1:29 Goodbye my Danish Sweetheart 8:47 Square 16:05 Strawberry Blonde 19:32 Humpty 23:04 I want you 26:16 Shame 31:08 Because Dreaming 36:04 Circle 40:24 Class of 2013 Faves: Goodbye MDS, Square, Shame, Because Dreaming (But so many good ones so these are top of top! I'm framing Shame tbh)
Strawberry Blonde is actually interesting in how it tells its story! Within the song she's comparing herself to Euro-centric beauty and not fitting into the beauty of a blonde woman because of her race and struggling to find that confidence in her own beauty. She idolizes the girlfriend and follows the white lines literally referring to white people and fitting their definition of beauty. That's why it's one of my favorites of the album!
Retired from sad new career in business is definitley my favorite favorite mitski album. Goodbye my danish sweetheart might be her best song on this track! She is unfortuantley shutting down her merch store today
I really love circle as a song too because to me it feels like a murder mystery in the sense that one of the lyrics are a LIE. She starts and ends with saying that she lied once during the song and whichever story or stanza that she lied about changes the way the song works. If she lied about the cheating, or if she lied about the heart in the tree, or the lover that is buried underground or if she lied about the fact that the person she is singing to "was happy to have her" it all adds a different meaning to the song and it makes me just sit and think and I LOVE IT.
My personal interpretation of shame is the addictive feeling of self destructive thoughts and behaviors and just the feeling of being in such a low state. Not only that, but being ashamed because it is abnormal and shouldn't be bringing you pleasure, but it does. This next part is a bit hard to explain, but theres just something about keeping everything a secret and holding everything in, and then you go to talk and be with people who have no idea what you've been doing to make yourself feel worse (in my experience) that makes you feel so much guilt. it feels selfish to want to feel so bad because of how good it feels, while there are people "right outside the door" living their daily lives around you and possibly even wanting to help, but having no idea of all the self destruction that happens behind the four walls behind the door, whether theyre literal or not. Its the shame in these sick, twisted behaviors that you start to believe you are an awful person "i never was very good, i havent been so good". I might be projecting though. I also doubt any of this is coherent, im so bad at explaining lol
For me - all the songs have a underlying darkness to them…it’s up to the listener to decide what they mean, but it always feels like they hide something much scarier and a sort of quiet desperation. I think they’re infinitely beautiful and all I want is to make art this wonderful. Also I love these videos so much, because it makes me listen to it in a whole other light!! I’d definitely watch if you’d make a deeper analysis video after listening to them for a while! Also…Class of 2013 is one of the most powerful songs I have ever witnessed - it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it
Square is so under rated!!!! Its one of my favorite songs in this album and it feels like a sad winter mood kind of. I love how she uses the metaphors in it and how as you said she personifies the simplest things!
You should hear some of her film songs (idk what they're called... But "This Is A Life" "Cop Car" and "Glide" (even though it's a cover) are so good, on par with her album songs...
duuuuude i just realized that in because dreaming costs money, when shes echoing the former verse over what shes singing at the end its the sound of her past dreams like in the shell she was referencing u put ur ear up to and hear the sea but instead its her former dreams, i think thats what it means but im not good at explaining, but shes literally a genius ("bring me to your ear you can hear / the tide where i used to be / though now im but a shell")
so happy you’re back and finishing up this series! also wanted to point out how in Goodbye My Danish Sweetheart she says “you waited and watered my heart til it grew” and idk if it’s intentional but i love how “waited” sounds like “waded” and it feels like it has a double meaning in reference to the water. she’s so clever !!
I think there's an extra layer to strawberry blond about race. Mitski doesn't feel that she's being seen by the person she loves so she "follows the white lines" or tries to follow a more white American way of life to finally be seen. It seems that she also knows that as much as she tries, she'll never get to "live a life in their shape" which I think she shows with the "trying to hold the wind" lyric (because as much as you try you can't hold the wind)
With "Because Dreaming Costs Money...", I think alot of people listen to it and find that it's more like a parent (1Gen immigrant) talking to their kid about chasing their dreams. It's certainly the way I feel about it, though like many of her songs there's more than one way to interpret it.
This video is pretty emotional for me. I've been following these mitski reactions for ages, and this was the finale. I watched it on a rainy bus ride home from seeing some friends for the first time in ages. It was the perfect length for the ride, thank you so much.
One thing about the song "I want you". The door she is talking about in this song is the same door metaphor that she sang about in the song "Door" from her album "Lush". Its a really small thing but it made me really enjoy both the songs even more. (This metaphor could also be applied to the song "Shame" in this same album)
FINALLY!!! i've been waiting for your reaction to this album, because its my favorite mitski album. retired from sad is a really gut-punching and relatable record, considering at the point where i am currently in life, only beginning to experience adulthood and finding jobs when im still scared of what the world offers me - longing the feeling of being younger again. but other than that, this album is really poetic and stripped, which makes it emotional. though i prefer the re-released tracklist because it flows so much better than the current updated one. my favorites are: class of 2013, square, strawberry blonde, i want you, humpty, and goodbye my danish sweetheart.
shame is just insufferably vulnerable. to me, it’s her breaking down completely. it reminds me of self harm. maybe sitting in that bathroom and harming yourself while nobody knows. it’s something you start to depend on: “i don’t need anybody other than you”, it’s something shameful that you keep hidden away. it is mitski’s writing though so it could be about countless of other things!
Hiii so for i want you the "i found you i foubd the door but when i steeped through there was no floor" thing she's most likely referencing to her song "door" as she already did sometimes. She's saying that she found the door= the love but that this love couldn't work bcs of their situation at this time so she's like falling deeper than she already was bcs maintaining or trying to maintain this love is aggraving their situation
You have to listen the new Lana's single A&W. By the way, I love the reaction, Mitski recorded the album when she was in the college, the instrumentation is the orchestra of the university.
i’ve been waiting for this video! so glad to see your reaction to her beautiful lyricism, i would definitely totally recommend you fiona apples “Tidal” album, most of the songs are so poetic and so beautiful and gorgeous vocals!
square could possibly be about going on a date with a person for the first time and wanting to fit their standards and strawberry blonde is mostly speculated to be about poc/woc struggles in america !
Another way Mitski describes not really putting her whole self into the other person in Circle is when she says "I would give you my heart, I think" it shows how she would like to but not really promising them what she isn't sure herself. She isn't sure if she is really willing to give that person her heart.
I also really love that she adds that she "thinks" she would give them her heart because you dont really "think" about such matters when you are in love. Love is a feeling and it would be more fitting to say "I would give you my heart I feel" but instead she reveals that her "love" is purely accidental or manufactured, not a real feeling.
IT'S FINALLY HERE! I was waiting for this video!!! I'm a big fan of your Mitski reactions and for me Retired from Sad always seemed like the one you'd enjoy the most! I'm so happy!
Because Dreaming Costs Money My Dear and Class of 2013 are connected to each other, BDCMMD is about how parents sacrifice everything to give their children everything and Class of 2013 is about how people aren't ready to leave their parents and be an adult
I highly recommend you to listen to indie-folk group Daughter, they have a great but dark lyrics, otherwise their lyrics are so poetic and wise, you should react to their album “If You Leave” and “Not to Disappear”
these are so beautiful omg! you should definitely look into analysing billies happier than ever album because there’s so many amazing songs on there that honestly are really meaningful
How are none of the reactors crying I started bawling my eyes out like 5 different times 😭😭 Mitski literally invented new emotions that I can only feel when listening to her
i want you is about a toxic relationship, on the first verse, the card she holds and can’t use can refer to not being able to say how she actually feels. On the chorus she shows the impact this person has on her and that even though she wants them she has her reasons to feel apprehensive about the relationship that is in a way that is so frustrating that she needs a quiet place where she can finally let out everything but she can’t afford him hearing that. on the second verse she shows us how this person seemed to be it but when she got too immersed she realized that everything turned into something that she did not expect, as she says “there was no floor” can be seen as she fell too hard for the person and it isn’t something good but also that she doesn’t have anything to stand on with this person as we see again at the end of the song even after all that she still wants them even though she knows it isn’t good
I think when she says "I found you, I found the door" it could be a reference to the end of the song in the lush album Door when it says " It cried out a creak and opened to show me what's beyond it a hopeless, a violence I named it: Love"
Most of mitskis song I agree with other fans about the meaning but for shame I kind of took my own meaning for the song. For me it's about being perfect, good, and innocent in others people's eyes but when the doors are closed the character turns to their needs and lust. The ups and downs of the strings feels like when you get high in doing what you secretly like (or maybe even the character giving in to her lust). And when she says "I don't need anything other than you" it feels like she's talking about herself and how she could always count on her own secrets and interest to keep her happy amidst of everyone's expectations of her.
I hope you can also react to Caroline Polachek’s newest album, ‘Desire, I Want to Turn into You”. It is currently the highest rated album of the year, and it deserves your deep, poetic analysis 🙏
I want you is actually a hate song i think! Im pretty sure theres no floor because theres no way she actually wants to start over, and shes screaming in the car about how much she 'loves' the person un the song ( i could be wrong! But ive heard that that's the reak meaning" )
1:29 Goodbye my Danish Sweetheart

