  • www.crosstraini... Beta main bearing failures are now a small but significant issue. See this vid: • Beta's response to mai... A compact review of where Beta is heading lately. When I talk about known issues on any bike, there are always guys who freak out and say that bike sounds like a pile of shit, no way I'm buying that! Well, don't watch the Beta enduro review known issues and common problems vid if you are a panic merchant. You can make a comprehensive list of small issues with any brand like Beta. Like any brand, the Italian bikes have their niggling little faults and I covered these way back in 2015 in a Beta review. The good news? They have fixed quite a few. The bad news? There are a few things they keep ignoring... and some new issues with our bike reviews on the Beta Xtrainer, RR300 and RR390.
    Let's start with the good news for Beta. The mudflap for the rear shock used to slowly wear away the swingarm, now it's reshaped to avoid this. If you have an earlier model just trim it to suit. There were occasional false neutrals between some gears, a new gear selector on 2018 models has fixed this. Beta plastics were very prone to cracking instead of bending in even small accidents or just leaning your fenders against a tree. It's early days, but our experience with the 2018 models suggests they finally got around to using the nice flexible materials everyone else uses. After several years of riders saying Beta enduro seats feel like slabs of concrete, the 2018 models finally have a softer foam.... good news if you do like to sit a lot on bikes like the Beta 2018 RR300 or RR250.

    One area we felt Beta let themselves down with Beta known issues and common problems was the heavy clutch. It wasn't bad compared to say cable clutches, but by European standards it wasn't good. The 2018 model is a big improvement. We've done a vid on clutch mods if you have an earlier model.
    Okay. So are the Beta 2018 known issues and common problems? This includes the RR350, RR390, RR430 and RR480 and two stroke models too. Europeans could still learn a lot from the Japanese about good electrics. It's a good idea to remove your headlight and fuel tank then use a pile of zip ties to get your wiring loom neat and not rubbing on anything. There is a critical electrical connection which is easily corroded and can shut down the oil injection system. Apparently it's been fixed for 2018, but some 2017 and all earlier models had the capacitor and diode block mounted upside down allowing water to enter heat shrink. The wires going into the magneto can be snagged by sticks when riding. On 2018 models these are secured better but still it can still happen.
    Also the positive wire from starter to the solenoid runs over the frame backbone above the rear shock. Reroute under the backbone to avoid the tank rubbing the wire... some dealers fix this in pre-delivery. More 2018 Beta known issues and common problems? The four stroke model RR350, RR390, RR430 and RR480 still use plastic cogs for the oil pump. These need to be replaced every 100 hours but most riders agree it would just be easier to make these steel. You can buy aftermarket steel cogs from Boano in Italy.
    The standard coolant has too much glyco-*
    The two stroke oil injection system works great for most riders, however there's a small but noticeable number of issues with bikes running too rich and fouling plugs. This is because the system defaults to something around 20:1 to avoid any engine seizures but of course it can foul plugs. Apparently the majority of cases are debris left in the system at the factory and a bit of carb cleaner will fix it. But if you can get some compressed air through it will be even better. Remember to always top up your oil. If your system stuffs up and defaults to the very rich mix it could be possible to drain your oil tank on a long ride if it wasn't full. Some riders are simply removing the system with parts from Beta that cost around $70. Debris sometimes gets caught internally in the two ball valves of the internal solenoid during manufacturing, resulting in over oiling.
    A small but persistent Beta known issue and common problem is that pointy-ended sidestand that just sinks into soft ground. The crazy thing is the 2012 sidestand base was double the size and worked great. Why did Beta go back to the chopstick design. Who knows.

