Hey Nick! I love this video of yours and found it super helpful in taking my YNAB setup to the next level. Wondering if you would consider creating an updated version now that this is a year old. I'm sure Toolkit has some awesome updated features. Thanks again!
I second the request for updated favorite toolbar settings. I just found you on youtube recently so was trying to do this while watching the video but noticed that the features are different and noticed this video is from 2019. Still very helpful. Hopefully you'll be able to do an updated version. Thank you for your time!
Wow, I nornally think the YNAB web version GUI is like a Toyota Camry or Avalon. Smooth, efficient, nice! This toolkit turns it into a Dodge Charger!!! And you, Nick, are the race car driving instructor on how to use it!!!! Thanks.
Hello Nick, I started using YNAB 16 days ago and to be honest, I was lost a little bit at the beginnnig. I did some research on the web and I have found your well detailed tutorial videos which helped me a lot in setting up the budget, defining goals and so on. Now, we are budgeting together with my wife and we can't wait the end of the month to see the results! Keep up the good work, you should be a member of the official YNAB Team! We really appreciate your support, thank you!
Hey Nick, great video, super helpful... however, I'm curious if you'll be doing an update to this as it's 3yrs old and some of these settings I'm not finding anymore in the toolkit settings. It does seem like some of these are now native functionality to the app as well which is cool... thx! Your videos are a godsend to us YNAB newbies ha!
Thank you for your YNAB videos. They are helping me make the transition from Everydollar to YNAB. Getting paid once a month, I am finding YNAB to work better for budgeting for me.
Knocked it out of the park! Well organized, a lot of information presented succinctly. I can't even imagine how long it took you to prep for this one. Thank you!
You are back! Yeah! I've been telling anyone that will listen about your videos. Love the YNAB help but also others. I've been preaching the "don't" vs. "can't" philosophy to my husband, kids and friends. Thanks!
haha yup! Back in action :) Thanks so much for telling folks about us, that means a ton. And yes, the Don't vs. Can't thing has been huge for me! Really appreciate you watching.
Thanks Nick! You just saved me days of trial and error testing each feature. When I tell friends and family about YNAB I always recommend they skip their tutorials and go straight to yours as they are much more comprehensive and useful!
Thank you for all your YNAB videos, you have made it much easier to understand and use. Just past four month mark totally using the software and I am already budgeting a month in advance, and your videos are a large reason for my success. So thank you!
I have been using YNAB for a few years now, love it but always thought it could do with more reports analyses on your spending's. This is a game changer, thanks mate!
OMG I’m so happy that you did a video on this. I saw that you mentioned it in one of your recent videos and I was like I hope Nick does a top features video. Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!
Nick - Thanks so much for this video!! #20 Toggle Master Category list open/close has changed already and is now "Category Solo Mode and Toggle Master Categories"
I'm obsessed with your videos! I'm always touting YNAB to friends but with your tips and explanations I know I'm missing out on a ton of features. Adding a one-on-one session to my wish farm!
This toolkit is so handy! Thank you for the overview. So many of these features are ones I wished were in YNAB when I first started messing around with it. So cool to discover that there's a way to resize the side menu and so many other things I wished I could do!
This was great. So many of these things were things I wish YNAB had but looking through the toolkit was so overwhelming to me. I actually had asked a question about the Underfunded and amount to be budgeted thing in the reddit forum a few weeks ago and now that you showed me the total goals that is super helpful b/c like you were saying I have gone in and created tons of goals but honestly I have no idea if the total goals was higher or lower than my actual income each month.
The thing I like about the “paid off credit card” feature is when I redeem cash back rewards. If I have $10 in rewards, I enter it as “to be budgeted” then the toolkit shows me that I have too much budgeted for that card. I click “rectify difference” and it adjusts the budget appropriately. My credit card budgets are in the negative every month.
The CC Assist is primarily to adjust for purchase reward credits, reconciliation adjustments, or outgoing transfers (as with some reimbursements, gift card accounts, mixed funding splits). As you say, overspending should be fixed in the spending category. Great video!
