On July 14, disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh was indicted for the murder of his wife and son. He is now facing 17 indictments totaling 85 charges. It is the most staggering case because it also involves a web of civil litigation regarding the death of Mallory Beach in a boating under the influence accident in a boat driven by now deceased Paul Murdaugh and the still under investigation death of Murdaugh housekeeper Gloria Satterfield and the staggering theft from her estate. Buckle up for this wild timeline; there is so much more to come.

So glad you mentioned Mandy Mattney. She didn't just report on it, she uncovered it. They noticed an anomoly and pulled threads. She has spoken truth to power. The other thing, the 'good old boys' are throwing Alex under the bus and trying to 'bad apple' him. There are a LOT of lawyers and a judge implicated in this mess.
Major props to her and Liz Farrell!
Came here to say this. Mandy and co. absolutely blew this apart and so glad Emily gave them their props!
I just wish Matney was more mature and less self-agrandizing. I've never been able to get into her coverage unfortunately.
@@Nonameforyoudangit Yes! Agreed completely.
Mandy is muddying the case while trying to make it some type of grandiose social justice movement that she's spearheading, and it is going to end up working in Alex's favor. It's not a social justice movement. It's a murder trial. This isn't about her. The exact same thing happened in the Tara Grinstead case with the Up and Vanished podcast, and the family of the victim ended up suffering because of it while the people who committed the crime got lenient sentences.
I was actually working on Parris Island Marine Corps Base (part of a civilian historic research contract) when the boat accident happened that kicked off this whole mess. We were driving over the bridge early one morning that connects Parris Island to the mainland when we saw all these emergency vehicles and civilian trucks parked along the marsh's bank. We asked one of the officers on base what happened and he said some rich kids were driving a boat drunk the night before and crashed into the bridge. One of the girls was missing and they were looking for her body. I remember the officer saying the guy driving the boat was from some well known family. I didnt think of the accident again until the 20/20 documentary came out. Little did I know how crazy everything got after that!!!
Thank you for covering the Murdaugh case. This case is so multi-layered and expansive. I’m sure we haven’t heard of all the crimes committed. This case will be a career! LOL
❤ So glad you're looking at this case. Here in SC, we are excited to see everyone involved in this mess held accountable. Mandy and her team are wonderful!
Same here over in SAV Beth! I’ve been shocked by how little attention it has been getting for the past few years
@@pawnerd3525 It's starting to pick up traction. There is no telling where it will end.
@@pawnerd3525 It got derailed by Depp v. Heard, methinks, and Jan 6. And a couple of mass shootings.
There was a year that we were broke and there was an organization that brought my girls presents for christmas. I bawled like a baby when they brought the gifts. I love that they set that up in her honor.
Timely content for me... I was just listening to a Murdaugh Murders podcast. This case is absolutely WILD! Thank you for covering.
Right before I got home someone seemed like he was intentionally trying to hit my car. My brain wandered about insurance fraud, then when I got in my driveway curiosity had me googling if anyone had ever accidentally unalived themselves attempting to commit insurance fraud. Literally all the results on google that popped up were about this case, which I had never heard of. As I am scrolling through the results, I get a notification that Emily posted this video right as I was reading about it. So odd!
@@lovethatforyou533 I started watching this on Discovery, and it seems like that family did what they wanted, when they wanted, going back generations.
This is the first case in a long while where I've sat back and said "I can't wait to see the movie". Because it is WILD. Thanks for your clear coverage!
Netflix need to do a series..wow the madness 🤯😵💫
South Carolinian here. Been following this. This case is mind-blowing. So much corruption!!!
It is seriously UNBELIEVABLE. I went to College of Charleston, so I've been following too! ❤
Same here! Son is currently an attorney in Greenville - “Corruption at its finest”
Nowhere near SC, been following since the beginning and I don’t know why other than it’s interesting.
I'd love to see a video on Gloria Satterfield's death investigation with you and Caitlin Doughty (Ask a Mortician)! You're both incredible at what you do, it's a dream combo 😀💜
“So I think we can call him Dick”
The amount of laughs you give me, you’re the best! 😂
He really does go by the name Dick Harpootlian.
This is so good 😂
Poot!
20/20 covered this case in a 2hr special last week. It was very thorough and in-depth. Unbelievable, jaw dropping case.