    UPDATE: MAIN BEARING FAILURES 2018, 2019 2020 2021 BETA TWO STROKES
    Unfortunately there been main bearing failures in late model Beta two strokes. Beta head office have never been clear about the exact cause. After being pressured, they said it was an 'assembly problem'. Months later they changed their story to it being a 'supplier problem' and they were given incorrect bearings. I've checked again and according to a distributor it's back to being 'an assembly problem' as they were heating the engine cases incorrectly, causing them to warp. This would explain why some riders are having two or even three bearings fail in a row. Get your engine case checked and replaced if needed! Beta has advised a 5% failure rate initially, later Beta USA said as high as 10%. The rate did drop in 2020 models. Thankfully we've only had a very small number of 2021 cases reported.

    I have purchased 3 Beta 300s since 2015, a Race Ed, a Standard, and a Xtrainer. I still own all 3.
    They all had too tight of drive chains, loose battery terminals, and various fasteners that were loose. After I went over everything and tightened things up and loosened the drive chains, these bike have been fantastic.

      Not trying to be argumentative, but aren't those issues related to assembly at the shop you're buying it from? Chains and batteries don't come out of the crate ready to ride.

      an interesting point, jeff. all the dealers normally do is cut some zip ties, put the battery in and that's about it. but the good dealers do go over the bike and check for the common things the factory can miss.

      @@819jt A good PDI is a wonderful thing. I agree, as a sales rep for an equipment company and the biggest issues my dealers face is themselves. My successful dealers cover their butts with a good initial PDI, the unit goes out and runs well and if there are manufacturing defects they are handled accordingly. The less successful dealers immediately throw the supplier under the bus when a PDI is poor or non existent after charging the customer for it on his bill of sale. This is what I call shooting holes in the bottom of the boat you are sitting in.

      some dealers do jeff, some don't. i won't necessarily say dealers are being slack if they don't, the profit margin is pretty slim on dirt bikes as it is and i'd tend to put the responsibility back more on the factory....

    • @painmagnet1
      @painmagnet1 5 років тому

      Your dealer isn't going to disassemble the bike and put it back together again without an extremely hefty charge. They uncrate, put the bars on and full with fluids, that's pretty much it. And that's all they SHOULD need to do. It takes virtually no extra work for the factory to put a bike together properly than to do it sloppily.

      The left side of the expansion chamber of my 2011 300 ec would bend in towards the bike a bit after the first stack.. after that you can stack it as many times you want.. never leak emissions or change performance. Vibrations was more than ktm.. probly the only cons I had with the bike.. but U can relay on that front end on any given situation more than my old ktms (2000-2006 exc and SX 2 stroke)

      I’ve put about 20 hours on my ‘18 XC300 since buying it new. I haven’t had a single mechanical issue with it. No loose bolts/bad connections etc. very good fit and finish. The Torrot buyout has done a lot for QC when looking at older GG bikes. Only complaints I have is that it’s a bit taller than most competitive bikes with me being only 5’9” and the stock battery can’t quite get the engine running when it’s hot and in gear when the clutch is pulled in. However, most of my riding on it has been done in below freezing temps, so that may change when spring comes around for us. Also, swap out the factory trans fill/drain plugs for hex bolts. The stock Allen key bolts are very soft aluminu and have a penchant for rounding off if you aren’t careful tightening.

