Thanks for posting - great close up film quality for this era. Turpin had amazing ahthletic gifts. hose long punches that he manages to deliver with speed and power would have troubled any middleweight of any era.
You can physically see the emotion in turpin, each close up the cam gets to his face - the sheer anger in himself to hold back on knowing that hes knockin out his best friend. One of if not THEE most incredible experience in an emotional fight boxing has and ever will see... The wink he gives him when he kos him to the ground...explicit.
Turpin did a number on Robinson in their 1st fight and even though he didn't train well for the return he still give Sugar Ray fits,On his night he was almost too good,to do what he did to the man most pick as the G.O.A.T. P4P,Sugar Ray Robinson, was astonishing, when you can be called the Middleweight Champion of the World in an era of Tony Zale,Rocky Graziano,Ray Robinson,Jake LaMotta,Bobo Ollson,Marcel Cerdan,Gene Fulmer, you really did have to be special, extra special. He made the sugar man look like a novice sometimes. The return was stopped too early. If that was Zale,LaMotta or Graziano who was stopped after just splitting Robinsons face/eye open ,there would have been a riot.He was a tough SOB.The mob ripped his title away from him.But just for explosive excitement Randolph Turpin was the man.RIP
@Neil Hodge I wouldn't say that Turpin didn't train for the rematch but there were definitely more distractions. Also the warning signs were there towards the end of their first fight as Robinson was starting to figure Turpin out.
@aaron pryor He wasn't 'KTFO', the fight was stopped by the referee. You say Turpin was a bum. Robinson said he was one of the best boxers he ever fought. I think Robinson knew just a little bit more about it than you do.
Turpin was a great fighter, he went easy on Cockell in the early rounds because they were mates but when he opens up you can see that every punch has Cockell in trouble, and this is the man who went 9 rounds with Rocky Marciano! What wouldnt Turpin do to todays fighters?
Turpin is FAST. Fast hands and fast at suddenly getting in close from longer range. I can see why he gave Robinson hell. Robinson had trouble with fighters his own height or taller.
Turpin had an ungainly style of fighting. He was often off balance when throwing his punches. He threw a lot of roundhouse punches from strange angles. Having said that he achieved great things during the course of his boxing career.
Rare fight, I remember this as being a first round loss for Turpin. Nice surprise, think he was much better than he’s remembered as being. One of Englands greatest ever. Watch 64 day hero documentary about him. Sad story
Thanks for loading this piece of history. Friend of mine knew Don really well and he would tell me stories of Don's fight with Rocky Marciano. Randolph Turpin was also an inspiration to me personally. God bless them both. Blessings
Randy Turpin didn't look like the same fighter the second time he fought Sugar Ray Robinson. It's like he didn't have the same jab, didn't throw right leads, and seemed to lack combinations. In this fight with Don Cockell, he looks like a complete fighter.
@walter bonner I agree. Turpin didn't seem to fight as aggressively in the rematch and let Robinson set the pace. But in this fight with Cockell Turpin is often wide open when throwing combinations and Robinson would have exploited that. Although he's impressive here, he isn't as good as he was in the first fight with Robinson.
6:31 Surely it isn't the referee's place to tell the boxers to pick up the pace. The referee's responsibility is to ensure the boxers don't commit fouls. The boxers can stand in the middle of the ring and blow kisses at each other if they want to although it won't do their career much good.
This was probably the last great performance from Turpin. He simply wasnt emotionally equipped to cope with success, perhaps not with life either? When he beat Sugar Ray he was great, but the yanks recognised his fragile mental state and interest in women and played on it when he went to America for the second fight. Forget the Olson match. Olson was good but the Randy he met was a shadow. After sparring with a retired Randy, Terry Downes said Turpins body shots were murder.
@Kohl423 I agree that Turpin had emotional issues but I'm not sure the Americans would have had the opportunity to recognise this. I don't know if Adele Daniels was some kind of honeytrap or someone he happened to meet when he was in America. But I think Turpin's life would have ended badly even if he beat Robinson in the rematch. I don't like watching their second fight because it's the beginning of the end.
He does look impressive here. I wonder why then Turpin couldn't beat Bobo Olson and got knocked out by Gordon Wallace. It comes down to styles, styles play a big a part on the outcome of a fight. Thanks for posting this video.
Cockell had trouble keeping his weight within the light-heavy limits. He was more comfortable and stronger at heavyweight. He always battled with weight issues.
he actually had a huge problem that manifested later in his life with his thyroid..he even developed man boobs! he had a great body adn then it all went to pudge despite his training hard
I have never seen this fight before, Randy Turpin was excellent. I like Rocky Marciano and believe he was an excellent champion. This fight between Turpin and Cockell, however, hardens my opinion that Muhammad Ali would have beaten Rocky if they had met in their primes. Turpin, a middleweight, beats Cockell as comfortably as Marciano did. A fight between Ali and Cockell would be a mismatch. Ali would be too big, fast, skillful and durable for Rocky.
Marciano retired 49-0 for a reason. He took on all comers, never sucked anyone and beat them all. Beat up a few who were never the same after. Your thinking is all wrong. No one could beat a puncher who continuously comes at you for 15 rounds.
@@STEVEREEVES4444 Ali was back after a 3 year 8 month layoff and only two fights before the first fight with Frazier. Ali beat Frazier twice so was 2-1 up over Frazier. Frazier was demolished by Foreman. I honestly think that Foreman would have beaten Marciano in a similar way that he beat Frazier and Norton. Ali K.O.ed Foreman.
Turpin was one of the best fighters to ever come from Great Britain and Don Cockell was one of the bravest . great and rare post .Thank you
Turpin looks like a true gentleman, a genuine sportsmanlike fighter. You can see it as well in his fights with Robinson.
Cockell is one of Britain's most underated fighters- he faced some of the biggest names of the day- Marciano, Turpin, La Starza....
Truth. He stood his ground against Marciano! That was a feat in itself.
Thanks for posting this. Amazing to think that 3 years after this TKO by a middleweight, Cockell went in with Marciano!
Yh amazing performance that was too against Marciano!
Henry Byrd
From what I heard don cockell had a thyroid
condition that caused his weight gain. He is very light on his feet here though.
I have an old Boxing news that covers that fight. Great effort from Cockell.
And got KO'D in 8 round by the Rock.
Turpin wasn't a Middle weight on this night,I bet he weighed around 175 lbs.and he was chiseled, no fat on him at all.
Thanks for posting - great close up film quality for this era.
Turpin had amazing ahthletic gifts. hose long punches that he manages to deliver with speed and power would have troubled any middleweight of any era.
Nice to see the great quality of the video so future generations can see these great fighters.
Brilliant, the great Randolph Turpin!
what a wonderful video...absolute superb...
catching the turpin wink before he finishes the job looked very cool...

