I remember riding in those old cabovers with my dad back in the 60's and 70's.Rough riding and vibrating.Hit a pot hole and it sounds like the whole dash was gonna bust.Upholstery screws forever backing themselves out.I wouldn't trade those memories for the world though.
Of all the tractors that I drove in my 30 years on the road, the Freightliner COE was my favorite tractor. I was at home in a Freightliner, something that I never felt is any other tractor I drove and I drove a lot of different COE's and conventional tractors. I'm retired now (going on 14 years now) but I do miss my Freightliner COE's.
This brings back memories, I used to work at the freightliner plant on Swan Island, Portland. And I did work on some of those Max Cab overs , they had 4308 Cats and a Detroit but I can’t remember much. They needed a bigger radiator for those big horsepower engines
Man, I remeber when I was about 10 I had a brochure fro the "New Freightliner Powerliner" , I think about 1977, 78. I wore that thing out drooling over it dreaming about all the miles I would put on it haulin' cows all over the world and to Hawaaii across that bridge that was yet to be built!
Started out in a condo freightliner Cabover right near the end of the cabover era. Occasionally I'll see one cruising down the road and think about finding one, then I remember that my back no longer aches because I wasn't sitting on top of the steer axle and I come to my senses.
Why can't I find any video's with the 1970's conventional freightliners? Are they that rare? The late 70's conventionals are my favorite trucks ever. Thank God I have an original dealer brochure of the 79 conventionals!
@1968spawn , I believe frieghtliner made thier first conventional in 1974. {excuse me white-frieghtliner}. Ive done a little research because they were kinda a mystery to me as well to when they were made.
I would love if the old big rigs, like the Flxible and GMC Old/New Looks, had a 2-speed Allison automatic transmission, with a floor-mounted shifter, that had F N R a la the Old Look/Fishbowl generations of buses. Clutches and manauls suck. THANK YOU....!
At 2:46. What is the difference with the wider grill and larger windshield than the other cabovers? I never really got the lower drop windshields though. The GMC Astros sucked because another driver comin at you could see you scratching your balls. These Frieghtshakers were just as bad. This model didn't last long though. Bigger grill and radiator doesn't mean a cooler engine.
Ya just gotta love the heartpoundin drum they add when he's talking about the thing in his cigarette pack. But a big black(?) pill? What kinda gear is that?
Benzadrine =speed; doctors used to prescribe them as diet pills we called um pocketrockets or black beauties .. no drug testing in those days. you could truck for days you had better run two log books to cover your ass...

Cabover semi trucks are rare nowadays.

People can hate and talk shit all they want about Freightliner but I still say they're the best on the road.
Yeah! During the all toobrief CB radio fad, in 1977, I rode in na thirteen speed W/F COE.
Freightliners are my favorite cabover. And also did you know Freightliner didn't make conventionals until the mid 70s?
And you could still buy a Freightliner Argosy here for use in the US until recently.
Awesome video, and excellent song to go along with it.
