  • I have been shooting wide angle more for my street photography recently, and I found myself gravitating toward the Panasonic 15mm F1.7. In his video I explain why the Panasonic 15mm is currently my favourite lens for shutter therapy sessions.

    Since I have the G9II, I never use the 15mm f1.7. My 20mm f1.7II is smaller, slightly sharper and has better rendering to my eyes (more volume in the images).
    With the G9II, the 20mm has finally a quick and accurate AF even in video.

    The great thing about the Panasonic 15mm is that it is a compact lens that you can shoot wide open and it was designed for 4/3, the Sigma is a f1.4 and I believe that it was designed for APSC and adapted for 4/3 and it makes it much longer,. I have both as I bought the three Sigma lens for the 4/3.for shooting street or when you want a small camera and lens that 15mm Panasonic is hard to beat.

One of my favourite shot is from a white dove prancing on the street that came close enough so I had both the bird and the street scenery. Yea, that 15mm is fantastic lens and I think it lives up to its badge. It is making me question the need to run a Fuji camera alongside my m4/3, as the results are at least a match in all but the grottiest light. I also tried the Olympus 17mm 1.8 and understand what you are talking about. Ostensibly it is a decent lens, but somehow the images just lack the wow factor (I sold mine and bought back the 17mm f2.8 pancake, as I think it renders images that just look better to my eye, and its tiny). Maybe it could be low hanging fruit for OM System to update that 1.8 lens with a revised optical formula and some weather sealing;-)

    I really like the Pana 14 2.5 on an OM10 II: compact, light, discreet, a good image quality, you slip it into your pocket and the speed of focusing is no longer a problem at hyperfocal.

    • @lorenschwiderski
      @lorenschwiderski 11 місяців тому +1

      I have had no focusing issues, including speed of focus with the 14mm. You are correct, very good image quality, smaller build, and way less expensive. If a person is not in need of an aperture ring, there is little need to spend more. The 15mm at f1.7 is not going to be tack sharp; thus one closes down a bit, and well ya know, now it is more an f2.5 anyway. I read a really good article in this regard and decided to stick with just my 14mm f2.5. It is cool on the Oly PEN PL-8

      I have tested both Pana 14 2.5 and Pana 15 1.7 and I can say the 15 1.7 is a beast. I used it during my trip in Asia last March, especially street photography at night and it's been a joy to use, on both EM10 II and EM1 II.
      Even on the EM10 II it is light, performs superbly and doesn't look too big, nor ridiculous.

    I picked up an OM-5 and a few lenses this year (Oly 17mm f1.8, Panasonic 14mm f2.5, Oly 20mm f1.4). After a few street photography ventures, I think the Oly 20mm is my favorite, as it allows a bit more distance from subjects. If it's a really busy or crowded area the 14mm is fun. I need to work on my zone focusing, though. It seemed to me that the 14mm was much sharper at f4 than f5.6, but I need to try it again.
    The 17mm also seems oddly soft at times, too, but I need to shoot it a bit more.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  11 місяців тому +1

      Yes of all the Micro Four Thirds lenses, the Olympus 17mm is my least favourite. I normally shoot with 50mm equivalent, so any of the 25mm primes work better for me. I am exploring wide angle recently, hence using the 15mm more!

    Hey Robin, thanks for the nice review/discussion of the PL 15 f1.7. I used to have a O17 f1.8 and I replaced it with a used PL15. I was gratified that your thoughts are similar to what I was thinking some years ago. I was surprised that you call it your favorite street photo lens when you seemed to be so happy with the 50/25 mm normal focal length for your street photography given your past postings and the video you posted only two months ago about the 50 mm. Just thought it was pretty interesting to see you change your mind. I prefer a wider than normal lens myself for general photography. Thanks..

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  11 місяців тому

      I did not change my mind. 50mm is still my go to lens for street shooting. But recently I am exploring wide angle shooting more, so I have been using 15mm more recently and find that to be the best option for wide angle street shots.

    • @ElectronInc

      I went the same path. Started with the Oly 17mm 1.8. I LOOOOOOOVE the manual clutch, it's a shame this lens doesn't perform as great as the Pana 15 1.7 because I would have stuck to it. But I had a bad copy of the 17mm 1.8 which was a second hand lens by the way. But knowing it would have been like rolling a dice, had I decided to go with another copy, my mind was like "NO, I don't have a tone of money, so le's go with what is praised for being that great !". So I tried and chose to stick with the Pana. No regrets.

