  • Build shoulder control and speed to improve your Salsa Shimmy whether you're a beginner or intermediate dancer. This video is for both men and women that want to add body movement and styling to your Salsa dancing.
    We first break down how to isolate your shoulders to help you gain control. Once you've got that down we do a 1-minute shimmy exercise and drill with Salsa music to help you gain more control and speed. The more you do the exercise in this video to practice your shimmy, the better your shimmy will get. You will see improvement!
    Shake it don't break it! We love shimmies.
    We hope this helps you!

    i recently tried just shaking/twisting ribcage by isolating mid-torso and neck instead, got a shoulder shimmy by relaxing shoulders, rather than isolating shoulders and it felt much easier and more enjoyable to get to high tempo

    Amazing tips & instructions, helped a lot. I am sort of okay with the single time, but definitely need to practice a lot more to make it better and be able to do it double time. I recently came across a UA-cam video of a dancer dancing casino / Cuban style, and was amazed by his shoulder movements.
    Makes sense it's easier to isolate by just sitting down. Ideal practice time would be during my 9-5 work-from-home finance job.

    This is easier sitting down. Now how to we keep our lower body stable so the movement doesn’t get absorbed by our bodies? Also what should hands/arms be doing when shimmying in a dance?

    • @TheSalsaBeat
      @TheSalsaBeat  Рік тому

      Regarding the shaking of the butt… start by bending the knees a little and shimmy slowly as you isolate the hips and try not to move them. Speed it up. If the butt begins to shake… slow down, and little by little increase the speed.
      Secondly, try it while standing on one foot, then transfer to the other foot. since the goal is to shimmy while dancing then you want to practice shimming while alternating your steps, vs shimmying while standing still on both feet.
      Lastly, regarding hands, at first your goal is to learn to isolate them while you shimmy your shoulders. Try holding something on the palm in each hand and try not to drop it while you shimmy. This will train to be able to stay connected with a follower, and shimmy at the same time and not shake your hand connection. Hope this helps!

    hey! i think i do the movements well, but it looks stiff. any tips?

    • @TheSalsaBeat
      @TheSalsaBeat  3 роки тому +3

      Hey Steijn! Where are you feeling stiff the most?
      For me, the key was practice, practice and smile. I encourage you to start practicing with Cha Cha music. Pick a song with no words so that you can really focus on the music. With time, as your isolations become controlled you will notice other muscles relax.
      Lastly, Know that My shimmies were stiff for some time too, just like my basic step, but with time and practice I still became a professional performer and instructors. So can you!!!

    Whenni try to do it....my butt shakes but why?????

    • @TheSalsaBeat
      @TheSalsaBeat  3 роки тому

      Hola! Don’t sweat it too much. I use to do the same. This is why I like to start seated, cause it grounds my hips. Once we stand up it gets a little harder to not move them. My tip will be make sure you keep your knees bent at all times, it’ll help engage the muscles that stabilize the hips. Do that and then start your shimmies slow, keep hips stable and gradually speed up. Once butt muscles begin to shake - slow it down again. Let us know how this works! Thanks for watching and following us.

      @@TheSalsaBeat Thanks for your reply. I appreciate that to do shimmies takes practice ++. It’s a move I’ve always struggled with as my boobs get too involved!! You are professionals and so I’m sure you can cope with this observation. I am in very good shape with good articulation in my shoulders but struggle with isolating just those. I’d very much welcome any more approaches to developing shimmies without setting off the chest muscles!!