    As someone who was previously a mechanic who worked on both Italian and English cars, absolutely love the wiring diagram - far more accurate than the factory ones, if you can even get to the disused lavatory with the sign on the door that says beware of the leopard....
    Interesting that I've been hearing from a few different directions that Beta have slipped rather a lot, a mate has a few friends who do Romaniacs among other things, and they dumped the Betas for reasons of reliability and parts availability/pricing (eventually, they apparently struggled to even find buyers for them). A little disappointing too, as I had some interest in converting over to a 250RR if something serious happened to my Kato.
    That said, another of his mates bought a TPI, and doesn't even want to sit on it anymore - he reckons any time he gets into the real hard technical stuff the thing overheats and craps out in various ways. Made my mate very happy with his choice to stick with carby on his 2018 300EXC, which he hasn't had any trouble with, despite smashing it around at Wildwood among other places...
    Always luck of the draw, but in Australia at least, for me maintaining my own bikes, Gas Gas and apparently now Beta are most let down by parts availability. Failures are always compounded in magnitude in peoples minds if they're having to wait to weeks for parts... Whereas KTM you can jump on almost any dealers website, click through the parts diagrams, find the part you need, how many they've got (if none, whether there's any in stock in Australia), and how much it is - and then get it sent to your door in a couple of days.
    Some stuff is stupidly priced, but a lot of it is very competitive with aftermarket in my experience - indeed, KTM Powerparts can sometimes be cheaper for the exact same item. From memory last time I bought a rear sprocket the KTM Powerpart branded Supersprox Stealth was actually notably cheaper than buying the Supersprox stealth from MXstore or anywhere else. That's changed a little now, as they now have their own exclusive version made for Powerparts, still by Supersprox (2k) and same construction, but slightly different design - and it's slightly cheaper than the Stealth.
    And if that fails you, the sheer volume of KTMs sold mean there is aftermarket alternatives for pretty much everything, sitting on the shelf at most good retailers....

    18 GasGas ec300 has been an awesome bike for me. Been 100% happy with it...Owned for almost a year with no issues. Only problem was factory jetting was really rich. Installed a Lectron carb out of curiosity even though I had got jetting dialed in.

      Sorry for the slow reply....
      It’s a very linear power. Didn’t give the bike more power, but it also didn’t get any weaker. Hard to explain in writing... lol. Me, and my brother feel it’s made sketchy rough terrain a little easier to navigate now that the power delivery is really linear.
      Big plus is extreme elevation, and temperature changes do not effect power at all. I’m overly picky about jetting being spot on though.

      I have a 2018 that came with a bad ecu that had to be replaced...this had the check engine lit until I replaced it. It was using a lot of oil and smoking a lot and fouling plugs until we swapped the ECU. Then the light came back on a couple of months later. The culprit was a broken wire to the oil pump. I probably damaged it trying to fit the air filter so watch out for that too.

My 2015 300RR had various fasteners loose, stripped radiator mounting bolts and very little poor quality grease in the bearings. Easily fixed, but still... excellent parts put together badly. It seems as though they have kids doing final assembly. My new leftover 2018 500 RR-S seems exactly the same, poor assembly. Good informative vid Barry. I'll be honest, your praises of the Beta lead me to purchase a 2018 390RRs. Sure, some nuts and bolts fell off after a couple of hours, the thermostat malfunctioned and caused a coolant volcano that almost melted my boot, the horn ( which is stupid anyway) fried and died, and oil drips out of the bottom of the case at a rate of 3-6 drops a week. Oh well, 1st world problems. It's an Italian bike that for the most part runs like a champ! I can't tell you how much that bike, combined with your dodgy vids, have improved my riding skills. Beta has fixed all the issues that have popped up without any hesitation. Tomorrow they are putting a replacement motor (slightly used) in to resolve the oil leak. Apparently there are a few dozen bad 390RRs engines floating around out there on their own personal oil slick caused by a hiccup in the machining of the side cases. Would I buy a Beta again? Yes I would. Sometimes the company behind the machine is as important as the machine between your legs.

    Nice to hear honest thoughts Barry. I hear the local distribution change for the brand has also left a sour taste in many local dealer's mouths, in particular, their choice to air freight parts on order rather than stock them here in a warehouse. Very unfortunate indeed. Hopefully things will improve on both fronts and the Betas will continue to sell well. I'm told they are quite big in the US, much more so than here in Aus.
    I have a Sherco, and do videos on those, as well as our rides. I try to give out similar honest info with those as well. There have been a couple of faults, nothing as nasty as needing new forks thankfully, but I list them as I'm aware of them.
    There was an issue with the 2t bendix gear, but a fix was applied and the replacement part is often given to the customer free of charge outside of warranty.
    Ive just renewed my 300 4t, my previous one was going great at 120hrs. I did have a failed $27 coolant sensor and a broken shifter centring spring, both of which were in stock in Australia when I needed them.
    In summary, it's not so much the issues people have, it's how they are resolved and whether the parts are available at the time.