    I'm just a hobby photographer from Berlin, Germany and can't afford all the lenses you present. Not even used
    For street photography I prefer to use the Panasonic 25mm f1.7 or the Sigma 19mm f2.8 DN-Art. I don't like it so extremely wide-angled.
    From time to time I also use the Sigma 60mm f2.8 DN-Art in the streets of Berlin, not only for portraits, but for everything that comes in front of my lens.

    How is it that I have never tried this lens on my GM-1? Great Idea Robin! I have used the Panasonic and the Olympus 14-42 power zooms..I have even used the 12-35 2.8 Panasonic on a shoot,,(lens is heavier that the camera by far,,but gives you a good grip..LOL),,,but never the 15mm. It must be a mental thing with me--I bought the lens before I even owned a MFT camera,,then I bought the GX-8 and they have lived in the same kit ever since. I have seen other reviewers be critical of this lens because the 30mm equivalent doesn't correspond to a "standard" focal length,,it never bothered me and I think that you've proven many times that the image quality of this lens far surpasses it's so called odd focal length. One side note,,if used with the newer Panasonic bodies,,, the cameras' firmware eliminates almost 100% of the fringing you see on shots taken with Olympus cameras,, (same for the 25mm 1.4 Panny-Leica too) Keep shooting man,, We'll be watching!!

    If I want something smaller I use my Nikon V1 and 10-- 30 mm lens, just depends on how much detail I'm looking for.

    I don't shoot much wide angle photos. Most my lenses are 100mm equivalent or longer. For me 17mm (~35mm) feels often wide enough and I like it. Perhaps I should use more often my Samyang 12mm f2.0 (24mm). Some images I have taken with it have been very pleasing.

    Well, you re one of the few genuine photographers out there and i sincerely admire you. I have the sense that you prefer, as myself does as well, the 50mm focal length. Can you tell me , please, what is yout favorable focal length? I try myself to use onw camera and ONE lens for everything. I try to declare myself as an , for example a 50mm or a n 85mm shooter. This is how i see the world, and i d like my favorable photographer tell me his thoughts. I appreciate.

      50mm is still my favourite focal length that I use very frequently. However, these days I am also exploring other focal lengths, going wider, so I played with the 15mm more nowadays. Nevertheless, every focal length, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, or anything else, has a place in street photography, we choose what works for our own preferences.

    Between Panasonic and OMD Solutions they sure have a hodge podge of lens features. OMD offers some pro lenses with focus clutch and some with out. Some pro lenses have the LF switch while others don't. Some of their premium lenses come with a focus clutch and others do not. Some premium lenses are weather sealed and others are not I.E. 60mm macro is. Now Panasonic is offering an on/off manual focus switch along with a manual aperture ring on some of their lenses. No distance/depth of field scale though. I have that on my Laowa 17mm lens. To be consistent with my shooting process I will probably go with the m.Zukio 17mm when I go auto with my wide angle lens.

    Thanks for good review and helpful comment replies. I have been considering a prime in this range as I find the 12 to 35 2.8 a little bulky to take with me so tend to travel with the 9 f1.7 and 25 f1.4 was just given the 45 2.8. I'm wondering what would you consider to be a better alternative prine from 12mm to 15mm with excellent bokeh amd lightweight? I'm using gx8 that was a gift and have the em5iii which i find doesn't get the same results as the gx8 even with better specs. Would an oly prime lens in that range be a better choice on the em5iii?

    I know what you mean about the 17mm. I've owned it for years but never really got on with it. I love small fast primes though, like the Olympus 1.8s, and I also own the Panasonic 9mm 1.7. I think I might sell the 17mm though, because I never carry it any more. Really though, for the price, both the 17mm and the 15mm should be weather sealed, and neither is.

    I use the Panasonic 14mm F 2.5 and I'm very happy with it. I'm often out in nature and take a lot of nature shots where I prefer a wider angle. And there the 14mm come just right and the pictures are great.

    • @tomfenn7149
      @tomfenn7149 11 місяців тому +1

      I've got both. The 14mm is closer to an actual 28mm, but the 15mm handles chromatic aberration and purple fringing much better. I can't tell the difference between the two though in B&W, but the 14mm fitted on my E-PM2 is the exact same size as my Ricoh GR with its lens extruded. I just wish OM-System would make an E-PM3 and with a silent shutter, as this would be my go-to pair.