19:32 Humpty
23:04 I want you
26:16 Shame

(But so many good ones so these are top of top! I'm framing Shame tbh)
shame is also my most favorite from this record!
When the vocal effects come in in shame I elevate to a higher dimension
Goodbye MDS is so underrated 😭😭😭
When i listen to shame i feel like i’m a character slowly descending into insanity
Strawberry Blonde is actually interesting in how it tells its story! She idolizes the girlfriend and follows the white lines literally referring to white people and fitting their definition of beauty. That's why it's one of my favorites of the album!
The "white lines" metaphor is so good! It adds so much to the song
Retired from sad new career in business is definitley my favorite favorite mitski album. Goodbye my danish sweetheart might be her best song on this track! She is unfortuantley shutting down her merch store today
wait why is she shutting down her merch store???
I really love circle as a song too because to me it feels like a murder mystery in the sense that one of the lyrics are a LIE. My fav of the album so underrated.
To this day I still don’t understand how this is one of mitski’s most hated and underrated album

Honestly the og version doesn’t make me feel much but the audiotree live version breaks my soul apart
@@seanyyoung4565 opposite for me, tbh its something about the piano that makes me cry even harder
My absolute favorite Mitski album!!! Square is my all time favorite Mitski song, it makes me go feral
Square feels so intimate and intense but not vulgar its soo beautiful. My fav from this album
Square is so under rated!!!! Its one of my favorite songs in this album and it feels like a sad winter mood kind of. I love how she uses the metaphors in it and how as you said she personifies the simplest things!
The mitski saga doesn’t have to end she has a few singles and features for maybe like a post finale epilogue you can listen to all those
You should hear some of her film songs (idk what they're called... But "This Is A Life" "Cop Car" and "Glide" (even though it's a cover) are so good, on par with her album songs...

Square is my favorite Mitski song ever. It makes me cry every time 🥺 how can she perfectly put into words what ive felt so many times like 😭
You should check Adrianne Lenker both her solo stuff and "Big thief" the band she's part of.
I think she's one of the best songwriters ever
