  • 2 of 5. Late afternoon at arguably the best passenger train-watching spot in the country: Harrison, NJ, just across the Passaic River from Newark Penn Station. Shot from the westbound PATH platform.
Summer 2001 shows an Amtrak in transition: new Acela Express trainsets and HHP-8 locos are on the property, and so are the older E60s. The workhorse AEM-7s and Amfleets abound in three different paint schemes.
Most of the action here is New Jersey Transit commuter trains on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, and Raritan Valley lines (with a few other surprises). This was a few years before the ALP-46s and Comet Vs began arriving; you'll see mostly solid sets of Comet IIs (and their frequent tag-alongs, the Arrow I-rebuild IBs), IIIs and IVs hauled by ALP-44 electrics and F40PH-2CAT diesels, along with a healthy dose of Arrow III MUs.

Well, first of all, there were mixed III/IV sets back then, just not very many. At this point the unrebuilt IIs were incompatible with the IIIs and IVs, and the Vs hadn't arrived yet. Solid sets were generally the rule.

Comet IV 1996 with ALP-44M reason for this it's that Midtown direct Service Morris & Essex line which includes the oranges stations all the way to New York Penn.

@ This was 2001, and New Haven to Boston had been completed in the early 90s. Up until then there was a loco change at New Haven. New York to New Haven had been electrified in the 30s, but the depression and WWII led to a shortage of money and materials, so the job went unfinished for over 60 years.

Why is an hhp8 pulling a metroliner?

The AEM-7s and HHP-8s were used interchangeably on NortheastDirect, Regional, and Metroliner Service trains.

@@ajp31 but I thought AEM7 was meant to be a metroliner engine
