I bet you're wondering: why are our brand's called this? Who are they?Yes, our brand name comes from a story that is very famous in China. During the Spring and Autumn Period in China(2000 years ago),there was a musician who was good at playing the Guqin, named Yu Boya. One day, on a boat trip, Boya played a tune he had composed before he became famous, but unfortunately no one could understand it, which expressed the lofty mountains and flowing water. At that moment a woodcutter passing by on the shore listened to it and said exactly what the tune meant. Boya said excitedly:"You're the one who truly understands my music!"and this woodcutter was Zhong Ziqi. They talked about music very happily and agreed to visit Ziqi again when Boya returned from his trip. When Boya came back, he had already passed away due to illness. Boya was so sad that he broke his Guqin in front of Ziqi's tomb. After that, he never played the Guqin again. We use the brand name to pay tribute this precious friendship, and we hope to convey this musical friendship with guitars. Know what you want and do what you need, become your musical confidant.
I like how the 22nd fret butts up against the neck pickup like a 70s/80s SG. I like that better than current (and original) SGs where there's a gap between them. It puts the pickups further apart like a Les Paul and also limits some of the neck dive by making it a little shorter. I'll have to check these out!
The thing I don't like about this guitar (or similar ones) is that they use push-pull pots with the top hat style knobs. Speed knobs are so much easier to pull up, and those hat styles are so difficult. Maybe this guitar is different (I don't have it in my hands to test), but I upgraded a cheap Les Paul style guitar to push pulls and immediately regretted leaving those knobs on it. Otherwise, no complaints. Looks good, sounds good, decent price.
I see other companies doing that with the color also. I'm starting to wonder if it's because the blue they choose covers the maple on the edge then as more wood shows through (aged maple can be yellowish) It takes on a slight aqua cast.
Very Cool, Thankyou. Stunning looking and sounding guitar and awesome playing as always. Don't think they'll be available in Australia, but still found this interesting, informative and entertaining. Cheers
I was very happily surprised at the tones. The neck pup was rich and warm, while the bridge had all the punch you could ask for. As for the frets, I like this style over rounded fret ends. Probably just because of my playing style, I find rounded frets to easy to drop to off the edge on a downward bend of the high E string. This kind gives you a slightly larger playing area... just my preference.... Seems like a fantastic axe for the price!

Hey, Max. Good video. The horns on a Gibson SG are offset and not symmetrical. The big body difference I see on the Boya and Ziqi is that the edges aren't really contoured and it's more of a slab like a Tele.

The name brnd Ibanez was borrowed in the 1960s in Japan because it sounded "Spanish." But Boya & Ziqi ain't got *nuthin'* on the brand name Dot On Shaft. I think it came from a translation from Chinese to English in an attempt to describe the neck of a guitar.

I bought a guitar a few years back that very quickly became my favorite. The brand name is Spear, and the model is called the Adventator. It's a solid neck thru w/ passive EMG HZ humbuckers plus wire tap.
Regarding trademark concerns, I'm just reminded how surprised I am that Dean's Gran Sport got lumped into the lawsuit and they aren't permitted to make it anymore. Of all "SG style" guitars out there, it was probably the one with the most variations from the original. Makes no sense.
I think that possibly the reason for such low pricing on these, and other "cheap" guitars is the fact that, with the current generations lack of interest in the actual playing and learning of musical instruments, and the general downturn in the sales of all instruments. This is because of their need for instant gratification and the mistaken belief that they shouldn't have to work towards anything, it should be easily attainable with very little or no effort on their part. This, of course, is a massive generalisation, and by no means is it inclusive of everyone in this generation. There are exceptions, thank God. 10:30
Nice guitar but with you playing I think we could give you a cigar box guitar a make it sound wonderful you always kill it when you are playing, great guitar playing.
Doesn't look like they're available in the UK. They look great and your playing was spot on. I have a MIJ Tokai SG so probably don't need one. Great value though..
The early SG's had such a comfortable neck. It wasn't especially small or thin, but somehow it just felt great. I had 2, long time ago now, but I think the first one was either a 61 or 64 with the vase on the headstock and then I moved that on for a 74. That then made way for a late 60's Firebird. All of these came to me cheap because of snapped headstocks.
@@restojon1 Thanks. I owned 2 '62 SG Specials and one '65 SG Special, and they all had great necks. My Y2K Gibson Les Paul Classic has that great neck, and does my 2006 Gibson SG Supreme. None of them have had any broken neck issues. I have a Firefly FF338 that believe it or not, has that same slim taper profile, so it CAN be done on inexpensive guitars.
Sounds Great, and as minor as it is, I like those transparent Pot Knobs. Set Neck, inlays, binding.... full LPBridge. coil taps. For under 400$ that is a good Guitar. I guess we see how they age.

