More audio evidence that at one time on this world, Phil Collins was a absolute badass drummer and a force behind the kit. Anyone who only judges him by his solo work or more commercial material are only getting half the story. The drums sound great, lots of presence and separation between the tones, and very lively. Like someone else pointed out, the Snare is cracking through the mix like a hot knife through butter. Explosive playing on an explosive track from probably the best Genesis album recorded, and I include the Gabriel era in that. The Boys had their backs against the wall and responded with a defiant SCREW YOU to everyone who thought they were done. Now , if someone would do some Iso tracks from Phil's Brand X side project :)
Phil was a huge influence on me too but this album is not the best drums on any Genesis album. For me anyway Selling England by the Pound is phenomenal. This is a great example of his drumming though I agree. This and the reprise at the end of the album. But the rest of the album is just ok drum wise. Suppers Ready is awesome too. Lamb has cool shit as well. Either way big influence on me. Have a good one. Listen to Selling England again in some good headphones!!!
His modulation of the hi-hat creating that lovely swirliness, his flams, his overall groove, his fills, his speed, his kick foot control. Drummer's drummer for sure. Miles beyond any contemporary for groove. You can hear why he became a towering pop music star purely in his drumming.
This is one of Phil's best-ever drum performances--so happy to get it in isolation. It sounds amazing. Phil was one of the most talented people ever to get behind the skins.
@@You-Deef Brand X was great, but the compositions in Genesis were just better, and that makes the drum performances better, IMO--because he's playing to better material.
@@spiritof6663 Well I’m more a fan of Genesis than Brand X, but yes the drumming in Brand X has the edge, just listening to “Running on three” isolated drums, it’s incredible, have a listen to it
Bonham was known for his bass drum sound, but I've only just noticed that Phil always has a cracking snare drum sound. Im aware of the Collins gated drum sound, this has more crack.
He played the Premier Resonator snare in the mid '70s. All of the studio recordings he made from 1974-76 have that unique sound (live he played this or a Fibes acrylic). There's a video of a guy on UA-cam playing a purple Resonator set and the snare sounds just like Phil from that period.
As I have known for decades, but this confirms; the man is genius. Rock solid with a concept. Love that repeated off-beat accent he uses throughout....then drives it home.

Phil never could play much. Just keep the beat. I mean look at Dukes Travels Dukes End. Ya think he could have jazzed it up a bit. And The Battle Of Epping Forest. He missed a lot of chances to really enhance the music instead of just kick snare and a roll every fourth bar.
@@immrjohndaryl Jeez I was just being facetious. He's the best prog drummer ever to touch two sticks. He truly created prog. Him and Barriemore Barlow and Alan White and Bill Bruford AND JOHN P. WEATHERS!! But Phil was otherworldly. Admittedly partly because the Genesis music was so astounding.

Nah, it’s not close to his best drum performances, still good but nowhere near his best, all his best work was in Brand X

Then you should check out his work with Brand X, which is as technically challenged as you could imagine.
He always liked to show off more playing live than in the studio on the early days, i.e. Riding the Scree.
