Why is this Thiruvananthapuram eatery without a signboard so popular? | The Hindu

- The busy Karamana junction, one of the gateways into the city of Thiruvananthapuram. Ask any one in Karamana for Thampi Annan's Kada and they will direct you to the place.
This eatery, now over 70 years old, is a nondescript, no-frills joint without a neon signboard, or for that matter, any kind of signboard. This joint is as busy as the junction where it is located, from 5 in the morning, till 10 at night.
Here, the kitchen never closes. The cooks and their helpers work in shifts to ensure that they open for the early risers and those who come to the city for work.
By 7 AM, the place is filled with busy commuters on their way to work.
So, why is this breakfast joint so popular?

God bless such honest and good people. May the tribe increase.
That place don't have to have a name to make the bystanders know what treasure lies inside it and that's what makes it more special.
Homely Local food at affordable price is what makes this place ppl's favourite.
Served on Banana leaf 👍🏽👍🏽
No sunthetic flavour enhancers , food colours. Good place for regular customers. Not for ones seeking a relaxing ambience
Serving food to the hungry at all times is a joyous and pious work.
Tambi Annan itself is a brand. Without any promo. Only the product served with emotion and flavour of love.

They don’t need a signboard to be well known. The food speaks for themselves.
My favt spot...Thampis restaurant Karamama Tvm...Have been going for the last 16+ years.
Even my parents have been visiting this place for decades
Incredible India!!
The Hindu, your videos very useful for new English learners .Subtitles very useful
No show off Generations change But Ethincity Continues
No Digital Marketing, No Adv, No Fancy Name, Menu or Interiors but Still famous in City. Its a business model to study for sure.
Keralites are sooo literate that they can even read invisible boards
Good one 😂
Liked it 😂😂
Well to be honest many shops till the 90s did not have nameboards not just in kerala but other states as well. The shop was generally known after the person running it. "lakshmana Kadda" "Dutta stores" "Lalram dukhaan".
No wonder our ecomony didn't grew as people were sooo stagnant
@@flyingdragon6275 what'd does this have to do with economy??🙄
@@flyingdragon6275 Our economy didn't grow because it was a closed one.
God bless you and your family. Proud to be a Malayalee and Proud to say, we are hard working people
But it's a Tamilian shop. You should be proud to be a Tamilian
I am a tamil "Marumagal" 😁
@@puneethjoseph9585 where do they mention in the video that it's a tamilian's shop? Infact, the names of the current owner and his grandfather sound a lot like malayali names.
Excellent. Good food without pretensions like keralites.
My favorite South Indian food:
Pulyogare
Tomato rice
Rice with spicy tomato curry/chutney
Sambar and tomato rasam with Rice
Curd Rice
Idli and medu vada
The Thali on banana leaf
Ragi Ball
Visit Karnataka, this isn't your place 😁👍🏼
Must try Kerala Porotta & Beef fry 😋 very delicious 😋😋
@@harikrishnankg77 True Beef and Porotta 😋
My favourite food is Appam and duck egg roast from Thampi Annan's kada year's back👍
Voice over bring smiles puttu 🤗
I've special liking for their `Kattaan Chaai' and `Puttu' prepared using Bamboo.
Quality doesn't need any publicity...
My favorite kada
Had today itself.. 😌
So by law technically there is no such place
No board
No Gumasta licence
No fire dept permission
No fssai certificate
No GSTN on board
So
No Tax 😊
200iq...
Even with all these license n permission, KFC is often caught for rotten stale food.
All these ingredients made the Inflated Economy.
Serving the public @reasonable price.
Also Every Govt Canteen.
Excellent reference
Trivian❤️😍
Yes. I have eaten here.
Altime favourite place 😀😀
Some popular south indian restaurants in the Mumbai suburbs, near railway stations and markets had closed down.
Some new ones appeared when many small offices banks, mobile stores etc opened.
Most discontinued the "thalis" introducing pizzas and Chinese dishes.
Idlis and dosas now have the Schezwan flavour option!
Perhaps the labour for thalis and the need for air-conditioned space influenced the menus!
Hi,
There is a similar thattu kada in Mannamoola peroorkada road near thozhuvancode temple bridge. It has not name but locals know it very well. It gives 7-8 types of chutneys with dosa, idli and omlette.

I can see one sign board "no parking"🚫
Lol🤣
Still someone parked there. That mean sign boards are just useless
Where is this place in Trivandrum?
Karamana
Lol I go here since childhood
What is there to LOL in that?
Could someone share the Google map location pls??
தம்பி அண்ணன் is a catchy name but no sign board 🙂
It's a shop famous among localites
I thought martin's shop ( from Drishyam )
Not so excellent as in the video. I felt the suppliers are rough in behaviour. No price list. Few years back food safety found that their mixers and grinders not cleaned for years as there is no rest for it. Without sign board is against corporation rules and unaccountable.
eatery!
word for desi hotel!
നമ്മളെ തിരോന്തരത്തെ കരമന...💪
Nonveg is not served than what is duck egg?
Is this place without name meant to hide from government to avoid paying tax?
I mean if they haven't caught them in 76 years it's not their problem anymore
Nothing is in name . If you do work people appreciate without name also . 1900
Finally at least someone not selling beef in the name of authentic Kerala food
🙏
Wonder why I've never been. Probably because there is no sign board on it.
When the food is fantastic, no need to advertise!
I see eggs...not a strict vegetarian joint it seems
Horlicks bee!