@aaron pryor The first Turpin vs Robinson wasn't close. Turpin won comfortably.
@Neil Hodge I wouldn't say that Turpin didn't train for the rematch but there were definitely more distractions. Also the warning signs were there towards the end of their first fight as Robinson was starting to figure Turpin out.

Cockell went 8 rounds and about 20 seconds with Rocky.but who's counting.
Turpin what a talent, read his biography, worth a read. My dads favorite fighter
That wink said everything. ‘No hard feelings mate, but this is it! Pure class.
Turpin had a wicked left hook, wow.and he was really in shape, very chiseled. I don't know how he made middle weight.
Turpin is FAST.

Turpin amazing speed
Sheer class from Turpin surely one of the best this country will ever see!
would turpin have beaten carl froch ? i reckon he wouldve

Randy Turpin was good the best U K boxer ever
Thanks ,for posting this 😊
Turpin had a strange style but was very strong. Cockell was an excellent light heavyweight.
NoGoodBoyo1000 I agree, great puncher, good movement but doesn’t tuck chin in and squares up when opening up on the inside.
Rare fight, I remember this as being a first round loss for Turpin. Nice surprise, think he was much better than he’s remembered as being. One of Englands greatest ever. Watch 64 day hero documentary about him. Sad story
Randy sure was a class boxer. Unlucky to be around at the same time as Sugar Ray and a few others.
I had no idea turpin was this good. RIP Champ
Those were the days.
@chunkyscotty yes he was a true legend. My grandad new the turpin brothers, they were only from leamington, just down the road from us
sad how he died, he was a good fighter.
Great finish by Turpin and Cockell could take a punch. Had no answer to that one-two in the 11th though.
I think Don would be boiling himself down to make the weight due to his glandular problems by the time of this fight
People who say Cockell was no good dont know shit about boxing!
Be one of the best around today no question about it
What size were those gloves? 4 oz?..They look like mittens!
Turpin winking at Cockell after putting him down...

Anyone have any idea if rest of this show would have been filmed? On the bill was Gordon Hazell .v. Joe Meseko. Be great to find it. Thanks

On this show was Bristol's Gordon Hazell who fought south african Joe Maseko
does anyone have an idea where I could get film of it?
Thanks
Imagine feeding tubby Cockell to Marciano. What a mistake.
4:49 - 4:54 in 'round 4' is the same action as 5:06 - 5:11 in 'round 6' but from a different angle.
Looks like Turpin didn’t want to hurt Don. I reckon Turpin should have fought Marciano.