So happy to see a new video from you on YNAB! I am excited to try out this Toolkit. I really like the Goal column. It makes reviewing the overall budget so much easier!
Thanks so much for sharing this! I love the collapse category feature and was trying to figure out how you did that. Lots of great features. Hopefully they’ll make one for mobile soon too.
This is very helpful - thanks so much! Given there have been a lot of changes since last year to the Toolkit for YNAB settings, and YNAB itself, it may be a good idea to do an update. The goal indicators have changed a lot, for example haha. I really love all of your videos!
Great to see your videos again Nick! Awesome video and info, really like the toolkit and now I have more knowledge for using it! Thank you Nick for making budgeting way less stressful.
I really like you videos. Explains a lot about the program. I just really miss the desktop version, just don’t really care for the web version. Don’t have good internet. But thank you for sharing your awesome videos.
Dude great videos! I don't think I can stomach giving up safari for chrome in order to use this. Pretty cool though, hopefully YNAB will install some of the stuff by default at some point.
Hi Nick, thanks for this video. Super helpful. I can’t figure out how at the top of the screen to look like yours specifically the numbers. The overspent, underfunded etc. Can you point me in the right direction?
Another really helpful video, thank you! Love being able to see my goals, AND the total monthly goals! I've been ynabing for a few years and comfortably live within my budget - so I want to fully fund my goals every month, this really helps. Oh, and running balance .. as an prior ynab4 users I REALLY missed that.
Thank you for all these videos! My husband and I have now started for the 3rd time to budget and after watching many of your videos to get us started, I think we understand it all so much better! Question: I was just adding the toolkit and when I did the Goals feature all it put was a small S, D, T with no amount like on your screen. Wondering why they same feature looks different and what else maybe I need to do to see those goal totals in the column. Thanks!
So I went and added a bunch of the toolkit features (LOVE THEM!) and I have this grey line that runs down the right hand side of "Activity" column. If the inspector is resized to a smaller amount it looks fine but with a smaller screen, the grey line impedes on the number in the activity column. Is there a way to get rid of this line? I don't see it on yours!
Hey Kelly! So that's one of the toolkit settings, I don't remember which one off the top of my head. Maybe pacing?? But there's a setting on the budget screen (I belive one of the dropdowns) that adds that gray line to remind you how far along in the month you are. But like you, I find it annoying, so I keep it turned off :)
Great video Nick, as always! I'm most excited about the Goals column, but it appears there is a bug in latest release. FYI to anyone installing for first time, check github.com/toolkit-for-ynab/toolkit-for-ynab/issues if something doesn't work quite right. Thank you Nick!
Nick, you have helped me a lot over the years. I was wondering is there anyway I can get the YNAB TOOLKIT on my iPad Pro? I realize it is only available on a computer. But I heard it is now available on Safari. Frustrated Joni
I am loving your videos Nick. I'm very new to YNAB and for the first time in a long I'm actually excited about my finances :-). I can't seem to find "Toggle all master category groups open/close" in the Toolkit setup. Has this been removed or has it been replaced with something else as I really want this feature? Thanks
@@oldmaninthemirror Right, it's not, but it has a similar setup for how it works with browser extensions. But it's my understanding that Safari, like most apple products, doesn't play well with others in this case.
Can you export the JSON export text on your YNAB toolkit extension so we can load these settings? Else you have 27,000 people manually ticking each of the 22 settings wasting so much time, when it could just be a case of pasting in text into the settings box and it all applying
Do you think there is any security risk using a third party tool with a budget using linked accounts? With unlinked accounts it’s a no brainer to add all these features but I’m reluctant with my actually bank info linked and the Developers being unrelated to ynab. Not sure why ynab doesn’t have these features in the first place!