First off, excellent fretwork as always. Secondly, this almost makes me want to make a left turn from my next acquisition. I'm looking to get a Schecter with one of those Sustainiac pickups. I really want one of those. I want to do a lot of crazy bends, and trem effects with that guitar. The guitar you demoed sounds pretty damn sweet. Definitely an odd name, but you can tell that they take pride in their work. I might wind up getting one of theirs next round. I do love the fact that this body is more the traditional SG, but I love how they beveled The Edge all the way around. It looks really awesome. Thanks again, brother. Keep rocking always!
I own two Schecters, both of which I bought online sight unseen, and they're both fantastic guitars. I couldn't be happier with them. I wouldn't go near any of these cheaper guitars that Max advertises. Sure, they look and sound great when he presents and plays them, because they make sure to send him a perfect guitar. For any other average consumer, it's a crap-shoot. Chances of getting a defective guitar are substantial.
Still waiting for an IYV SG with a vibrola that was only $206 on Amazon, takes a couple of months to get one, even if they do pop up, they sell out fast though, and you have to check everyday, these are more like a pre order type of deal, once they get enough orders, they start building them, not a stocked item, but definitely worth the wait.
Yeah, Max did own one of those IYV SG guitars years ago but he never did a review of it. Probably because the guitar was pulled from the Amazon listings. I got one with a vibrola for around $200 dollars years ago right after I saw it on Max's channel. It looked like an illegal guitar with that exact duplicate Gibson SG body shape. Gibson hates it when you make an exact duplicate of the SG body shape.
@@strangeuniverse1199 IYV make their guitars in Vietnam, and they seem to be a little better quality, then Chinese guitars, both the price and the quality of their guitars,is probably a thorn in the side of the big name brands, with the rising price of guitars, budget guitars will continue to out pace the big guys,it's no longer necessary,to buy an expensive guitar,to get a good one, there's always going to be,diehard fans of expensive guitars, but I believe Gibson gave theirself a black eye by going after the budget market.
You should give a look at HLK guitars. I own two and enjoy them both. My first one came with a hardcase and a five star setup for a little ove 200 bucks. Their prices are rising a bit but the quality is there.
HLK = Hard Luck Kings yeah? I did review one a while back and the guitar was good, but something things about the way they sell the guitars I don't really care for, and a lot of people have had bad experiences with them. Again though, the guitar I got was good.
There’s real gems out there at $300 I bought a Mitchell HSH with 5 way and a Floyd rose double lock and with a perfect neck that played great and gutted it, I put in pearly gates bridge, petrucci neck and hot stack middle position bout push pulls for the humbuckers and copper sheilded all cavities and bought a better 5 way also added orange capacitor and it had a low string action and I lowered further with zero fret buzz I played every guitar at Sweetwater sound some in the 3-$5000 dollar range but none compared to the Mitchell I can make it sound like a strat, a Les Paul and it makes such clean warm tones or can make it rock with that crunch or it can sing with great sustain so never underestimate a $300 dollar guitar

Just the rosewood fretboard gets the attention of many of us. Plus, stainless steel fretts flame top. . Good electronics. A killer first guitar. In my experience Indian laurel fretboard's most are good a few are compatible to old barnwood
Nice Vid and like your opinion on frets. i bought a Gibson Acoustic a year ago put new strings on it and put about 20 hours on it and just got too lazy to set it up as i've got other acoustics that sound just as good, even lower priced models. i'm not whining and know guitars need a setup, but I'm very disappointed in Gibson for the craftsmanship. it's uncool to throw out other manu names, but i like handmade acoustics at 1/2 the price that come from Canada I also have a Gibson Gospel that plays awesome, but it's a Jumbo and not a guitar i can just leave on a stand that i can pickup on a whim and bang out a song. And yeah, i play elec too, but i gigged in the 80's and did 70's cover band up until 2014 and just don't crank up the Amps as often. Your vids are invaluable to teach up and coming guitarists that ability is more important than equipment. And yeah, i had a Gibson Marauder when i was 14 and stupidly traded in my Lawsuit Univox LP Copy when I was learning to play Smoke on the Water. I'm a Geezer and wish i had info like this back in the 70's. Keep helping the up and coming Guitar Players and even us who played for 40 years. Dec 2023, Merry Christmas Axe Men, hope Santa is good this year.
I've searched Amazon and can't find this guitar listed. They show a headless model and strat-style guitar. I want to hear the guitar's clean sound. Also, most vendors ship doctored up guitars to UA-camr's who are trying them out. What you see in a video demo may not be what you get when you order one. I do agree with others the video was well done.
"traditional fret ends are better than rounded frets (eart) because they're easier and cheaper for us to install, plus!... with humidity changes they allow you to slice your hands!" The Eart approach (rounded) is superior because the fret end in slightly inside the fretboard edge eliminating the possibilty of fret sprout developing later.
Couldn't locate any info on this SG guitar on Amazon not matter what I typed in the search engine. Your link above is for a strat style, Jackson soloist looking guitar.

Never heard of them but it sounds and looks great. Which is awesome to know that you don't have to pay 6000 for a decent guitar
The biggest thing, is it doesn't have the beveled edges around the body. That's probably why they could have it symmetrical.

