  • Durango, Colorado has some incredible mountain biking, and the town has been a centerpiece in the bike world for decades now. From John Tomac ripping Hogsback Ridge in Retread the movie to the World Champs in 1992 to the various NORBA Nationals, the bike history in Durango runs deep. I was lucky enough to meet up with some of the members of the local cycling community and get to taste the culture for myself.

    Which bike in the vid is your favorite? Of course, I'm partial to the Ibis rides: the Mojo Ti and the Mojo 3. But Brendan's Fat Chance has a cool story behind it, Mike's 3D is crazy light, and his Yeti Ultimate is way rad!

    Answer Accu-Trax! I had a pair of those! Man... that takes me back to the rad old days of my circa 1987 Cannondale M-800 with scary brakes, flimsy wheels, bad tires and sketchy handling. I wouldn't trade a second of those days! Great video Jeff, absolutely sharing the STOKE in the best way!

    So, looked like the old cantilever brakes were a little sketchy on those steep downhill sections. I was there before suspension was accepted. Old timers swore it would never catch on, lol. Rockin' it old school was pretty cool. Classic bikes on classic trails, very enjoyable entertainment!!! Epic skills and technique!

    Dude, I just found this video. I LOVE IT! I moved to Durango 6 months ago (to ride) and it is everything you portray. Hogsback is one of the scariest rides a MTBer may ever undertake. Skiing on dirt. Come on back anytime! The old bike theme is killer - I have the very last Bontrager RaceLite ever made (in Santa Cruz in the 90's) in my garage! Still rides!

    As a FLC Alumni (class of '86) I 've ridden or attempted to ride many of the places in your video. Only we were girls with borrowed Schwinns .Who could afford a mountain bike? Who needs suspension or disc brakes? Ned would pass us in a cloud of dust . Be kind to the old women you pass on the gravel roads. We pioneered MTBing in Durango. Wish I still had my good old RockHopper. It was stolen many years ago. And where are the ladies in your video?

      Ah Davis, I don't have a scale, so I don't know! It's definitely light though.

    How do you like the 2.6s riding this kind of terrain?

    • @JeffKendallWeed
      @JeffKendallWeed  5 років тому +1

      They were great! I prefer them in the rocky stuff in CO more so than here in the PNW loam.

    If you want to be vintage and have good brakes, why not just get magura rim brakes? They have tons of braking power

      Hogsback was scary! Of course it's steeper than it looks, but the bike would very quickly get going way faster than what the canti brakes could stop before the corners, so all the turns were 100% commitment with no bail out option.