Good question! So there's actually a really good thread on this on reddit here: www.reddit.com/r/ynab/comments/b2qs93/is_toolkit_for_ynab_safe/ And it boils down to: The toolkit can only see what's actually on the page, so once your imports are setup, they shouldn't be able to access your username/password because you aren't inputting them each time. I personally haven't worried too much about it, but that could be an oversight from me. Like anything, there's always a security risk, and a tradeoff for convenience. Just a matter of whether or not you personally feel comfortable with it. I would completely understand if you didn't want to.
The toolkit code is freely available, no one sounding any alarms. Interestingly, YNAB's code is not and they forward your bank password to another company to gather your transaction info.
I don't believe so, no. I was reading about how Safari makes their plugins difficult to work with, so they have to re-create a ton of stuff. Since it's all free and open source, I think it's only Chrome, Brave, and Firefox.
thank you for this!!! do you have any idea why my goal number and type is crowded way to the left and not under the "goal" heading? I wish I could insert a picture to show you, but essentially, the goal amount isn't lined up under the goal heading????
Hey, Nick, I notice as you go through examples that the UI in your "inspector" section (right rail) has a % indicator visual--is that an extension or add-in you've used to get that? My YNAB account doesn't display that feature....
Thanks for posting this awesome video. Question on widget #16 the reference shows that monthly goal targets should show an M in the column. However after adding them, this one shows up as an S. Is this a bug or did something change and the reference information on the widget now incorrect?
Hey Greg! So I made this video RIGHT before YNAB updated their goal types and then the Toolkit folks made that change. So unfortunately, my video is just showing old info. But the "s" is correct. It stands for "spending" with the new goal types in YNAB.
@@mappedoutmoney Thanks for that clarification. Just started my YNAB Journey (was using Mint for personal). Loving it so far. Still using Xero for businesses but looking if can use YNAB next year for the businesses. Wish it had an invoicing and time tracking function add-on.
@@gregheard6024 Awesome. Glad that helped. I totally understand that want for time and invoicing. I personally just use other tools for those, but I get why it's convenient to have them combined if you can. Happy YNABing my friend!
I don't think you can add multiple currencies to the same budget :( You can definitely do different currencies, but I think only one per budget unfortunately.
Hi Nick, Thank you so much for making all these videos on YNAB. It has helped me and others greatly on understanding the program. Question, on the toolkit, when enabling the total monthly goal tab to show on the right side of the screen, mine seems to only pick up my goals for Monthly contribution and not my Spending Goals, showing the number on Total Monthly Goal to show a lot lower than my Underfunded that YNAB automatically gives you. Any Guidance would be great! thank you! Andy
Hey Andy! Great question, unfortunately, mine is doing the same. Because the toolkit is a third party extension and not YNAB, I believe that it's been messed up ever since YNAB released their new goals a couple of weeks ago. I think the toolkit folks just haven't been able to update that feature yet. So not much to do right now, except go back to the old way of looking at the "underfunded" button instead of total monthly goals. But just know, I'm in the same boat with you my friend.

Nick I've found your videos on YNAB incredibly helpful, it would have taken me months to get to where i have in days with your help. however i have a problem in that - im using the toolkit, - the Total Activity and Total Monthly Goals figures on the RHS are way too low and dont seem to relate to anything. Any ideas how i can suss out whats going on?
Hey Bill! I've noticed that the Total Monthly Goals for the toolkit has been off slightly since YNAB released it's new updated goals features (a month after I made this video lol). So If you're using the new "monthly" or "by date" goals at all, your total monthly goals are going to be off unfortunately until the toolkit guys get it fixed. As for total activity, that should be working. You're sure it doesn't seem to relate to the total amounts you see in the activity columns for your categories? If not, I would definitely reach out to YNAB support about that.
I just read on their GitHub that with the new goals, it's only calculating the Build Your Savings goals, not the Spending Goals. Hopefully they'll fix it soon!
The toolkit only adds up the "Build Your Savings" goals. It doesn't include the "Plan Your Spending" goals. You can fool it by changing each goal type one at a time. Really a bummer!
Nick, I don't understand why I don't have a "Goals" column like you do in my YNAB interface and I can't find the info anywhere. I'd really love to be able to see my goals displayed like that right next to everything else. Help?
