One quibble (not with you specifically): I hate the term “world music.” Cuban music has very little to do with Mexican music, Brazilian music, Indonesian music, Nigerian music, or Indian music, and all of these countries have dozens of different genres. But we call all of it “world music,” as if there is only one style of music outside of the United States and Europe. End of rant :)
Same... however I still find it useful for classifying my collection... even though my tiny "world music" collection is dominated by Cuban (mostly all the BVSC related releases from World Circuit).
@@villane7427 well sure, kind of hard to avoid grouping all the stuff from other countries together in your personal collection if that’s a small portion of it.
Thats a good point. I heard the African drummer Tony Allen bring up the subject when he was interviewed by Gilles Peterson, Tony really disliked his music being labeled by some as World Music, and pointed out that the term is actually ridicoulous he stated that he Makes African Music.
I remember when the documentary came out in 1999. Anniversary Editions and repressings are great just to keep a continuous light shining on seminal pieces of music.
I picked this up recently and am pretty stoked about all the nuggets. This was one of my favs in the 90s and I owned it on CD. The book has got some nice anecdotes including translated lyrics, biographies of the band members, session info, etc. I love the lofi photography and of course, the recordings sound amazing, including the bonus material. If you’re a fan, it’s a good pick up.
I bought the classic records gatefold just after it was released and its still here sounding amazing! would love to hear the extra tracks and new mixes from this one though. Although I have a story about when I lived in Vienna and a record store had this on vinyl in their front window without a price label. I was a little broke at the time and figured it would be expensive if it didn't have a price on it so left it for a month whilst walking past every couple of days and seeing it was still there. In the end I went in and asked to take a look at it. It was the double pressing, no gatefold, plain inner sleeves etc. It was a test pressing! I paid 20 euro for it! :-) not quite as refined as the original classic version, a little rough around the edges but lots of drive and character. Wonderful vinyl bargain indeed!
Good morning Michael, thank you, I was just looking for a good review between the 2015 and the 2021 version. I had my doubts, but now I know what to buy. Thank you for your good videos, you really help me make decisions!
Thanks for these reviews, Michael. Very much enjoy them. The terms you’re looking for when talking at one point are the ‘attack’ and ‘decay’ of the instruments. I agree that hearing especially the initial attack very much conveys the intention of the player. So important when listening to music, especially jazz. Thanks again. I always look forward to viewing your vids. Cheers, Joel
I love this album ever since it came out. I got this release two weeks ago, togerher with John Mayer's new album. I was looking forward to compare the quality of these records, and as much I was disappointed with John Mayer pressing, I was blown away with Buena Vista one. First two seconds are enough to hear why is Mr Grundmann one of the top cats in the business. Thank you, Michael, for this review, always a pleasure to watch. 🍸
I just got it a couple of days ago. I have the 2015 release from World Circuit as well and to be honest, the 2015 one sounds very slighlty better, like it has a better signal to noise ratio or something (it seemed to go a bit louder when I swapped the records on the record player, while noise level remained about the same). I'm only a newbie audiophile and I find it hard to give more detailed comparison than that. But I'm suspecting it might be because this new release has the same music on 3 sides that was previously on 4 sides? I'll be keeping both records, I think - the 2015 for slightly better quality and this one for the book and newly released alternate takes and such.
The remaster sounds great i agree, dont have the classic records edition to compare it too though… would be interested how the remaster sounds compared to the normal reissue from i think 2014
Truly an iconic piece of music - no matter what your favourite genre is, you have to respect what Ry Cooder and the BVSC achieved during those recording sessions. I would also not sleep on Ibrahim Ferrer's solo album, which was also reissued by World Circuit earlier this year - music-wise, I think it is is on par with the BVSC self-titled and I think of it as a sequel.
I was fortunate to see the Buena Vista Social Club in concert several years ago. The concert was in Santa Barbara. Yes, the sound quality of the Bernie Grundman remaster is A+++.
I have the 2021 2 LP vs. and although it's pressed in CZ it sounds surprisingly good. I expected it to be pressed in a higher quality plant considering the stature of the record.
Good video Mike, question: why is your face all purlple/red/magenta ?? At you using some weird colored lights ? Because it doesn’t look good if that’s the case, in my opinion
I feel that's strange as well. I was under the impression it was remastered from the original analogue tapes? Or even just a RE of the last remaster done by BG?
I just picked this up and listened. Absolutely delightful! Fantastic sound, beautiful packaging and booklet.
Totally unaware of this reissue! A must have for music lovers as the original was a CD.

I just purchased the BVSC live at Carnegie Hall NYC album. A truly amazing group of artists and musicians.

I love the music on that record and am happy to see it getting some love with this special edition.
👍🎶✌️
Worth mentioning...It was recorded in Havana. The studio equipment they used to record was from the 1950's.
Not to forget Jerry Boys .
@@Tomagotcha Jerry is a top-notch studio engineer.
@@Rivcuban totally, I'm a big fan of his approach!
Love Wim Wenders. Love Ry Cooder. Audiophile version of Paris, Texas please!

What are your five best soundings records beside of this one from Classic records?
Thanks Michael for your review. I was waiting your opinion before to buy it.
I have the DVD audio version of this album and am looking forward to this vinyl reissue! This is an awesome video, Michael!

Is it worth mentioning you are reviewing the deluxe set and not the standard 2 LP that comes out here in the states on Friday?
I have the 2015 World Circuit pressing, which sounds great to my old ears. Do I need this? I mean does this new pressing sound better?
I bought it and it’s so great! Love it!
Glad to hear it sounds good. I’m waiting for my copy to ship.
Am i wrong or the 45rpm Classics was remastered by the same Bernie Grundman?
Great video !! bravoooo!

I love this album, especially the song Chan Chan ‘… el carino que te tengo no te lo puedo negar, se me sale la babita yo no lo puedo evitar… ‘.
just baught the 25th double LP and it sounds Great be it AAA or Digital
Just waiting for this album from my local Record shop but just ordering the 2 LP set though oh am kinda excited
♥️Wim Wenders. I'm late to the table on this album and need to check it out. Thanx.

Seconding.. kinda weird tint going on.
If you watch Michael's previous video he explains it ☺
Love your videos. Always look forward to them. Any ideas how many copies they have made of these?
Nice video Michael. Just also like to know your opinion on the Ibrahim Ferrer album, remastered by Abbey Road studios. I love that album too. Thanks!
I have not make good expiriences with Abbey Road but i havent heard the Ferrer
I was disappointed with the quality of the print on the book, which used rather cheap paper and the print isn’t crisp but is rather faded.
👌👌
"attack" is the word you want
Thx Mark :-)
I have the Classic records version and I don't it will be ever beaten
Hello, LP's made in Czech Republic?
Yep! A bit disappointing that, considering what a landmark record this is. A anniversary edition deserves better treatment!
Is this an AAA issue?
No it is not
@@Michael45RPM that's strange considering that my original issue is a fully analogue record.
@@Another_Audiophile Indeed strange. I have the 2015 reissue which is mastered from the original analogue master tapes and sounds fantastic.
@@daan5361 listening today and my original pressing sounds different. Not sure if it is better.

Hope it is not Digital well if it is hopefully I can live with it and Bernie did it soooooo