As someone who lives in SC I can tell you this has been the talk of the state since his family was found murdered last year! So great to hear you shout out Mandy and the podcast! She has done an amazing job in her reporting! Highly recommend anyone interested in this case to listen to the podcast! You will binge it!
I lost count of how many times Emily said "there is more", seems like that is the tagline of this case
y
"But wait, there's more!"
Oh yes watch the discovery documentary it’s insane lol
I got interested in the murders, and never ever expected things to unravel like this.
@@JM-ot8ux Uncivil Law posted a video about a week ago where he explained all the moving part in a very easy to follow way. This case is so complicated
As a South Carolina gal I have been watching this case from the beginning. It’s extremely complicated and full of secrets and a well-known, respected family. Everyone in the state has heard of this family and the powerful law firm.
Were they respected or seen as a little bit skeevy? But not so skeevy you want to investigate, just kinda skeevy?
That is my favorite closing ever, Emily! 😂😂😂
May your wifi be strong… your gas not $7, and May the odds be ever in your favor 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
You literally are the best. Love you Emily! 💜
I kept waiting for “He bing’d!” as Emily was tallying up the charges 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
*standing ovation*
Move your head!
And bing'd and bing'd and bing'd. I'm sure there will be more by the time this is done.
🤣🤣🤣
Mandy Matney is great. Thank you for giving her credit.
Other than the vocal fry and mispronouncing everyday words, she’s great. I wish she’d address her speech issues with a pathologist if she wants to be a broadcast journalist.
@@kathrynwitte3398 it's so annoying
I think this is my favourite UA-cam channel. It’s just fascinating listening to you breaking down each case and explaining the legal terminology. I’m addicted 💜
Super happy to catch a live. Working from home since crazy weather has closed roads around me. Thanks for keeping me company 🙂
Are your roads melting from the heat?
@@cricket8438 Aw, dontcha know that's all a hoax and we never landed on the moon either.
I live in New Zealand there have been big landslides due to all the rain.
Some extra points to add:
- Paul was suppose to have a hearing for the boat accident 3 DAYS after he was murdered. At the hearing, Alex’s financials were to be presented.
-Alex and Maggie weren’t even living together at the time. Maggie was living at the family’s beach house in edisto island. Alex asked her to come to the house the night she was murdered.
-Paul wasn’t even suppose to be at the house that night. It’s not known if he came with his mom, or just showed up that night.
-From reports, Paul and Maggie weren’t found near each other.
-Maggies phone was missing from the scene (Paul’s was found, and apparently he took s Snapchat video earlier that night where you can hear Alex talking in the background), but her phone was found in the side of the road a ways away from the house.
-SC was trying to bring back the electric chair for the DP, and there is one inmate on DR that wanted the firing squad to be used! A big big big BIG supporter of bringing back the DP is Alex’s head lawyer!!!
-Speaking of Alex’s lawyer. He was actually the lawyer for Paul in his boat accident case! And now the same lawyer is representing Alex!
There is so much more! They will have to do a change of venue, bc everyone in that county has a tie to the Murdaugh’s in one way or another.
UK here - this case is mindblowing! You are epic by the way, look forward to every single post you do & got me soo interested in Law x
The Murdaugh case is absolutely riveting. Please cover all upcoming indictments and beyond. Including the Stephen Smith investigation. Thank you for your wonderful work.
Wow, this truly breaks my heart, A family divided & killed, all in the name of Money, greedy & drugs 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
It goes way beyond one family.
An awful family that has injected their personal agenda and interests into South Carolina for generations. I'm unhappy about the murders, especially the non-family murders, but at least this legacy is going down the drain. Who knows what else this family has done over the past 100 years.
This case is truly a clusterfluck. I would love to hear your thoughts on judge Carmen Mullen's involvement.
Emily my friend - will you please touch on the Heard appeal briefly? I know you would like to know if we are interested - YES we are interested at least I am interested. You do a good job explaining Lawyer and court talk and we appreciate that very much.
Emily can expound on this, but the reality is that Amber is out of legal options. Everything she tried to appeal based on has been overruled as far as I've seen. She will remain legally beholden to pay her debt.
I’m pretty sure this is from the podcast. Not live.
I am somewhere in between fascinated and bored of the AH and JD court talk but I’m with you….I have been trying to find more information but a lot of the videos on YT are clickbait/ getting facts wrong 😑
I’d like to know the real story andVA law as to how much she had to hand over in order to appeal. I’ve heard 10.375 plus 6% annually, $500, and yesterday $100,000. Which is it??
