This is the first song that got me hooked on Ms. Apple.. I was so enamored by how esoteric her music sounded and her deep vocal delivery and how her lyrics cut deep... just how everything came together so cleverly. I like both versions but the leaked Extraordinary Machine album will always be art in it's rawest form.
Some of the officially released songs sound ok to me, they have grown on me I guess. however, I’ll never be convinced this or Tymps is not better on the unreleased version. These are SO much better.
It was fionas decision to start the album again fresh, i have proof look up the interview with her on itunes originals, she talks about how she liked these songs but she wanted a different sound. I know what you mean though most of these are way better than the released especially not about love.
I was listening to this unreleased version of this record when it came into my life back in 2005 or 2006 and I SO prefer it to the official album. When you polish something too much, it wears off the finish. I love how raw this is. I feel like this may have been more what Fiona intended it to sound like. To me this is clearly more of an artist’s expression and the other is more commercialized. I wish someone would write a play and use this to make it a musical. It belongs in a black box theatre.
Funny because fiona didn't like this version because it wasn't authentic to her.. clearly you have fallen into liking the commercial version of fionas artistic vision (the final on the album) isn't it ironic 🤣
Thanks for all the unreleased versions of Fiona Apple songs, Spiddi! :-) Some I like better than the released versions.. Others, like this one, not quite so much... But she rocks nonetheless. I listen to her heaps; especially when I miss my friend who passed away unexpectedly in 2009. She had a similar energy and often spoke in a stentorian voice.
Listening through the playlist, it's interesting to hear the difference, how theatrical it is, but it's not very suited to her vocals or in line with her other work. I think the released version of the album connects well with The Idler Wheel, one can hear the natural progression.
Much better than the released version .. her vocals, for example, are more 'upfront' and she sounds like she's enjoying singing the song; as opposed to the released version that sounds more like something she had to do.
This sounds like a karaoke version of the released. I'm reminded of the Mickey Mousecapade video game. The Elizondo production added that atmosphere of danger and charge that reflects the psychotic lyrics
I think the unreleased album has too many random sounds and such, it really felt like brion was influencing it more than fiona, and I love fiona so much, so I prefer the released.
@castorat agreed. fiona should just ditch sony, im very sure there are other record labels who would absolutely love to have her, and then re-release " extraordinary machine " in its original form ... and keep putting out all the wonderful music she makes ...
Hm. Interesting. See how it does or doesn't influence the dynamics if you have a steady, continous climpering connecting the song into a steady buildup instead of having the bits of text as 'islands'. In the end, I think the original version ultimately brings out more emotion/energy in every line, but this one is not bad/interesting too.
KendrixTermina This one actually IS the original. It was recorded in 2002. It was re-recorded during 2003/2004 for the official album release. However, I do agree with you.
I think most agree that Extr. M mark one is vastly, vastly superior. Not that it matters much in the case of this song which didn't change much between versions - and... with a lyric like this she should logically have doomed herself to a life of chastity ever after !
Idk when I was 14 I did really preferred the unreleased versions more but the final cut definitely has aged wayyyyyy better than this. This sounds like a demo, which totally fine but I can see Fiona’s point about reworking the songs. The tune doesn’t match the lyrics

Me too. I loved the ambiguous lyrics.
Do you have any idea who the song is about?
@@stephenhogg6154 it's about many of fiona's exes
@@desireandfire That's true, but she seems to be singling one out. David Blane? Paul Thomas Anderson?
@@stephenhogg6154 Probably Paul or her ex-husband Lionel
With this song, the unreleased is more upbeat and jazzy. The official one is the more haunting Fiona. At least what I hear.
I absolute love this unreleased version. So glad I came across it. ❤️⭐
i cannot compare this to the released version they evoke the same exact thing in different ways. how tf does fiona do this???
Thanks for uploading all these unreleased cuts. Love Fiona and weird that I hadn't sought them out earlier! Diggin it.

4 people didn't get him back.

Me too. It was available online before the album came out. I loved it, then felt slightly underwhelmed by the official album.
I actually prefer many of the unreleased versions more than the official Album versions. This one being my favorite.

brings me back woah such a great musical creation to experience growing up and living as it was released.

feels kinda surf-ey.. love both versions of the album but the unreleased material speaks to me more...
this is the one i heard first x). i like it better!

Lighthouse Club Penguin sample in the back. Remember from the beginning, I'm not crazy, grow up.
Ive always loved this album GOD this song is so... You guys know... I'll shut up.
austinpowers-y
it's groovy
This is better than the released version. It’s more quirky.
totally agree, the unreleased is much much better !
I love Fiona so much but extraordinary machine is that one album I really don’t enjoy but the demos of it really are a treat.
This sounds like a karaoke version of the released. I'm reminded of the Mickey Mousecapade video game. The Elizondo production added that atmosphere of danger and charge that reflects the psychotic lyrics
@Phazonin amen to that !
I'm sorry to say it, but the melody of this version reminds me of an '80s workout video. I prefer the official version, but I love Fi either way :)
Selly Heart I thought I would love this but I hate it. It sounds so cheesy
@AndyWitmyer No. I love the wierd little quirky noises this one makes. I will say I like the released version of Better Version of Me tho
Love this. I cannot stand the released version. So much so that I won the record from the radio when it came out and fucking broke that shit in half.
I LOVE this version the album version feels overproduced I have A copy of the unreleased album and prefer it 100%

why sony didn't want to release her album? at first?
Ale de la O Cause Sony sucks and clearly don't get Fiona ....

seedling
I like the other version better with the Grand Piano sound, it's funkier.
the instrumental of this release sounds like super mario bros 3
Does anyone know if the released version is on youtube?
*with
i thinks i like this one better!!!!
Boo, sir. Boo.
