    Ziebart was a very common bitumenistic wax under sealant for rust protection in the 1970s and early 1980s. Also applied inside the lower door areas.

      Should have gone for the 2.0 GL LLK 497 V think that was reg no. Red over Silver later used on the Crusaders and Carousel models. Chuffing turd working for Fed brewery near Metro Center Gateshead totaled it doing 60 in a 30 limit.. The tosser..
      I was only it's second owner..

    What a lovely car the MK5 Cortina, a mate got a 1981/82 Xreg beige 1.6L with GL wheels and chrome rims.He has fitted the clocks off a Ghia model for the rev counter, it's got the OHC pinto engine fitted to a 1984/85 Capri 1.6 Laser 5 speed box to look at the car it is mint. about 10 years ago he also had a 1979/80 Vreg MK5 in blue it was the 1.3L 4door ( most of the 1300,s were 2 door ) that was a mint car as well, under powered but very reliable.The Cortina will always be a classic MK1 or MK5 just like the Escort's,Capri's and even all tho not a Ford the Mini.

    The good old days of Ford & Ghia trim, with the morons running Ford today sadly no more…
    My father purchased brand new in 1978 a Mk4 2.0 Ghia, (UGY 328 S), silver with black vinyl roof and dark grey interior, loved that car, so luxurious and elegant.

    Such nce cars, I had a 2.3 V6 with the German engine back in about 1988. It was immaculate on the body work and interior. I got rid of it after a couple of years, when it needed welding underneath, at the time it wasn't economical to do, on a car that was about 12 years old. So wish I had it now😢

    Our family had a load of these in the late 70's and early 80's : Mom had the 1979 Cortina 1.6L Station Wagon, Dad the 2.0GL sedan in 1982, his brother the 3.0GLS auto sedan in 1983 (with aircon no less) and his younger brother the XR6 in 1984. And Grandad rounded it all off with a 1982 Granada 3.0GLE auto - complete FORD FAMILY then! 😁

I also copied the Cortina Crusader body go-faster strips in red and silver. I also fitted a tinted air deflector to the roof for the sun roof. I had this car for five years and changed it for a Nissan Bluebird saloon in midnight blue a similar shape of car.

    I bought one of these from a squaddie, reg number JHM347W. The only mod it had was the weber carb conversion from the original, horrible VV carb fitted on the production line. 10 years later, I sold it for more than I paid for it.

  • @lazycalm41
    @lazycalm41 4 роки тому +3

    Lovely example. I owned both the 2 litre MK5 auto and a 2.3 Ghia auto and the 2 litre 4 cylinder is the best. The only benefit of the V6 was the smoothness and the soundtrack of course. The 2 litre was actually just as quick and more economical. Those 2.3 V6 engines were not the finest at the time. Fords best of course being the 2.8 as fitted to the MK 2 Granada and MK 3 Capri. Lovely to see a vinyl roof too. Wish car makers would bring them back!

      I'd Have the 2.3 V6, They were Superb. They should have also used that engine in the Capri.
      Well Worth the Extra fuel. Twice the car of the pinto.
      Like he says Power steering was VERY rare on the 2.0 Ghia. It must have been a special Order.

    • @lazycalm41
      @lazycalm41 4 роки тому +1

      @@A1DJPaulTrust me on this, though smooth the 2.3 was nowhere near as good as the 2.8 or indeed the later 2.9. it was a weak V6. surprisingly low on torque and troublesome. The Carpi's 2.8 unit was far superior and more powerful!

    • @carfleet6703
      @carfleet6703 Рік тому +1

      Superb! What made my jaw drop was the pic at the end of your earlier one in Cirrus red - it looked a carbon copy of the one we had - cirrus red (IIRC) with brown vinyl roof. 2.0L Ghia. I loved it. Learnt to drive in the family's 1.6 and later took on the Ghia. The 2.0L was streets ahead of the 1.6. I always reckoned it was better than the 2.3 as it was OHC, so revved sweetly, higher rpm and less clattery. Also lighter, and with no power steering, better balanced than the 2.3. Robust too, only the contact points let it down, and your new one has already been fixed in that regard. Sadly ours did end up in the scrappy, it managed over 110K miles in the end and saw through to 1997, but it was corrosion that did it in, and at that time no-one wanted a project car only 17 years old. Had a number of vehicles since, but still say it was the sweetest i4 I've come across. Sure the others were more powerful, but always sounded more gruff. Only my Volvo 5cyl beat it for tunefulness.

    Got my first car a couple months ago, 1980 cortina in baby blue with the original black plates and motor, and told it had a full rebuild 4 years ago. Been driving it around the block every day and have had no issues with it at all. Dad keeps telling me to sell it so I can buy a modern car with power steering and modern brakes but it’s way to much fun driving the thing around.

    Lovely car, a friend has had an identical Mk V Ghia ' X ' reg.from one year old.For years as it became a 2nd less used car, and relatively worthless , I persuaded him to hang on to it and was even offered it myself.He recently recommissioned it to factory fresh appearance although it wanted for little and he is so glad now that he hung on to her - a car that now turns heads !.Have a 30 year old Sierra 2.0 Ghia estate that is still mint, bought from the original owner 12 years ago and 24,000 miles for £2000 .The ' secret ' is to keep the underside oiled annually, squirt motorcycle chain protective lube into ALL the orifices, sill screw holes and rear door catch screw holes that will permeate to the vulnerable arches -it just refuses to rust !.