Thanks for the great video. I have added the YNAB Toolkit and turned on the Total Monthly Goals feature. However, the Total Monthly Goal amount for the current month is $733, which is way too low (total should be in the thousands, not hundreds). I have monthly goals set up for each of my categories. I'm assuming I have set up something incorrectly...
I have done that same and I think that YNAB has changed the Monthly Funding Goals to be Monthly Spending goals. Goals are marked with an "S" instead of an "M" for me. I may have done something incorrectly myself.
@@slugore Thanks so much for your reply. I think you've just solved my mystery. Most of my goals are also set up as Monthly Spending goals ("S" type). When I changed a couple of them to Monthly Contribution goals ("M" type), they are now included in the Toolkit's Total Monthly Goals figure. According to YNAB's documentation, the Monthly Contribution goal is described as a "Build Your Savings" goal, which is why I chose the Monthly goal, which is a "Plan Your Spending" goal. Evidently, Toolkit is pulling only the "M" type. Guess I'll change all of mine from "S" to "M" type because seeing the Total Monthly Goal amount is extremely helpful to me. Thanks, again, for your help.
I am having a problem where the Toolkit settings are not persistent. Every time I start YNAB, the column widths, the "Inspector Width" setting goes back to default, etc. Has anybody else had this problem, and if so, how did you fix it?
@@mappedoutmoney Maybe you can do a video on how to undo something you budgeted for... It seems like once you add dollars to something it cant be undone without putting that money someplace else... I mistakenly budgeted double the amount for my property tax and now cant delete it.
craigslistrr good question! You should be able to just change the number in the budgeted column to whatever you need it to be. That will move the excess back to to be budgeted. Or you can click the amount in available and move some back to to be budgeted. Let me know if that helps!

So glad that the video was helpful for you Kazza! Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Massive kudos for this vid. Decided to give it a try today.
Thanks Jerry! Glad it was helpful for you :)
I've been dying to figure out what feature puts in the goal amounts. Thanks!
Hello Nick!
Can you make an updated video for this for 2022 please?
Thank you for all these videos! My husband and I have now started for the 3rd time to budget and after watching many of your videos to get us started, I think we understand it all so much better! Question: I was just adding the toolkit and when I did the Goals feature all it put was a small S, D, T with no amount like on your screen. Wondering why they same feature looks different and what else maybe I need to do to see those goal totals in the column. Thanks!
Awesome video, thanks Nick.
fsmoura no problem! I’m super glad to hear that the video was helpful for you :)
This was great! just implemented many of them!
Great Sherry! Glad it was helpful :)
hey! long time no see. good to see you!
Hey Kari! Thanks for noticing. I'm glad to be back :) Been a crazy Summer!
Hope you're well.
This changes everything! 🤯🤯🤯
Awesome Yari! So glad it was helpful for you :)
Great video Nick, as always! I'm most excited about the Goals column, but it appears there is a bug in latest release. FYI to anyone installing for first time, check github.com/toolkit-for-ynab/toolkit-for-ynab/issues if something doesn't work quite right. Thank you Nick!
Thanks Jared! And yes, definitely check that the issues. The goals column went haywire just earlier this week. I'm sure they'll get it fixed soon!
Nick, you have helped me a lot over the years. I was wondering is there anyway I can get the YNAB TOOLKIT on my iPad Pro? I realize it is only available on a computer. But I heard it is now available on Safari.
Frustrated Joni
Nick, thanks for all the great help. On the toolkit, there is an option to add a budget column but not every line item is populated, why is that?
I am loving your videos Nick. I'm very new to YNAB and for the first time in a long I'm actually excited about my finances :-). I can't seem to find "Toggle all master category groups open/close" in the Toolkit setup. Has this been removed or has it been replaced with something else as I really want this feature? Thanks
That's ok. I found it. It's now called "Category Solo Mode and Toggle Master Categories" in the Budget screen setup. :-)
Hey Nick I really love the videos they help a-lot. I downloaded this extension a few weeks ago and do not see #20. Anyway you could help me with that?