Upon getting my bike home and going through a thorough check ( which I feel is mandatory on any bike purchase) I found the swingarm bolt was missing it's nut. An email on a Friday night to Beta USA got a reply by one of the head dudes Saturday morning, phone call I might add.
    They were very apologetic and rushed the missing nut to me.

    • @EvilGTV
      @EvilGTV 5 років тому +2

      I would definitely agree with being a total pain to work on if we're talking 2011 vintage! Mate has an EC250 in that year, and compared to working on my 2011 250exc, they're just incredibly frustrating and illogically designed. Adjusting the power valve requires removing the entire side casing, and bending a crappy sloppy spring trying to maintain clearance to an awkwardly shaped hole in the casing- wtf? Ktm takes 3 small bolts to remove the small alloy cover, and then there is a jam nut on the ball jointed linkage that allows you to adjust it precisely and in seconds.
      And when I looked at doing either linkage or swingarm bearings (can't remember which was the issue now), as far as I could tell I needed to remove the engine to get the bloody thing out? Where I had the entire KTM swingarm lying on the ground in a lazy 20 minutes.
      That Gas Gas is a nice enough bike to ride, stable front end, low seat height, good broad power (although this one appears to have an oval bored carby, corrected squish and an intake manifold built up with epoxy, someone has spent some time on this thing at some point I think, so maybe not always the case), and the 'rain mode' switch has quite a noticeable effect. Perfect for my mate who had no real riding experience, (especially as it was fairly sluggish when we got it compared to what it ended up when I fixed a few issues and changed the sprockets over). The seat is an awesome shape for motocross style sit down cornering, you just naturally fall into the front of it. The gear ratio spacing annoys me though vs my Kato though, and I tend to prefer the lively front end of the Kato, just feels more agile and maneuverable - maybe I'm just a sucker for machines that try to kill me. I can certainly understand why someone would prefer the gasser.
      Certainly would hope they've taken some lessons from KTM with respect to making them easier to pull apart in the newer models though, that and fit/finish of parts are where the KTM kills it (stuff like as-cast hubs on the Gasser vs machined hubs on the KTM, and a very agricultural looking swingarm come to mind. Functional, but unrefined)

    In the US, the 2018 Betas were roughly $1000 cheaper than the 2019s. A local shop has a leftover 2018 250rr for $7400. 2019 is $8800. 2019 KTM xc-w 2ts are roughly $9800. I guess they're still somewhat of a bargain. My 2018 250rr has been mostly trouble free. The throttle cable got pinched between the cylinder head brace and the frame, causing it to stick wide open. Non existent headset, swingarm, and suspension linkage grease. My shift lever will not stay tight. I even replaced the shift lever, but I suspect the shift shaft is somehow out of spec. Water pretty much pours into the flywheel cover. The clutch is toast after 65 hours and needs plates. That might be an ok life span, but all my other bikes have gone 100 hours or longer. Maybe I abused this one more since it's a 250. Factory plates cost a fortune and we can't get aftermarket plates for it in the US yet. Float level was way off from the factory. And the spec for chain tension in the manual is way too tight. If you tighten the chain to spec, and crank the swingarm down to parallel with the countershaft sprocket, you'll break something.
    Other than that, it's been great, especially for the amount of abuse I've given it. Much less work getting it "right" than my old carbureted aluminum framed WR450. :)

      bummer on the clutch david, that doesn't sound normal. tim coleman abuses his constantly and has never had to replace plates despite clocking up so many hours each year. the float level is the same when they use that carb in KTMs too, crazy that they don't fix it after all these years.

