    Basic rules -
    1. Never put such heaters too close to curtains or other flammables.
    2. Be sure you have an anti-trip cut-off switch should the heater get tripped. This will shut off the heater.
    3. Don't put too many electric space heaters on at one time on one outlet. This will overload the circuit on that and trip the breaker - and when the breaker trips - you lose power - and you lose heat.
    4. Do not sleep with the heater on.
    5. Avoid electrical extension cords unless the cord has proper gauging and wattage to withstand the high heat from most space heaters--otherwise don't use extension cords at all. Use the space heater regular cord that is designed for the heater---and also--make sure that the cord is free of defects or fraying before turning it on.
    6. Have a fire extinguisher ready. Preferably a dry-chemical one because space heaters run on electricity. If the space heater is oil-based (not run by electricity), use an ABC extinguisher just in case it is on fire.

Fireplace flues can have the danger of creosote buildup, which, if it is built up too much, can set off a chimney fire--which can turn into a whole-house fire in minutes! Get your chimney inspected by a sweeper before you resort to fire in the fireplace!

Does this apply to pre-installed baseboard HVAC setups?
