Great video. Very helpful. Trying hard to master oils. One of the problems I have is not knowing which coloured oil(s) to use on each of the differing base colours. I recently purchased the AK 'Mastering Oils' book, which didn't help with this to be honest. The other problem I have is that I never know the best order for the weathering process. e.g. Panel line wash, multi-tonal treatment (as AK call it!), filters, stains and chipping. It's a minefield! Anyway, I'll try the chipping first next time, instead of last. I have this kit in the stash, so I'll subscribe, follow along and have a go. PS. I have found the Abteilung white very difficult to remove in the past and now only use it for mixing. All that said, I think your Dornier looks terrific. Super job!
The white dot oil paint weatheing looks great, an idea perhaps for the matt black sections on my current build of a1/72 Stirling Bomber. Want that worn, weathered look. We're the oils on top of a gloss or Saturn coat 🤔
Bryan, thank you for tuning in!!! Yes, I think it's better to apply them a little bit more excessive, you can put oils as a filter over it to tone it down. Glad you like it...
Great work! If I may give you some advice... I've been using simillar methods with oils on flat surface. One thing I've learned with oil dots is: 1. White is too stark and really hard to blend properly. 2. Moist the surface with oil thinner just before applying the dots. I mist the thinner with the airbrush and then aply dots in small sections.

Nice technique on the pencil weathering. At 3:51, before you start on the oil weathering, did you add a top coat over to protect the pencil weathering first ?

The dot matrix works on tanks, obviously does well on aircraft, dont3 know that I'd try it on 1/72. But as of today I'm building the single seat version. So thought I'd check out your videos, I'm pulling out my reference material from the 70s in blk & wht, not sure of wheel or bomb bay colors most late war were bare metal but prototypes sometimes had at least 02 grey primer.
Hey John! I hope you can use some techniques shown in the videos for your build! In 1/72 I don't know, if it'll work. Perhaps with very small oil dots... I was approached by several history buffs about the colors, some say it's bare metal, some agree with a 02. I chose which of these options fit better to the model :) Have fun!!!
@@AirandGroundinScale Doing the Tamyia 1/48 scale, my prefered scale. 1/72 scale is tough for weathering light washes bring out panel lines but chipping etc is tough with my old eyes.

I found You as one of the best UA-cam modellers. Great technique! I must check at least some of that pencils. Also, I must check 502 Abteilung oils, looks working better than Oilbrushers used by me. ;) All the best for You! ;)

Have a pretty matt (AMIG Matt Lucky Varnish) on it, but i have no chance with the pencils on it. Only wet, but then as you said it creates large dots. Do you think the Mission Models flat coat the best for the pencils? Thanks for your support my friend, can really learn so much from your awesome movies
Hey Markus, wie geits Dir? I also had the issue with the weathering pencils, that the pigments didn't grip very well on the surface. Sometimes it worked better, when I sharpened the pencil a bit... The Prismacolor worked much better on the same surface... It's time to get the next series started :) I hope I got some more time for the hobby in the future! Markus, thank you for your motivation!!!

Really nice clean work and spot on video footage. I would recommend trying bigger brush if you want to blur oils quicker, it simply has more hair. Check out one of Doog Models weathering videos how he does that. Also you might want to try watering pencils and use sponge to add colorful chips, just another technique worth checking. Keep it up!
It's a little bit of work to finish my videos, much appreciated that you like it!!! Doog has a great range of techniques, I really like his videos!!! How do you mean watering the pencils? @@AirandGroundinScale simply dip end of pencil in water so it's wet...then you can write with it on some surface to get wet paint from it...then you dip sponge in it and there you go :)
That AK pencil set looks pretty sweet, but how do they compare to the Prismacolor? I know Prisma's have a velvety feel on application and layer really well. I now see why you were concerned over the matt varnish you used. In terms of strategy, I think you could break this down to 2 levels. One level for application of the weathering pencils on the matt surface, then a second level of oils on a gloss surface. It allow you to add further depth, but also let you correct any errors that you make on first step without affecting the second. Another great episode Leon! I check everyday on FB and Insta for your new content (yes, I am BushyM). I have not checked Instagram for years until I found your channel, just so I can follow your progress and support you. Keep up the inspiring work! :-)
The AK pencil have even more a velvety feel... I'll try some different brands in the future, but I really like the colorrange from AK. A good thing is, that the pencil-work doesn't get affected by the oil colors and thinners. Yes you're right about the second level, but I'll try a semi gloss, or the oil colors have no surface to hold on to. But for a wash with oil colors the glossy surface is perfect! Matt, you're a true follower, thank you so much!!! I try to put more and more online but the maintain a certain level... This episode delayed a little bit and I can't manage to have a fix publishing day. So I'll write you a notice, the next time I'll put something online so you can check it out? Deal? :)

Hallo Air and Ground. Ich baue im moment die Mirage III RS der Staffel 10 / Mata Hari. Habe soeben die Camouflage aufgetragen mit airbrush. Habe die Humbrol Acrylic verwendet. Nun werde ich ein Clear Gloss Varnish auftragen und danach mache ich mich ans Decal anbringen und ans erste weathering. Hast Du ein tip wie ich schöne streakes und konturen um die panels kriege? Eignen sich ölfarben von Abteilung um diese auf dem Klarlack anzubringen? Danach habe ich vor ein matt lack zum finsih aufzutragen....Sorry bin Neuling :-) Any tips oder Aenderungvorschläge zum Vorgehen ? Viele dank und en Gruess:-) geliked und subscribed:-)

Sehr schönes Model, habe ich noch nie gebaut, habe aber eines auf Lager :) Ich würde Dir empfehlen auf einem Gloss Varnish die Decals aufzutragen und auch einen Panellinewash aufzutragen. Diesen kannst Du entweder mit bereits fertigen Produkten oder auch selber aus Öl-Farben mixen. Danach, wenn du weiteres Weathering machen willst, würde ich dir empfehlen einen Matt oder Semi-Matt-Lack aufzutragen, damit Du besser mit den Öl-Farben arbeiten kannst. Auf dem Gloss wischst Du sie immer gleich wieder weg... Einfach ausprobieren... Je matter die Oberfläche ist, umso mehr Verdünner benötigst Du um die Öl-Farben zu verwischen. Wünsche Dir ä guetä Wuchestart!!!

Ooohhh... An all black nightfighter, I want to try this too :) Yes I would recommend a greyish-blue for superficial chips and silver for the deeper ones... If you can, post a picture of your work on the Facebookpage of this channel!

Happen to me, dots after applying oils over flat surface. So now I apply over gloss and works perfect.

That was great oil wash. Mix my own wash Thin to Thick.
I strugle sometimes too, to get the right consistency. In my opinion it depends too on the oil color brand and color itself...

So to do the chipping and random specks, did you always wet the pencil or only at times? Great vid!
