UPDATE: As of this moment I highly suggest people use the method where Protontricks is installed via the Discovery store. I have tested this method a few times before uploading this video and it worked on my end. I have seen some people run into issues. Consider checking that one out if you have problems as things are always being updated! ua-cam.com/video/aTDOItcOKoM/v-deo.html
There is a way to install the windows version of mod organizer 2 using the steam ui and proton. Add the installer exe as a non steam game and run it. Then you can run the mod organizer in the steam ui. You still have to manually install mods though unfortunately. Could you look into it and make a tutorial. It would help alot of Linux noobs that suddenly overwhelmed with typing commands in a terminal and it makes more sense to use a windows version to mod a windows version of a game. Thank you for this great video. Looking forward to finally playing modded games on the Steam Deck. One question: won’t system updates overwrite pipx and Python (if we use the second method)?
I'm not 100% sure, I'll try switching to the beta branch and see if they get wiped out I think they'll be okay though. The main thing is that protontricks is fine even if the other two are overwritten. Honestly once you go through this process once you probably don't even need Protontricks anymore as it's just used for the installation process.
Unfortunately, when using this method for Fallout 4, running the game brings up Mo2 and then clicking run, and the nfile>exit, just brings up "Mod organizer is waiting on an application to close before exiting" and then after a very long time, blank screen
As of 2023, this no longer works. For some reason you can follow all of the steps perfectly and get to the stage where your installing Mod Organiser 2, but it will crash at the end and give you an error message. I have tried this method for installing MO2 for both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas but unfortunately it no longer works. Im guessing this is an issue with the latest steam deck firmware or proton tricks no longer working as it should. AN updated guide is needed!
This has been an absolute nightmare that I've been at for hours, very frustrating. Right now when I try downloading MO2 it goes through the full installation in the console then at the very end says "Error check terminal for more details" I've followed everything to an absolute T yet it still isn't working properly. What is the issue here?
It seems the newest version of Protontricks has an issue causing this to happen. If you can use an older version I would try that. If you can't get one you might have to wait.
This guide is incredible. Thank you so much for the work you put into this. I also really like the progress bars for each chapter. Not super necessary, but a very nice touch (on top of actually using chapters!). One quick question. I've read in my research that installing packages won't always be consistent when steam deck updates. I imagine updates won't touch MO2 or the mods themselves since they're in the home folder, but what about pipx, protontricks, etc? Or are those unnecessary once MO2 is installed?
I think they're not necessary once everything is set up. Pipx definitely shouldn't be and I don't think protontricks is either. As soon as a new steam deck update drops though I'll check it out! Luckily even in that case I provide an alternative method for protontricks 🙂
How do you delete Mod Organizer 2 for a clean re-install? I got to a point where there was an error and it has to be totally redone. I cant launch Oblivion anymore.
Warning: Could not find '/home/deck/Downloads/Miniconda3-latest-Linux-x86_64.sh', starting '/bin/bash' instead. Please check your profile settings. This is red text I'm seeing as I'm trying to follow the miniconda steps. The command line is not showing. What did I do wrong?
I figured it out, I was getting the above error by right clicking on the file that had downloaded into the Downloads folder and clicking on Run in Konsole, this produces that error. Do not have the downloaded file from Miniconda selected, right click in the Downloads folder, and select the option Open Terminal. This will then open a console and you can type the commands as shown in the video. For some reason, mine wouldn't auto tab and complete as the video maker has mentioned, I had to type and enter both lines of text in succession and it worked for me. Hope this works for you too
Hi, so when it comes to downloading mods I can't seem to download via MO2. I tried to open it via the .exe file but it doesn't work. It works just fine when I open Skyrim but I cannot get it to actually download mods. What can I do?
Amazing guide! Worked well the first couple play through, but now when Running skyrim in game mode or desktop it opens the Skyrim launcher instead of MO2, anyway I can make it so it opens up mo2 again?
Im having an issue for fallout NV and 4 when i try to install it i get stuck on the "configuring game prefix" ive waited 30+ mins on each install and nothing ever happens, not sure how to fix
playing with proton 6 resulted in the game freezing or audio cutting out whenever an NPC started speaking even without any mods edit: reinstalling the game did nothing
I'm sorry to hear that, try deleting the proton data in the Steam compatdata folder if you know where to find it! I didn't really have problems with my installation.

