The Cochrane gambit has been tried even at GM level play (in a slow game too if I'm not mistaken) with respectable results. It's a very unusual gambit not only for sacrificing a piece instead of a pawn but for having long-term ideas instead of relying on short-term initiative, which is probably why it can work even at very high levels.
I first saw Nxf7 in a game from the 1800s. When I analyzed it with stockfish and saw barely worse than -1, I knew there was something there. And now you've found it.

I play this online all the time with more wins than losses but I really really want to play this is a otb standard tournament coming up. This video helps a lot.
I am so glad to learn this. I play into the Petrov sometimes because I enjoy the Stafford Gambit lines and have a decent idea as to how and refute them, but I despise the mainline Petrov defense. It is so boring and stale. I've considered this sacrifice a few times, but never did it because I didn't see a follow up. I will definitely be using this.
I generally just take. I think Nc6 is technically theory, but pretty sure that white is happy to trade that knight and win the pawn, playing Nc3 on move 5 to defend the e pawn. Those Stafford gambit lines are pretty good at our level
To be fair, this entire video relies on black making mistakes. 6...Kg8 (instead of 6...Be7) and things turn out very differently. I have played the Petroff for years and faced the Cochrane Gambit many times.
Just accept the gambit take the knight on c6 they will recapture usually with the d pawn. Play nc3 they will play bc5 and then h3. Setup is really solid and gives no advantage for black. After qd4 you play qe2 and you are trying to exchange the black bishop giving you usually a really good position with an extra pawn.
@@GMIgorSmirnovThis video shows the Stafford Gambit ‘for black’! The question was inferring if there is a counter for ‘white’/ can white still utilize the Cochrane gambit by taking on F3 ? ✌️ Thanks for the video none the less ! I shall continue to learn and research.

I think Topalov played it vs Kramnik
I think Shirov has played white side of it.

will it work against IM? i wanna defeat eric rosen
I've always known the rules, I've dabbled, but I'm really trying to improve snd get better. Keep up with the great content sir!
Love it. Thanks for the video!
It could just be me, but I love how he says most players just pull up stockfish
from what ive learned in my elo most players actually play Nc6 after I take there pawn (900 elo)
Im 300 on blitz and they always play Nxe4 and every person plays the petrov in that elo is it some fucking infestation or smth

Disappointing that you only chose accommodating moves from Black
Love this, but my friend always brings out NC6 on 3. I have not seen a video explaining that
On white With the bishop on c4 I just love to have the knight on e5 but it is really hard to get the knight on e5 only with your bishop out tho
Nice Tactics
Bronstein commented favorably on this gambit in his book on open games.
Hey Igor, can I play this in an OTB Tournament with 20 min Time Control
Thx!
Thanks 👍 👍 👍
Suggestions for 5. ...g6
seems pretty strong.
Can you still take on F3 if white plays Stafford gambit (Nc6 instead of d6) on move 3? Would it still work?
This was a good question !
I've just tried. Amazing. Black doesn't know what to do...Mate in 22 moves
what if they just go Kg8 after pawn d4?
2022 bro its been an year already?
but why we cannot do pawn to d5
W cat in the back
Massive W
Black can take pawn back right away lol
Analysis

Most chess players is a cat lover Lol😂
ikr
btw, far too many White games and not enough Black games
... and as someone else commented, NO notation

Are there any traps white can play when black tries to go from the Petrov to the Stafford gambit line
