- In this weeks video, I discuss audio and my favorite new piece of audio gear. Its the Zoom F1 Field Recorder.
Do you realize how important audio is to the overall success of your video projects? If not, you should definetly check this video out. Audio quality is absolutly critical if you want your videos to reach their maximum impact potential. Poor audio is probably one of the main reasons that someone will stop watching a video part way through so you have to get this right.
One of the best tools to help capture that crisp, clean audio is the Zoom F1 Field Recorder. The Zoom F1 is available as a part of a couple of different bundles and provides a ton of versitility and value.
It can be used with the full lineup of Zoom's plug in capsules and is small enough to easily fit in your pocket. As an added bonus, the F1 packs downright excellent audio quality into this tiny powerhouse of a recorder.
With really comparible audio quality to Zoom's larger field recorders like the commonly used H4n, H5 and H6. The F1 is the perfect compliment to larger existing setups as well as being a fully capable stand alone recorder solution. Totally agree with all your comments regarding the inconvenience of battery replacement and SD card. Otherwise, I'm happy with it easy to move around or if you need to travel.

can you plug in a different external Lav mic or does the F1 only work with Zoom Lav Mic?
You can plug a different one in and it should work fine.
Do you have a recommendation on settings when recording a live band
If I was using this recorder then I would specifically record low so I could bring back the volume in post. This video is a few years old so to be honest, I’d probably look into a different recorder that offered 32bit float recording so that I could be sure I would blow out the audio.

Can we record internally with a Powerbank? Can we record a stereo line level?
Sorry for the delayed answer but... Yes on both counts. The recorder works very well with a USB power bank and the standard input is a combo mic/line input.

I think I'll choose the one rather than the H5 zoom. Have encountered battery compartment breakage problems?
Mine still works just fine. It’s just a bit finicky to close back up when you’re replacing the AAA batteries
Can you use this mic to record from a sound mixer?
I think that would really depend on what inputs are available on your sound mixer. As it stands, the F1 is meant to be a standalone recorder so I am not sure if that’s the route you’d want to go with it.

What about the Zoom H6? Wouldn't it be a better choice?
I think it really depends on your intended use and budget.
You could buy 2 F1 recorders for the price of an H6. Also, the form factor is totally different. The H6 (which I love by the way) is more of an all around recording tool but it is a little larger than something like an H4N. The F1 is very small, like palm sized and is more geared toward being a stand alone lapel mic recorder. It’s just really nice to have the additional functionality of the capsule system in such a small package.
Can I use this to record educational video and should I buy with shotgun
I don’t think you’d have any issues using it to record educational videos.
As for the shotgun attachment, I can see the convenience of it but I think you need to base that decision more off of your recording situation. Personally I prefer the F1 as a stand alone lav recorder and I use a different recording setup when using a shotgun mic. It just depends on if I’m recording in studio or out in the world somewhere

Great review, I';m not buying this thing tho. It's expensive and I cannot reuse the shotgun mic, If I want decent audio I rather tget the h4n pro or ther h5
Thank you! I agree with you on the reasons why not to buy one. The tiny size does make it nice for traveling as well but it’s definitely missing features I would need in a main recorder.