Is this video still up-to-date? Protontricks doesn't seem to be available on the steam deck anymore... Your comments will be much appreciated, Steel Lodge. Many Thanks.
It should still work, check out to see some of the comments for some advice. My friend did this just about two weeks ago and proton tricks was on the discovery store.
@@SteelLodge Congratulations Steel! A really good video. With your help, I've managed to download and install MO2 on my Steamdeck. In the video, you mentioned you're more familiar with vortex. Now, won't you do the same for Vortex? All the best to you.
Be careful! The mo2 on the SteamOS system is different from the win system mo2 in that it has some bugs and some mods cannot be used on it, especially when you need to integrate many mods.
This whole ordeal is so complicated. After about an hour of trying to get this working I just gave up. If there is some easier way to do this I would love to hear it.
Anyone else getting stuck while MO2 is endlessly “configuring game prefix”? I don’t understand why it won’t go through but it shouldn’t take 2 hours….. am I doing something wrong?
It seems there's an issue with the newest version of protontricks and this. You might be able to download an older version otherwise you will have to wait for an update. This has happened with another version of PT before.
After installing MO2 it works but I dont have F4SE as an option to lunch on MO2 just the regular Fallout 4 .exe, I tried to add F4SE files to FO4 root where the exe is but then MO2 does not work anymore, it seems I have a directory named f4se_0_06_23 on my FO4 root folder with all the script extender files but I cant make MO2 to use those files and I dont know what to do to use the script extender on this game, any advice?
I have only one issue with this video, you didn’t explain where you got that application for x-scheme handler and how we’re supposed to get it, I can’t find it.
Hey any idea why there's an error in the mo2 about the deck's "mouse"? It dubs it invalid and I can't use it at all and trying to press stuff on small screen when everything is small and packed tightly together is an absolute pain in the ass... Any clue how to fix mo2 not reading my mouse imputs?
Unfortunately this is a common steam deck issue, you have to hold the steam or three dots buttons on your steam deck and move the right track pad to use a mouse. I'm not sure why this happens but some programs using proton sometimes have this issue.
UPDATE 20/04/23: Modded Fallout New Vegas has stopped working due to new Updates on the Deck. I keep getting the error "An instance of Mod Organizer is already running" and I can't find any way to fix this problem. Has anyone solved this problem? Can't play New Vegas no more. OLD Message when modded New Vegas worked: Thanks a ton!
I couldn't get the download links to work from nexus. It doesn't recognize MO2 as a flatpak application (it isn't) that I can select to open the link. Instead I manually downloaded them and put them in MO2's download folder. From MO2, on the bottom right, navigate to downloads and install them that way. Then delete those files within the download folder (but not within MO2 because it'll send them to a fake recycling bin and be a pain to find and actually delete).
So this comment pointed me in the right direction as I looked for a fix myself. It turns out, flatpak browsers like Firefox and Chrome downloaded from the Discovery store, use…. I believe this is correct… the flatpak-portal rather than xdg-open (which was working for NXM links). If you copy the modorganizer2-nxm-handler.desktop to /var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications it will show up in the picker dialogue. It won’t default to it, and it still has the “unable to start download bug” if it’s already running. But it’s a step in the right direction?
Could you do one on how to transfer a modded game and mods to Steam deck from PC? My New Vegas has over 200 mods installed in Mod Organiser 2, I wanna transfer all that over instead of starting from scratch
Hey, I can not find my mods when trying to manual install. I have the mods downloaded into the downloads folder and I can see them there but when I try to search for them in mo2 they don't appear.

I had the mod organizer 2 working fine with fallout new vegas and after closing it. I can't get it to reopen. I don't know how I can launch the exe. When I launch NV it does NOT launch MO2. I can launch the exe through steam but then I have to direct the game to the libraries of the installs but since it's not utilizing dolphin it can't see the hidden steam files so it can't find the game I have installed.
I had to delete the entire prefix and mod organizer 2 files on my steam deck and then reinstall it to get it to work again when that happened to me, it only happened once but it was frustrating.
