about the storage - everything comes out for the days enjoyment.
Great points on the ski - can use regular 91 fuel. If you are running the SVHO this is a big bonus.
The ski is perfectly balanced when at idle - if you have 3 people on the ski this is a huge plus. Not all skis are perfectly balanced like the Yamaha's.
Swim platform is awesome, and the reboarding ladder is the best in the business - Kawasaki have nothing on Yamaha in the swim platform/ladder set up.
The FX range are great skis. When I upgrade the SHO I will probably go with the SVHO. It's still not as good as the Kawasaki 300/310 in the chop if you get caught but - we try not to get caught lol.
The big 1.8 motor is simply brilliant. Out in the ocean on big rides I feel very safe knowing I'm sitting on the reliability of a Yamaha marine engine. Sun is getting up, 34° here today -93 for you:)- time to hit the water.

It sounds like you use your PWC different than most people. For most, 33.2 gallons of storage is enough. We value reliability, handling acceleration, quietude, comfort, low-speed maneuverability, looks, quality of fit and finish and resale value over storage. Great rundown of the differences. For some, the Kawasaki probably makes sense. It's good you have one in the family...the best of both worlds.

Thanks for the 'dig', I can say I use it exactly the same as you and more. We wakeboard/ski behind ours, ocean cruise, hit the waves etc - we're no different. Just because one of your viewers mention that more storage would be nice doesn't mean we ride/use them any different FFS. As for the points you mentioned I agree, I own one, and will own another.
When they bring out the FX out with bigger storage (in line with Kawasaki) you can add that to your list.
