I save our Xmas tree and use the branches. The branches are good for a few years even after the needles fall off. Also keeps our local pheasant from using my garden for his dust bath!

Ive got bark from all the wood i split but got all dirty or i just didnt burn. Its working well, i should start using it in my beds to keep the weeds down.

I use a weed trimmer to break up the larger oak, maple and sycamore leaves into small pieces.

I always dump the bags of leaves on the lawn using the mower to shred them which I find stay still much better. Also that orange snow fencing is really light , does a nice job.Now I am using half composted leaves between the rows of potatoes without a worry.

Yes that's ideal, and you also get a little grass in there for nitrogen

Thank you! Just starting to get a grasp of this. We have so many leaves here, and they've been a great benefit... But we have pretty good wind here in East Texas as well!
    Thanks again 🙏🙏

I use leaves and grass clippings and they mat down pretty good… I find wetting fresh much helps. But yeah no issues with it all blowing away. Even the mulched leaves and what not stays put. ❤

Great tip about to cutting that mesh; I used an angle grinder last time but it kinda terrifies me!

Had this issue this spring for a new potato bed where I laid leaves down over initial seaweed mulch. Started with some lengths of chicken wire when I laid down the leaves. When I set down the potatoes I switched to wire remesh. Then when the potato grass was popping up I already had more mulch-material ready, removed the remesh and spread a load of past-their-prime daffodil tops over the leaves. Don't think I lost a single leaf to wind :)

Lol...great video Greg. I have stolen quite a few of your tips but one thing I find that holds leaves down really well is grass clippings...I am addicted!
I tend to put 6"+ of grass clippings on the leaves throughout my gardens. I basically compost in place as I lay down clippings in the fall then leaves and twigs. Then in spring any left over leaves I have and then just lots of clippings on top. They just hold all in place and my place to LOVE this as do the tons of worms I have.
Also the soil stays so nice and moist for weeks without rain which I love...
Spruce bows we save from our Christmas tree every year, just bag them up and use them in the spring plus the trunks of the Christmas trees make great bean supports...people ask me about them and then they count how many they can see...I have about 13 years worth!
    😂
Have a great day Greg and Thanks for the video!

Grass clippings and leaves make a nice mix of 'greens' and 'browns' too which make a nice compost.

Greg as always your garden beds are beautiful. Don't you think it's time that you trade that hat in...... never mind.... stupid question. Do you grow Zucchini? If so do you prune the leaves off? Or is that even a good idea?

Thanks :) Yes that hat has been through the ringer! :) Yes I grow Zucchini, but no, I let the leaves figure themselves out on their own

Just discovered your channel this evening - I wished I had discovered you 4 years ago, haha. Been sampling your videos and found lots of ideas or confirmation of what I do myself in my large eastern Ontario kitchen garden, so I subbed. I love gardening, I keep on learning new things or rediscovering things I knew years ago 😂 - I have been gardening since my early teens. Bonus - the discount with Vesey’s - I like their seeds (especially the golden cherry tomatoes) but tended not to purchase due to shipping. So, thanks for that!

I like the way you've been adding a section of a previous video right into the current one to illustrate something instead of just putting up the link to it -- so easy and effective!

Thanks. It takes more time in the editing but I think it makes a better video.

I run my mulching mower over all the leaves I gather. I just dump them out on the garden. The leaves never move and my garden is very close to the Bay of Fundy. Lots of wind.

I really like your ideas; using what you have around you. I also use lots of leaves, sticks, rocks etc. It is fun to be resourceful and find use for things you already have. Your garden is beautiful!