@@xvinx2446 in protontricks, if your game (for me it was fallout nv) is in the list you gotta use the numbers to find the game folder, alternatively deleting the game off of steam will automatically delete this prefix folder. I did also have to manually go to fallout New Vegas steam folder in properties and then delete that entire folder and reinstall the game, then I just went to mod organizer 2 GitHub and got the Linux installer, installed it for fallout New Vegas , and since your prefix is brand new you don't have to archive the old one when the installer asks you to

Great video! I was able to get mo2 working perfectly. However I noticed that the game wouldn't launch when launched through game mode. I was wondering if there was a fix for this as I would rather not have to go to desktop mode every time I wanna play the game.
Unfortunately I haven't had the issue with it not launching in game mode. For me when I run Skyrim in game mode it opens MO2. When you run Skyrim in desktop mode does it open MO2?
@@SteelLodgeThanks for the quick reply! To answer your question yes, launching skyrim on desktop does open mo2. When I launch it on gamemode however, the console thing opens for a few seconds then closes and nothing happens after.
@@jack123673 sorry to hear that, on game mode for me the console comes up too then goes away. After that it opens up MO2. There should be a way by renaming some .exe files to just make it launch Skyrim instead of MO2. Just be careful though and maybe make a backup of the files if you try it out. Worst case scenario you can probably add the regular SKSE.exe to steam as a non steam game. You just want to make sure you are launching Skyrim via skse.

Hey man - great guide! I am, however, running into an issue with a crash that says 'Wine C++ Runtime Library' and, in true Linux fashion, the internet doesn't give me any real answers to what the crash may mean or what it's caused by. Is it a lack of Visual C++ Redistributables? My mod load order includes things like Nemesis and uses the Special Edition instead of the Anniversary Edition, but works without any mods.
@@SteelLodge so MO2 doesn't install all of VC++? I'm trying to run some combat overhaul mods and PayloadInterperter isn't working and I believe that's the case. I know I can install BF redistributables via protontricks but I only have up to 2010 and nothing past it. How could I go about getting newer versions added?
I went through step by step... mod organize 2, running it brings up an error that i don't have protontricks... despite being able to pull up it in Konsole, am I missing something?
Do you HAVE to launch MO2 every time you want to play the game? I currently have a couple of simple mods installed along with SKSE manually (no mod manager) but it looks like manually installing the vast majority of mods require a manager to keep things sane. But ideally I'd rather have two options in Steam, one for launching Skyrim normally (actually SKSE renamed to Skyrim launcher) and then another for launching MO2. Once the mods are set up I want to spend the majority of time playing the game, so no need to launch MO2 all the time. What I'm not clear on is whether each custom entry in steam game uses it's own dedicated wine prefix or whether I can have one for MO2 that also points to the same wine location as the main Skyrim. Hopefully that made sense !
Good guide though everything worked up to the point where I launched the game but the MO2 script did not trigger when launching the game and then the game just launches on its own without MO2. Even going to the folder where MO2 was created and running it manually there does nothing.

I'm having the same problem. Anyone have a fix for this?
As of 2023, this no longer works. For some reason you can follow all of the steps perfectly and get to the stage where your installing Mod Organiser 2, but it will crash at the end and give you an error message. I have tried this method for installing MO2 for both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas but unfortunately it no longer works. Im guessing this is an issue with the latest steam deck firmware or proton tricks no longer working as it should. AN updated guide is needed!
worked for me today
Worked for me on oblivion and enderal SE. The issue you mention is either specific to those games or, more likely, an issue on your end
Seems to work for me
My deck refuses to load the python.dll when booting up MO2. if I skip it, MO2 will load, but I'm sure that's not good. Any idea why this is happening?
for some reason I get "error redirector binaries not found. I think I have installed everything, most stuff was already installed by valve
This is amazing, will it work with programs like Nemesis and such too?
This has been an absolute nightmare that I've been at for hours, very frustrating. Right now when I try downloading MO2 it goes through the full installation in the console then at the very end says "Error check terminal for more details" I've followed everything to an absolute T yet it still isn't working properly.
What is the issue here?
I’m getting “cannot find cabextract” after doing it again for oblivion, I didn’t get it for Skyrim tho, what do I do?
It seems the newest version of Protontricks has an issue causing this to happen. If you can use an older version I would try that. If you can't get one you might have to wait.