Nick..the toolkit works..I think..for all chromium based browsers..I use Brave browser and Toolkit works well.
Oh nice! So it's really just Safari then that it doesn't work for. Thanks for the heads up Robert. Really appreciate it.
Nick True - MappedOutMoney don't know about that..for example I don't know if toolkit works with Firefox which..I don't think..is chromium based
@@oldmaninthemirror Right, it's not, but it has a similar setup for how it works with browser extensions. But it's my understanding that Safari, like most apple products, doesn't play well with others in this case.
Nick True - MappedOutMoney also..none of the toolkit niceness works on the mobile app which is unfortunate
@@oldmaninthemirror Totally. I wish it did, both wouldn't that be nice!
Can you export the JSON export text on your YNAB toolkit extension so we can load these settings? Else you have 27,000 people manually ticking each of the 22 settings wasting so much time, when it could just be a case of pasting in text into the settings box and it all applying
This is a great video. Thanks Nick!!
Thanks for watching Greg! Super glad you got something out of it.
Thank you for great videos and advice!
Absolutely Veronica! Thanks so much for watching :)
So there's actually a really good thread on this on reddit here: www.reddit.com/r/ynab/comments/b2qs93/is_toolkit_for_ynab_safe/
And it boils down to: The toolkit can only see what's actually on the page, so once your imports are setup, they shouldn't be able to access your username/password because you aren't inputting them each time.
Another great video, thanks Nick!
Toggle All Master Categories Open Close is missing from the "Budget Screen" options. Was it moved ?
It Is now named Category Solo Mode and Toggle Master Categories which is a drop down option.
Where is the SAVE button currently? I've made changes to the toolkit, but can't find where to save the changes.
Will this be coming to Safari any time?
I don't believe so, no. I was reading about how Safari makes their plugins difficult to work with, so they have to re-create a ton of stuff. Since it's all free and open source, I think it's only Chrome, Brave, and Firefox.
thank you for this!!!
do you have any idea why my goal number and type is crowded way to the left and not under the "goal" heading? I wish I could insert a picture to show you, but essentially, the goal amount isn't lined up under the goal heading????
These are fantastic! Thank you, Thank you!!
No problem! So glad that they're helpful.
Is there an option for different currencies? I'm living in Norway and it would be helpful. Thanks!
I don't think you can add multiple currencies to the same budget :( You can definitely do different currencies, but I think only one per budget unfortunately.
@@mappedoutmoney OK. Thank you! I might have worded that poorly. I meant can I do the whole thing in NOK which you did answer, so thanks a bunch!
@@kristenjoymoss7897 Yes! You should be able to do that in the main YNAB even without the toolkit! Check it out in the YNAB settings :)
the Spending by Payee report is my favorite of all the reports... for some reason the View Zero as Empty option is not working for me
Hi Nick,
Thank you so much for making all these videos on YNAB.
@@mappedoutmoney Thanks for the reply! Happy Holidays and best wishes!
@@Andy-px7px You too man! Good luck YNABing!
Great video!!
Thanks Dave! Appreciate you watching.

Dude! This is killer thanks for sharing.
@@KarenCooley Bingo :)
Thanks Karen for confirming what we were thinking!
@@mappedoutmoney Thanks for creating such amazing and useful videos! :)
The toolkit only adds up the "Build Your Savings" goals. It doesn't include the "Plan Your Spending" goals. You can fool it by changing each goal type one at a time. Really a bummer!
Great video! Thank you so much :)
Thanks Marc!
More stuff to learn.
Hopefully the video helped!
No toolkit for apps.😢
No Safari 😳 😞
The total monthly goals just says $0.00 even though I have all my goals setup.. hmm
BackCountryBob that's odd but I've noticed it doing that every now and again. Does it work once you refresh?
@@mappedoutmoney unfortunately no :( I just started using ynab yesterday, maybe in time it will fix itself
Could you talk any faster?