    Every format has advantages and disadvantages. Nothing bad about using the best tool for a particular job.
    If people get upset with what others choose to use for a task it is because of their own insecurities. They need constant reassurance that they are using the best.
    I would love to have a large format camera, but my budget says use the five different formats that you already have. A different sensor size will not make me take better pictures.
    If you displayed street photos that you have taken over the years, nobody could say what camera that you used to take each one. It is about the subject, and not the tool that was used to capture it.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  11 місяців тому

      I think it was not so much of people getting upset that I use other cameras (that is one problem), but what I find weird was people thinking I switched systems, which I did not! • @robinwong
      @robinwong  11 місяців тому +1

      You don't have to buy it new, it is quite affordable in used market, and pairing it with smaller cameras makes really compact combo, and none of the smaller cameras (E-PM1, E-PL9, GF-10, GM1) are weather-sealed, so I am fine with that.

    Thanks for that look at the PanaLeica 15/1.7! I am fine with you, bacause I like this lens too. Especially combined with a Lumix camera that offers the use of the aperture ring - sad that Olympus never did open that feature before and OMD even did not until yet. So the set of a GX9 and the 15/1.7 and the 20/1.7 is my favorite street combo beneath my GM5 with the 14/2.5. I love these small cameras and lenses. It's a nowadays likely forgotten domain of M43.

    Hi Robin, why are using Auto ISO during daylight, when there is so much light? I noticed all photos shown in this video have ISO 200. Do you not consider extending low to 100 or 80 when there are brighter conditions?

    • @robinwong

      Never ever use ISO100 or 80. You lose one stop or more dynamic range. ISO200 is the native ISO and it gives you the best image quality.

    I have been watching for a long time, even back to before the E-5 reviews. I love small lenses too and have several. However, I have the Sigma 16mm F1.4, and while it is much larger it is sharper and I already own it. I use it quite a lot and like it without much complaint. My camera of choice is a E-M1 Mark iii with a battery grip and it does handle nicely. However, I also use a Mark II without a battery grip and usually equip it with the Panasonic 20mm, a pancake lens I am quite happy with and have gotten used to its slow focus but appreciate its small size. However, if you could find a buyer for my Sigma 16mm I may exchange it for the Panasonic. Best Wishes Buddy!

    If I want to film everyday life, travel, walk tour to capture the environment and product reviews where I will behind the camera most of the time to do the talking, elements record for game making and I want to experiment music making with singing and instrument too and the video will be shot with a Panasonic HC-X1500 camcorder and Sony A7RV, what minimal multi use cases no show on screen audio setups are right for me, should I get just one stereo super cardioid shotgun mic or an omnidirectional audio recorder to do it all or combination of them to cover stereo and mono needs? That camcorder has an optional handle with LED and 2 XLR inputs but the setup will be tall even before add the mics, is XLR necessary and will I able to use the XLR handle on the camcorder as music recorder? The gear I have in mind are the unique looking stereo Sennheiser MKE 440, Deity V Mic D4 Duo, Sony ECM-B1M, Sony PCM-A10 recorder, Zoom H2n, Saramonic SR-VRM1, Roland R07 and Zoom H3-VR.
    For photography, I shoot mainly for document life and creative shots and potentially photograph for photorealistic shots, I haven't know how to get photography gig yet, I will use the A7RV to shoot photo but do you think it's for me I should go for RX100 VII, or something in between, but I think there's no much reasons other than weight to get unpocketable compact cameras because you get less handling and EVF but still need to carry with a bang or hang on neck, I know I can get great shots with RX100 VII or Lumix LX10 but I have some photographs ideas that might only able to achieve with interchangeable camera which is full body person with background blur from a distance, ultramacro and I want to try to join competitions. I not a bokeh person but a story and creativity driven person and prefer most of my shots to be fully in focused, and sometime I wonder do I really need to put so much effort into carry these gears when I can just google the photos I want to look at that other people already took, what you guys think, A7RV, G9 ii, GX9, RX10 IV, LX100 ii/D Lux 7, LX10, RX100 VII or something else? I was plan to get the Sony 70-200mm F4 ii with 2X tele converter which can get 1:1 macro and 600mm digitally too but that camcorder can reach that hence it's less needed and just I need to figure out ways I can get more magnification of macro hopefully with a tele lens too to reach things further away.