'Progress bar' for progression of chapter in vid.... bro if I ever start a youtube channel imma use that and shout you out! 😅.... for real good idea!
STEEL LODGE!... 😅if I write it or type it I won't forget it..... bro no joke great idea!
Is there any workarounds for Micro SD? I’ve got the 64 GB deck and don’t have room to move my games to the SSD
Same
This guide is incredible.
When I go to install MO2 I keep getting an error message that it cannot find the directory
How do you delete Mod Organizer 2 for a clean re-install? I got to a point where there was an error and it has to be totally redone. I cant launch Oblivion anymore.
I am gonna sell my SX that for sure now.
Yeh I'm getting the same error, as a linux n00b this is all in Alien speak to me, hopefully someone will provide a solution to assist
Hope this works for you too
@@melsh7628 oh thank you! I’ll give it a shot once I start trying to mod nv again.
Can you please make a tutorial on how to install LOOT? Or how to manage your load order? I don't really understand how to do this
You should be able to do it in MO2 there are plenty of resources going in depth for how to do this on YT
I installed LOOT. It will open outside of MO2 but not through it. I keep getting an EnableNonClientDpiScaling error each time I try to run it.
LOOT v0.17.0 seems to work. None of the newer versions do though. Maybe an issue with wine? Idk. Someone smarter than me may know.

Hi, so when it comes to downloading mods I can't seem to download via MO2. I tried to open it via the .exe file but it doesn't work. It works just fine when I open Skyrim but I cannot get it to actually download mods. What can I do?
Exact things happens to me with Fallout New Vegas. I'm trying to get help myself😭
“Creating a new instance”
Which do you suggest? Global/portable
Amazing guide! Worked well the first couple play through, but now when Running skyrim in game mode or desktop it opens the Skyrim launcher instead of MO2, anyway I can make it so it opens up mo2 again?
Im having an issue for fallout NV and 4 when i try to install it i get stuck on the "configuring game prefix" ive waited 30+ mins on each install and nothing ever happens, not sure how to fix
i have the same issue
Following, I'm having the same issue with NV and 3
Same here. Seems like it's a recent issue since I can't find any reference except from the past few days and there is several on this video.
Current version of protontricks is having issues with this process unfortunately. Hopefully a fix that updates things will drop soon.
good to know im not the only one, someone let me know when its fixed please!
playing with proton 6 resulted in the game freezing or audio cutting out whenever an NPC started speaking even without any mods
edit: reinstalling the game did nothing
I'm sorry to hear that, try deleting the proton data in the Steam compatdata folder if you know where to find it! I didn't really have problems with my installation.
Did you try and make sure you launched your game using proton 6.3 before installing MO2?
@@gosusteele yep, seems like skyrim just wont work on proton 6 for me. it even had issues on a fresh installation of skyrim without MO2. I'm gonna try what steel lodge said
@@SteelLodge still not working ;-;
Got around this issue by installing with proton 6 and then switching back to proton 7
Works great, only issue is that Nexus isn't sending the mods I download to Mod Manager 2! I have to manually download everything despite the fact that I used method 2
Any fix?
@@northernmaximus not that I know of, I've just been downloading the ZIPs and using the "install archived mod" option
This has happened with another version of PT before.
cant get it to work. it hangs forever on configuring game prefix. Ive got some unknown flatpak file system permission errors too for some reason
Current version of protontricks is having issues with this process unfortunately. Hopefully a fix that updates things will drop soon.
After installing MO2 it works but I dont have F4SE as an option to lunch on MO2 just the regular Fallout 4 .exe, I tried to add F4SE files to FO4 root where the exe is but then MO2 does not work anymore, it seems I have a directory named f4se_0_06_23 on my FO4 root folder with all the script extender files but I cant make MO2 to use those files and I dont know what to do to use the script extender on this game, any advice?
is there a way to make this work on sd cards? for 64gb steam decks. i have no space =(
I have only one issue with this video, you didn’t explain where you got that application for x-scheme handler and how we’re supposed to get it, I can’t find it.
how would i uninstall?
It's not installing the mod when I click the vortex instal method, it opens up MO2 but then just simply does absolutely nothing.
1:25 Ok but we want that covered tho 🙄
Almost got it working. At the end, running SKSE in MO2 just says "Couldn't find TESV_original."