@@daniellejones1229 so true but I feel like it is was 500$ or 100,000 she would have started the process earlier
As a South Carolinian, I've been down this rabbit hole for awhile now. Talk about convoluted! Wow!
One of my coworkers and myself have been water cooler talking this case from the beginning (also from SC)
Same.
I started following the case and I had to step back for a while. My head was exploding. How can this happen?
Same here. It’s overwhelmingly f’ed up!
It's like Emily said over and over "there is more"
I kept going, wait, that is still the same case????
Emily, gigantic kudos to you for teaching (more like allowing [I've raised teenage boys]) your son to cook! You are a good Mom (I taught my 2 how to cook, clean house, do wash, iron and grocery shop). When it came time for them to fly the coop, they were/are self-sufficient 😊
I was gonna drink every time you said “indictment”, and quickly realized that was a TERRIBLE idea! Sloppy Cheers🍻 from Wookie Style Tattoos AZ replay crew! 💜
I would love to hear your thoughts of the “good old boy” network that protected Alex and his family for so long.
Just Standard stuff. It exists everywhere.
Thank you for breaking this case down. The layers of this case is crazy.
Lol, have only got through the ad… but just have to say that the absolute worst think about adulting is that suddenly I’m expected to know the answer to the question “what’s for dinner tonight”!! 😂
Absolutely fascinating - your exploration of the various threads is superb. Thank you!
Mandy Matney and the MMP team are phenomenal! Thank you for giving them a shout out! And for your coverage of this mess, too!
Part of Replay Crew Emily. I was looking for something live from you earlier but I didn't check my messages so now I am actually on replay, I usually need to be in general. so good to see you. as always, you make me informed and happy
Thanks for sincere credit to Mandy and FITS News!
Wow! This case has so many twists and turns. It’s crazy. Murdaugh needs to never see the light of day.
You have to repeat the gamer daddy, leather daddy and, lumber daddy stream. I re wached it today. That was best ever. 💜💜💜💜Love from Germany.

@@CS-lm5re two weeks ago. My favorite show ever.
I just heard you talk about this today on Idaho Bk case. So I looked it up and now here I am! Jan. 12th.
"Honey, why does your updated will say 'I leave everything to my surviving family?'"
"You're about to find out."
Im so glad you are covering this. I have been following since I stumbled upon this in early 2020, and have been listening to Mandy and the Fitts News team. Amazing work they are accomplishing.
The Satterfield thing is so sad - especially when you hear the 911 call made. They were so uncaring for someone who worked for them, and they considered family.
Is there any possibility of any of these trials being covered live?
I love that Mandy Matney got a shout out! I've been listening to her podcast from day 1. If anyone here hasn't listened, I highly recommend it.
I have been listening to Mandy’s podcast. It’s amazing. And I love that you are covering this too. Thank you!!
Oops, accidentally sent my message before completed. Emily, you said it: "this is staggering". I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around all of this! But, in Emily style and eloquence, I know you will break it down into comprehendable bites. Please know that we love you and sincerely appreciate your hard work bringing us law nerds chewable facts ❤️
You said "his name is Richard so we can call him Dick." Please and thank you! 🤣
Emily I have never wanted you to break anything down more than this case
I love when you break the legal documents down
I am so grateful I found you and our podcast. Amazing and educational
ALWAYS a brilliant discussion! Thanks, Emily!
I am not or was not a law nerd in way !! But since finding your channel I’m here for it ALL.. you help us understand so much. Thanks for your humor, guidance and realness!!
Thanks for another great TES. Also want to thank you for getting so angry when covering this and the Girardi case.....it is reassuring when an attorney gets mad when the legal system is abused; it gives me hope that justice CAN prevail! Thanks!
Yeah, let’s hit some of the indictments!!! This seems crazy complex - it would be awesome to have you break down some of the particular charges etc.
Excellent timeline! Thanks for making sense of this mess!
THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS!! I commented this on your post and I’m so so glad you’re doing this thank you a hundred times over ❤️❤️
Can’t wait to watch ! I’ll be a bit behind on the replay today 🖤🖖🏻✨
you'd think at some point he'd have took his chips and walked away instead of continuously doubling down on this insanity. yes i'm sure the suicide by hitman was that but when it didn't work out he went fight back into gambling again. at this point he's probably got more indictments than all the cases you've covered in the last year
I guess he had that sunk cost fallacy thing going on 🤷
This is all so crazy and while watching this, I just realized that this was the family my friend was telling me about in 2018 when we were in SC!! I went with her for Thanksgiving break back to her mom's house in SC and when we were driving we passed a huge estate and she started talking about how there were rumors about the family killing people.... how shocking that those rumors seem to be based in fact!!!
Am I the only one that needs a score card? .I can’t keep up with all the bad guys.
Duuuuuuudddeeee. I’m from SC and have been following this case for a while. Quite frankly, so many things keep being uncovered that they just can’t keep up with the indictments. Mandy Matney and her team have been essential to being down the “good ‘ol boy” system that is rampant in our state. As for his first name being Richard, I laughed so hard when you said “I think we can just call him Dick.” His criminal defense lawyer is named Dick Harpootlian, and I still laugh like a teenage boy every time I hear his name. As for Stephen Smith, the young man killed in 2015 and connected to the Murdaughs, he recently received a proper headstone seven years after his murder thanks to local fundraising efforts. And yes, I will watch the miniseries (too much for just a movie) with popcorn.
This won't be a Mini series, this is long form shit! 🤯
@@upmayo9741 And we probably won't know the full-full story for a year or more - you know, dots connected and all. I want to wait for a solid, well-researched, thorough documentary.
Mandy Matney is awesome! Been listening throughout this past many months. Great reporting. Excellent instincts.
Please, more breakdowns! Would Mandy be interested in popping in for a crossover episode, I wonder?
Can you cover the bond hearing?! That was crazy!
The Murdaugh Murders podcast is great. First heard about it here and then binge listened for the last week. Very thorough, balanced and compassionate reporting. Five star review!
Oh boy, here we go with the Murdaugh case. So crazy🤯
Thank you Emily for the podcast. Love what you are doing. A joy to watch. I am in New Zealand. 💖
(Info on the area) I'm from PA & my husband is from Walterboro, SC- , we met in the Army at Ft. Bragg. I have never been in "the country" until I married my husband. I say this to say when driving around in hubby's hometown the counties changed very quickly, I wasn't surprised there were so many different counties. In Walterboro, there are no corner stores, very low cell service, no big malls or close by grocery stores(which is about 5-12 miles away). There are homes that still display the confederate flag & in 1990 there was a plantation 3 miles from where my husband lived (shackles & huts now removed). Coming from PA this was truly different. Now I'm only describing Walterboro because this is where the trial is taking place (Emily let me know if I have this wrong). There is not much traffic there unless you have family or you getting off the highway for gas. However, in Charleston, SC it is totally different and much more traffic. It's a beautiful place (Charming old buildings, Horse Carriages, nice restaurants & beautiful beaches). Emily, would this be a reason to choose Walterboro or is it a legal reason? Loving your breakdown!
I apologize typo: I meant to say hubby is from Ritter, SC 5-12 miles outside of Walterboro. Walterboro has people stop for gas or to eat unless you live in the surrounding counties and you will do your grocery shopping, Walmart, gas, restaurants and and it is a small city. Sorry for confusion
As always, you deliver the best material on these law cases. Good review 👍🏾👍🏾
Dude. I love you Emily. I’ll catch you in the morning with the replay crew. I’ll be watching the prime time hearings tonight.
Alec actually encouraged the Satterfield family - Mrs. Satterfield’s sons- into suing his insurance company for wrongful death. Then they never received the settlement. Alec kept the money himself. There’s another suspicious death of a young man, a friend of his son Buster who was found a few miles from their hunting lodge dead. The death was ruled a hit and run but the case was always suspicious and now considered likely a murder. Buster was kicked out of USC law school. Paul the younger son killed a girl in a drunk driving boat accident. Lots to consider.
I like Emily's spontaneous style. Conversational and ironic but scrupulous all at the same time, knowing enough not to pretend to know everything but with a good handle on the bigger picture . She has won the right to wear a baseball cap in court. She'd make a good judge.
This was very interesting and I’m so glad I found you! Could you talk about the potential conflict of interest of Harpootluian representing Alex when he previously represented Paul, now allegedly killed by Alex?
Glad you are covering this Emily! Fits News also has a UA-cam Channel with lots of interesting videos about Murdaugh and other people involved in the case.... and the Podcast is also on UA-cam now. :)
So pumped! Thank you for covering this!