      Thanks for the info Barry. I had a hard time finding friction discs but finally found some. Seems the 2018 discs are scarce. I'm going to replace the steel discs too. I'll check everything out really well and make sure nothing is sticking. It always felt ok, but the clutch did squeal a bit at times. Somebody suggested that the master cylinder could be too full of fluid. When the fluid gets hot, it can expand and have no air gap to compress into thus releasing the clutch slightly leading to slippage when hot.

    • @enablerdave
      @enablerdave 5 років тому

      And, the discs I "found" are not available. Not in stock and on permanent backorder. No ETA. I can't find any clutch discs for my bike. The consensus from a Beta dealer I found is that the new style 2018 baskets starve the clutch for oil. Apparently they're experimenting with a new basket that feeds more oil to the plates to help longevity... aka rekluse. Chapped with Beta right now!!!

    • @enablerdave
      @enablerdave 5 років тому

      Just thought I'd update this. I discovered that my master cylinder didn't have enough of an air gap in it. As the clutch wore down, the fluid needed more room to expand into the master cylinder. It didn't have that room. So the clutch would hang open. Removing some fluid from the master cylinder fixed it. Tim from BetaUSA was a great help and even offered to cover the parts under warranty. But since my discs are still within service specs I turned him down. Excellent support even though the parts were temporarily unavailable.

    I don't know if Beta is losing its shine or if they already did. In Jan, 2018 I bought a new 390RR-S partly because of their claim of "rideability", partly on your positive review, partly because they were $1K less than KTM/Husky and partly because my experience with WP suspension is that it is JUNK. (KTM/Husky fanboys, feel free to attack!)At 325 miles I happened to notice that if I let the engine idle for a couple minutes and then blipped the throttle, the exhaust produced a cloud of smoke rivaling a 2-stroke. At 420 miles, Beta approved the replacement of the rings as a act of "goodwill". I was quick to point out that the bike was only a couple months old and way under warranty. This did not solve the problem.My dealer continued to work with me and Beta USA for a resolution of this problem.A couple months later I was informed that the Beta factory in Italy had discovered a batch of cylinders which were "defective" and thought I may have gotten one of them. At 740 miles Beta USA sent a truck to pick up my bike from the dealer and take it to their headquarters where they replaced the cylinder, piston, rings and valve seals. But wait, there's more!This time as an act of goodwill, not to mention good PR, they also returned my bike with the following: New plastics and graphics, new tires, new air filter, aftermarket turn signals, clutch slave cylinder guard and license plate bracket and while it's hard to tell, quite possibly a new chain. There were also some other minor mods.While the problem has been significantly reduced, I still believe the engine shouldn't smoke and use as much oil as it does.

While it's not 2-stroke in nature any more, it's a lot more than I've experienced with Japanese 4-strokes. As such, I'm not really sure as to what's considered "normal" for Beta's. GasGas has been growing around here similar to the way Beta has been over the past few years. Lots of very happy owners, and if any of them lets me try theirs out I might be replacing my KTM 200 with one soon...
    They had year end rebates of $800 at the end of 2018, and the new EC ranger range should be able to get you out the door for YZ250X prices... this is for a bike with KYB suspension, 6 gears, e-start, and a hydraulic clutch.

      i know the best dealers try to fix what they can, but any decent factory should be able to get their workers to torque bolts correctly and make sure they haven't left parts out. sounds like you got a later 2018 model if your fork anodizing lasted okay. some guys were finding fork oil turned to sludge after only five to 10 hours riding.

After spending 250 US dollars and having them anodized I haven't had a single issue with the bike and its over 300 hours now. My new KTM 250xc,with missing pv cover bolts, warped reed petals and useless mikuni cost alot more. Fortunately it's now someone else's problem. My new 19 300 race ed I initially cried shit anodizing again, but hopefully it was just a case of sloppy processing during anodizing. Time will tell.
