Great to see some locations still survive. I am fascinated about film locations and spend hours searching them out.
My family now refuse to watch a film with me because I endlessly pause to check out locations. It can take me three nights to watch a standard film.
But when I've sorted the locations out I then watch the entire film without pausing.
Love movie locations, live searching for them and seeing how they look now or if they are still there. Drives my family up the walls but I love it, a real passion of mine.

'The old city has been swept away..' Yes, and all the character with it. Now it looks more or less like every other pile of postmodern Lego bricks, corporate retail wigwams and giant lava lamp splodges made of stainless steel. Only the buildings that were left standing are still local in character.Newcastle is just another city trying the tourist leisure route, and that isn't real culture, it's just locals grazing like Americans The accent is the only thing left that marks out the locality. Newcastle has been globalised, and the Geordies are just global product ruminants who retained their funny accents from their ancestors who actually had an identity. Much like every other regional area.

I don't even like to call myself a Geordie anymore because of the wankers in Geordie shore

Speaking of extras, "Not a lot of people know that.." the film features the first acting (if you can call it that) appearance of Jimmy Nail. Then 15, he and his mate went down to the Oxford ballroom where outside scenes were being shot, basically hung around and pestered the crew asking to be extras. The pair can be seen very briefly (you need to freeze frame!) leaning on the wall outside as Caine enters the nightclub.

Wrong pub. No matter what crap they have on their walls. Carter leaves by the old ticket office and crosses over to the old Douglas hotel.

Great film but Michael Caine’s inability to do a geordie accent should have disqualified him.

I am from northern New Jersey, near New York City, but I have loved "Get Carter" for a long time. It is a brilliant film, and I was glad to see this interview with Mike Hodges and listen to Simon King host this program and discuss the film. I hope to visit Newcastle-upon-Tyne at some point for nostalgic purposes, though I'm sure it's an interesting city to visit in its own right. I know that Sting hails from Newcastle; he now resides in NYC. Sadly, I have never been to the U.K. in my life, and there is so much I would like to to see there. Part of my own ancestry traces to the U.K., in Lincolnshire dating back to the 17th Century, and I certainly want to visit that region. I will hopefully be coming over there next May for a graduate course related to British archives. Does anyone from Newcastle have any suggestions about what to do and where to go while there? I would welcome your advice. Many thanks, chaps (or mates)!