Hello from scorching hot Austin (also newly diagnosed ADHD at age 60 😫)
Please continue covering this case. I have loved the Murdaugh Murders podcast.
yes keep covering! this case is very complicated with a lot of victims affected by this crook.
I missed the live version but I absolutely love diving into this case. Totally agree, Fitz News has been incredible in their coverage of this case & the podcast is great.
This is like some real-life True Detective shit. Hopefully Nic Pizzolatto is watching this case closely and hopefully Woody and McConaughey can get their schedules cleared over the next few years.
Gloria Satterfield (housekeeper) died in Feb 2018, Mallory Beach (boat accident) died in Feb 2019. One year apart - not days.
I think the SCSC views dismantling the Murdaugh legal institution that essentially ran the town/county they lived in as imperative
Yup, looks seems the favourite son,(the not dead 9ne) was being groomed to be the next cog? Either that or daddies missing insurance money, the suicide/murder stuff was to provide sonny boy with millions to grease his way thru life???? Much more digging into the kids finances??
@Emily D. Baker
I know you're tired of the JD v AH case, but just wondering if, after you get through the stuff you've put off a bit for it, if you plan on going through some of the stuff that wasn't allowed in the trial?
I know she plans on going through some of the unsealed documents once they’re released.
@@VirginiaGeorge
I thought the judge unsealed them about a week ago? I guess maybe not yet released on that site where one can see them is the difference? I for some reason thought they would be viewable by the following day... lol!!!
Silly me thinking they already had everything downloaded and it would be a quick turn over!! What was I thinking, government red tape and all, slow as molasses at Christmas time, and we mustn't forget the need to send an email for it to be done.
Then an email going from that person either to someone lower in their department or out to the supervisor of another department which then would trickle down through a couple of desks/managers before actually getting to the person who would actually have to either scan everything in and maybe post it on the site. If that person doesn't post then it will at minimum go to one more desk to be put on the site, might have to go back through the chain and someone else be assigned in the dept. for that or go out to another department and through another chain and when that gets loaded still back through the chain to supervisor however far up needing to go and back down for and then with approval before the final enter is hit so everyone can see them!!!
Some of the things the government justifies and yet is almost completely redundant several times over, so they can say this will fix the problem, instead of reorganizing, firing if need be, etc. before even thinking about just adding a new person to the already dysfunctional and usually not change much else, which ends up with overspending and of course a waste of our money, even more than it before the added hire with no firing happening and/or a change in functioning operation of the office.
I’m so happy you’re following this wild case!
This case always reminds me of "who killed sara" the TV show on Netflix. So many similar elements
It just gets more intense. Looking forward to hearing more.
What on earth is the countdown video 😂 that was a pleasant surprise haha! Been waiting for this video, can't wait to hear the breakdown 🥂🥂
This is my first time hearing about this case and it sounds like a movie! I am not making light of the issues it feels very unbelievable and surreal. Thank you for the explanation of the case. I am curious to see how will this be case be tried when theirs an established podcast solely dedicated to this case everyone has knowledge of it. You continue to educate me and I am appreciative of what you do in breaking the information down to be understood. Also and ADHD person.
This case is so wild. Complicated and crazy
This is something else. This case has so much going on.
Can you interview Mandy Matney on your show? A zoom interview? I want to hear about her investigation process and experiences.
I would love any and all coverage of this case I could get from you! I'm in Columbia, SC. This is a huge story, naturally. To see any of it covered by you is a treat. I'm tuned in to all the podcasts and journalists, but I love your take on the legal side of things. I'd love to know more about the fuckery with the coroner. Not to mention the boating accident (which was a huge story around here in itself when it happened).
Wow, this is absolutely unbelievable ‼️🤯 Thank you Emily for breaking this down for us💜
Please do a full breakdown of these indictments I am so interested in this crazy case or cases

The docuseries was excellent
This case is like the Energizer Bunny. It just keeps going…and going…and going…😳 Dominoes are a good analogy. This is a line of dominoes that evolved into a giant pattern of dominoes. When will it reach the end, I wonder.
I became aware of this case after the death of the wife and son and was aware of some of the other details, but gladly appreciated your previous video with the timeline of events. I just watched it prior to this update. Thank you Emily.
Finally watching this after the 6th week of the trial when then defense rested.
Oh man... this trial is wild.
