  • My First Impression of the Werner Surge paddle. A side by side look with the paddles I normally use and some real world testing to give a first impression. Overall pretty sweet, would I trade in my Powerhouse or ShoGun for it? Solid maybe.
    DISCLAIMER Werner did not sponsor this video, they don't support me, I pay for all my paddles, I was just able to borrow these paddles from the Werner importer to make this video.

    I get the added reach when doing a vertical paddle stroke. It seems like so many brands are focusing on their own version of a forward offset paddle blade. I'm wondering how it does for downriver play like stern prys and reverse sweeps for tailies and rock splats. Thanks for all the insightful videos.

    Thanks for this video. Got a bit fired up when I first saw the Surge but now I think I'll stick to the Powerhouse - just longer. Been using one since 2006.

      joimeistari I’ll definitely be considering a swap when it’s time for me but I’m not racing to make the switch until my current blades are done-zo

    Just rewatched this piece as I recently got a Powerhouse, and noticed how much I liked watching your on the water commentary while you’re paddling. Also wondered if you’ve ever done a video on the use of the draw stroke you’re utilizing to such nice effect in that segment? Seems very integrated into much of your downriver paddling. Is it a stern draw, that then becomes a brace? Anyway, have actually started attempting something like that move into my own paddling, and tho I don’t actually know what I’m doing yet, there are times I find it very useful in correcting my approach angle without having to resort to a back paddle move. Cheers.

      I just re-watched and couldn't line up what you are describing with a time stamp. Can you point to a time stamp so I can look again and break it down? Thanks

    Hi. Thanks for the vid. Question: Any issues with the Surge or Strike breaking at the neck whether due to rocks or big water? thanks.

    Is there a difference when rolling and bracing compared to the powerhouse caused by the offset of the blades?

      Tom Peels to be straight up, this day was freezing and I didn’t roll or brace. So I cannot honestly say. Sorry!

    How does it feather? That shape has me concerned it it will glide or be kind of choppy

    Do you mostly use straight shaft paddles? What offset?

    • @kenrivard9557
      @kenrivard9557 3 роки тому

      Meant feather not offset.

      @@kenrivard9557 Mix of both, prefer straight for going downstream and bent for freestyle. 30 degrees feather.

      I have not but if there is a Galasport dealer/importer in Ontario who will lend me a paddle I will make a similar video and a comparison.

      Seth Ashworth Sorry, I think I spoke too soon, and for that and the snarkiness of my comment...apologies. Your initial impressions were spot on. A friend has a powerhouse (197) and I tried it last time out against my (194) surge. I agree with you, and think the powerhouse has a suple efficient catch, and release, and as you say, really might be the best value for money. I also think the spin test is very telling, as e suge is a bit slow in that category. I also have a player, and though not really a river running paddle, i appreciate the quickness and lightness of feel. It also passes the spin test you demonstrated nicely. So, long story short, the surge is hanging out in the garage, I’m back using my player (low water late season fun) and thinking I’ll cool it for paddles at the moment. Thanks for all the work you do sharing information and helping to educate the kayaking community.

      milllworks thanks for being one humble SOB. It takes a set to say UA-cam weren’t right. I change my mind of stuff all the time but usually after careful consideration, thanks for taking careful consideration and trying a few things side by side!