This, of course, is a massive generalisation, and by no means is it inclusive of everyone in this generation. There are exceptions, thank God. 10:30
He speaks so clearly and concisely!!
You definitely can't go wrong with Tokai
Thanks bro for the introduction to this guitar. I'm stuck between a Harley Benton and an ESP
Thanks for a good honest review. Looks like a very good buy for a budget SG style guitar.
You have a great channel my friend, I'm a Harley Benton man myself but it was a great demo
👍👍 pretty cool little guitar
thanks Max .!. 👍👍
As with every electric guitar, I'm interested in knowing how the neck on this one compares to Gibson's 60's slim taper neck.
From Leo: The SG is the only gibson solid body I like. That one looks like a great example. Of course Max knows how to make everything sound great.
I wonder if they used Chat GPT to make that origin story 😂
Probably!!!
Definitely sounds like it.
Sounds Great, and as minor as it is, I like those transparent Pot Knobs. Set Neck, inlays, binding.... full LPBridge. coil taps. For under 400$ that is a good Guitar. I guess we see how they age.
Man that thing sounds good plus what I like about ur videos u play power cords and stuff most people just try showing solos keep up the videos my friend
@user-lw2pm8iy7l guitar Maxx doesn't approve of this message, most likely a scam folks.
@@2dazetake To bad they bother the people here. They are like flies, you just can't get rid of them and they keep coming back.
I have a Boya & Ziqi headless guitar. It is really great. I like this brand and I hope to see more come from them. Thanks for sharing Max!
They are in stock now. Great review great playing
The packaging looked exactly like the West Creek guitars I've bought.... hmm? As always, great review and playing!
Dude, you always find the coolest deals!
Only one review and it is critical of the uneven rets and not being able to get rid of the fret buzz. Not a good sign.
Damn your playing has gotten good brother.
I just bought a SG special Cherry finish, but if I would have seen this one I might have thought twice. Very nice shade of blue. 👍
Looks like a Harley Benton. The way it has the offset horns and the neck is set closer to the neck pickup like the HB too.
So Boya was obviously a metalhead right. Went full mental and smashed his instrument.
Was only recognised by some...I guess that's a lot of musicians story lol
The guitar sounds amazing. Part of that is your amp and your ability to make the guitar sing.
Tone is pretty impressive. I have to look into that rig.
The pickups sound hollow and microphonic IMO!
@@mikeg6666 pickup dont sound microphonic they become that way. You're not even using the term right so how could they sound that way ?
@@dananthony6258 That's ridiculous and yeah they sound that way too me , very tinny and hollow! Buy one if you like it , what's the big deal. It shouldn't matter what someone else thinks!
Like the outline the 2 tone makes, cool ❤
I have to admit that I laughed for twenty minutes or more over your response to the end of this would famous Chinese legend; very funny!!! I am a relatively new player in the US, with a history of many musicians in the family and have been familiar with that legend since childhood. It is a unique and inspiring story worldwide, of the dedication of expression, even if never understood. ThanX MaX
Hey Max! I seem to be seeing some Rhoads body guitars on your rack these days. Developing a fondness for them no doubt.
Wow that’s a nice guitar ❤ solid build and sounds great! Thank you for great reviews ❤
Push-pull coil split should be standard feature for humbuckers IMO.
Max, very impressive review - you covered all critical issues about this guitar thoroughly and you sold me. Problem: Its not available on Amazon and I can't find one anywhere - any ideas? Nicely Done!
It looks the business for so little money, and it does sound rad.
Nice review. That blue burst though. I'll be sticking with my Ebony Epiphone SG. Cheers!
This thing looks almost exactly like my Gibson SG HP from 2019 with blueberry burst.
"That's the same problem I have. Nobody understands my music." Bruh...I think we've all got that problem over here. 🤣🤣🤣
Link doesn’t lead to same guitar but a different b&z model, my assumption is that they are sold out of the SGs
Sorry, they've been sold out of these for a while.
Thanks for the review!
I'd put a SD Black Winter in the bridge, and a '59 in the neck
For 3 Benjamins = Ibanez or Jackson and then add Dimarzio Distortions or Seymour Duncan Distortion pickups.
Couldn't locate any info on this SG guitar on Amazon not matter what I typed in the search engine. Your link above is for a strat style, Jackson soloist looking guitar.
I don't see this on Amazon at that link, sadly.......and this would be the one I'd order.
Dude!!! I'm that weird guy who met you at NAMM. Thank you for taking the time to stop and talk to me. It was so great meeting you. As always, love the guitar reviews. All the best.

Hey man! It was great to meet you! I hope you had fun! Thanks for leaving the comment.
@@GuitarMAXMusic I had a blast. I hope you did too.
good to see your so politically correct....the only one I see that you replied to black....aren't you special@@GuitarMAXMusic
Max, great review as always, bro! I have a "bouzouki " but that's a different instrument. At least they would run into any trademark issue there😂
Man you're a great player. You ought to demo a Quilter Superblock through different cabinets, I feel like you could get some great tones out of one.
Hi Max, I like SG guitars for their look and sound, but does this one have the same trouble with neck dive like the original post 1960's SG's do ?
Interesting. Model has ghosted Amazon, although two others present. Thanks for the demo! Priced well for my ability and wallet.
I clicked on the link in the description and that one must be sold out because it took me to a different guitar by them. They have 3 currently listed and all have terrible reviews.