No idea if you're still replying etc. I've done this guide for skyrims works beautifully. Thing is I wanted to do the same for oblivion, just wondere if you had any idea how I would launch modloader with both and not have some clashing
I followed the advanced method and Mo doesn’t load python_plugin.DLL. Nor does it load skse and some other 10 mods that Bork my playthru. Help me lol
I can’t install miniconda3. After downloading it and running the command, I get a “file/directory doesn’t exist” error. I copy and pasted from the description and typing it myself. Im new to Linux but not to consoles. Im baffled
I’m also in the correct directory as the file
Renaming worked. Moving to next step
Back in the same boat
This video was awesome but I really need to uninstall mo2, does anyone have any idea how to or a video showing how to? I'm a complete Linux noob ngl
hi! have you found out how to uninstall all that in the meantime?
I had the mod organizer 2 working fine with fallout new vegas and after closing it. I can't get it to reopen.
I don't know how I can launch the exe.
When I launch NV it does NOT launch MO2.
I can launch the exe through steam but then I have to direct the game to the libraries of the installs but since it's not utilizing dolphin it can't see the hidden steam files so it can't find the game I have installed.
I had to delete the entire prefix and mod organizer 2 files on my steam deck and then reinstall it to get it to work again when that happened to me, it only happened once but it was frustrating.
@@theattila567 How do you go about doing that? I’m pretty sure I did that?
@@xvinx2446 in protontricks, if your game (for me it was fallout nv) is in the list you gotta use the numbers to find the game folder, alternatively deleting the game off of steam will automatically delete this prefix folder. I did also have to manually go to fallout New Vegas steam folder in properties and then delete that entire folder and reinstall the game, then I just went to mod organizer 2 GitHub and got the Linux installer, installed it for fallout New Vegas , and since your prefix is brand new you don't have to archive the old one when the installer asks you to
@@xvinx2446 I went on the MO2 github and followed their guide and used the Linux installer
@@xvinx2446 if you can't figure it out drop your discord name and I'll try to walk you through the steps of getting MO2 to run, some mods don't install on steam deck and some have workarounds so You're gonna have to do your own research on individual mods and how to mod on steam deck, but MO2 setup only takes 1 minutes with the installer

How when I launch the game MO2 opens but when I click run MO2 tries to open again. This happened for all of the .exe files in my Games folder.
When i get the the license agreement for miniconda it just stopped after displaying
@@SteelLodge Thanks for the advice. It did end up working somehow. I'm not exactly sure if it was something I did or not, but mo2 is now launching in game mode perfectly.
Did a factory reset and got to installing of mo2 part but get this Error redirector binaries not found. What I'm I missing?

Hey man - great guide! I am, however, running into an issue with a crash that says 'Wine C++ Runtime Library' and, in true Linux fashion, the internet doesn't give me any real answers to what the crash may mean or what it's caused by. Is it a lack of Visual C++ Redistributables? My mod load order includes things like Nemesis and uses the Special Edition instead of the Anniversary Edition, but works without any mods.
Sorry to hear that! What other mods are you running? I think some do require the VC++ redist such as the Skyrim engine fix mod.
I got to the part where i am meant to DL a mod from nexus only the mod never starts downloading
Failed to load module "appmenu-gtk-module" i keep getting this in the terminal, and im still getting the error after doing the mkdir command
I went through step by step... mod organize 2, running it brings up an error that i don't have protontricks... despite being able to pull up it in Konsole, am I missing something?
Same here! Would love some help
I think if you are managing your mods with MO2 you have to launch skse through MO2. at least if you are using virtual profile.
I installed method one but changed my mind to method 2. Vortex wont open in the browswr...
Good guide though everything worked up to the point where I launched the game but the MO2 script did not trigger when launching the game and then the game just launches on its own without MO2. Even going to the folder where MO2 was created and running it manually there does nothing.
I have the same issue. I loaded FO4 at the same time and MO2 loads on launch there no issue.
Can’t associate nxm files handler error popped up?? So just download them manually for now? I don’t understand how you didn’t get that error
could you explain quickly how to open the konsole?? and can i just move my mods from computer to steam deck + ini.file in the mo2 folder??