Egg is still confused where it belongs 😭
Where are vehicles though? Just one bicycle
They have a multilevel parking lot a few meters down the road, aling with an Helipad.
One question. Who eats all those bananas?
what part of pakistan is this ?
This isn't pakistan, Pakistans colony is located down south, it goes by the name of Srilankistan. Do visit them, they serve Genocide in the morning and Chinese leftovers in the night.
Southeast
Its not Dosha... Dosa or dose.

Grassroots excellence
There is no meat though ... Thats the only downside... though they have fish ...
Answer to that question: we indians value food, not decor like the westerners
Its not pure vegetarian.......fish and eggs are served
It's a kerala food culture
Looks like the content you get when you run out of content.
No Meat is served here. Shows an unborn chick( egg)
But egg is there,... they consider egg as veg? 🤨🤨🤨
They said, no meat. Egg is a single cell, not a cluster of muscle fibres.

It's Aappam! Not Appam. That is Rava Kanji not Kanni! Like you pronounced.
In malayalam we pronounce it as appam not aapam.. Aapam is the tamil pronunciation
She also pronounced kanji properly.. Thats the malayalam pronunciation...
@@TheVizkan Ok, we have another dish that we call it as Appam. Our Appam looks more like Sweet Paniyaram.
@@er.esakkim8781 So you decided to go around correcting others without knowing anything about the local dishes ?

Typical kerala food
The amount of carbs in every dish here is insane. It's a death sentence for a diabetic to eat here.
Dude with all due respect I don't think you know anything about the Kerala. And that's why you're saying such statements. As stated earlier in the video the food items given in the restaurant are food items that the people of Kerala usually eat in their homes regularly as part of their staple diet. Plus you forgot about adding one more factor to the carb/weight/healthy lifestyle equation and that is work. Usually most people in Kerala are thin except those who have jobs with more sitting hours which is an increasing phenomenon.
Plus they have pooris made from wheat flour which is totally safe for diabetics to eat.
And for goodness sake this is a restaurant. You're not supposed to be taking your every meal the rest of your life from here. And no one is forcing you.
And once in a while eating those things for a diabetic person who is on medication will not do no harm.
Carbs are not the killer man..over eating is..
@@kuriakosekjoseph6253 I say something, you say something. Proof is testing your blood sugar level after eating. Try it, you will be surprised. India isn't the diabetes capital of the world for nothing.
@@bugged1212 dude eating and having a sedentary lifestyle and just blaming the food is just stupidity. The foods that you saw being served wasn't invented in the last 40 years or so. It has is many hundreds and even thousand years old. Diabetics only started cropping up in the last 2 decades.
And me and my family and all my known family have been eating these foods on a regular basis from the day we were born and nobody got diabetes except a few people and that too they got it in their old age when they started to take other medications and all.
And the thing is this is just rice flour based dishes. So yeah rise in diabetes is due to lifestyle changes. Heck even the international doctors are terming it as a lifestyle disease.
So I think if you don't have any sedentary lifestyle you will be fine.
@@kuriakosekjoseph6253 As I said earlier, test your blood sugar after these food items and see for yourself. Believe in truth and science not in statements. You might actually be correct, but test and see the result for yourself.
No meat is served here 🤯🤯🤯🤯😡
If no meat is served than why not remove eggs too. Not sure why south india has so many non vegetarian people😑
If you are not sure then research.. also food is a choice..just because you are vegetarian does not mean all should be.
South India is south India because in South India there is India
Taje your braminical Patriarchy elsewhere, if you have a problem with south Indians, ask for Partition/ seperation.
Muslims wont like it🤣
Which country is this one plz
OI WHAT GOT TO SEE MY HAND , PAY JUSTIFIED IN MY LEFT HAND
It is dosa not dosha
In kerala, it is pronounced as "Dosha" (ദോശ"), not "Dosa" (ദോസ). The sound "Sha" can be pronounced in two ways.
"Dosha" (ദോശ") means the Dosa food. "Dosha" ("ദോഷ ") means bad :) ( From Sanskrit word Dosha ). So much confusing and complex language.
Idly is prounounced as "Iddali" (ഇഡ്ഡലി). Different states, different varieties of pronunciation. Even the taste is different between Kerala, Tamil and Kannada Dosas. But I love the Dosa ( Dosha ) from all these three states ( Haven't tried in outside of these 3 states )
Its not dosa, its crepe.
What's wrong with The Hindu? You seriously have nothing else to talk about do you?
