The United States men’s 4x100m relay team led off by individual 100m champion Christian Coleman and anchored by individual 200m champion Noah Lyles was always going to have a chance of gold - assuming they avoided the fallibility that has often dogged their nation’s sprint relay ambitions.
This they did as they transported the baton all the way round in total security in 37.10 - the second-fastest time ever run behind the 36.84 recorded by the Jamaican team that Usain Bolt anchored to victory at the London 2012 Olympic Games. It also beat the US record of 37.38 set at the 2015 World Relays.
Despite losing their title, the British quartet was also left smiling as they put it all together to take silver in a European record of 37.36, eclipsing the time of 37.47 they had run in securing a home victory in London’s Olympic Stadium two years ago.

The Jamaicans set the bar of excellence in sprinting. Now that whole jargon of being a nation specialized in a particular sport is out the window. Other countries will eventually catch up to you if you don't continue to do what you know well. It's just like soccer. Nobody cares anymore if Brazil has won the world cup five times. They haven't been the best team since the days of Pele or the other Brazilian soccer legends. This doesn't apply to only sports, but in basic economics.

You're wrong. The commentator made a mistake. 37.10 is not the national record for the USA. The national record is 37.04, silver medal in 2012 London Olympics. That's their best time. The commentator craps without real facts.

@Mthwakazian Mthwakazian The fact is that America always "does well" in relay when they are no Jamaicans. they have a saying that "pressure burst pipe" and whenever a Jamaican team runs against the USA, they always seem to falter. There was no team in this race that the US was afraid of.

Lyles has all the top end speed in the world. Instead of slowing down at the end he just keeps going faster.

I don't know what's more impressive? , the fact that Italy's olympic gold medal time would have finished fourth , or the fact that you had the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 9th, and 11th fastest relay teams ever all in the same race !!.

Finally. The question is can they improve on their time in the coming years? Ppl talkin about using Gatlin again but forgettin that he will get slower and that retirement may b around the corner. I mean he has been competing since 2004. It may also b argued that what he is chasing (redemption + forgiveness) is best acheived off the track. He will be forever tainted. The US team will always b great no matter who they line up, their depth of sprinters is so impressive.

Six of the seven finalist teams finished under 38 seconds. Those athletes were moving out!! Clean handoffs, superb sprinting and impeccable timing made for a great race. The team of Great & Britain and Northern Ireland put forth a valiant effort (new European record in fact), but they're probably inconsolable because despite a record setting performance, they still lost to the yanks.

The anchor for Japan looks sweet in slow mo. Love how Lyles runs. He's moving. Reminds me of how horse move when they are races. He's using every part of his body. Wishing this brotha a very successful career. Cant wit to watch. ❤

Gotta admit I was surprised to see them so far ahead when they came out of the curve. And there 3rd exchange was fantastic. They went from about 3m behind US to almost 1m. But GB did have a great anchor and beat em to the end. Good race all around.

I love American team so much, the team work is amazing, always there at the top 3 for every sprint.both male and female.
It's a new era in sprinting. The reign of the Jamaican men is over. But for how long? It really feels like a 'they came, they saw and they conquered' type of story for Jamaica. They dominated from 2007-2016/17. That was a huge reign. May never be matched again.

2007? Tyson Gay and the USA was the best in 2007 that changed in 2008. 2008-2016 was Jamaicas time.
@@youllknowtrain8848 yes, you're right. Usain didn't burst until 2008. Tyson was good in 2007, but remember Asafa Powell was breaking the record before Bolt. He tied it once and broke it once if memory is correct. I think Maurice Green was the last American 100m record holder.

The time isn't over. It's a recycling process. Jamaica has always been in the mix for male sprinting way b4 bolt, asafa, Blake etc and it will happen again.
This time was once a World record in Usain Bolt, and Powell’s era.
Japan have the potential to be champions. Quite often they're in the top 3 or top 4. We could well be seeing them on the top of the podium. Exciting eras to come in sprinting. As sad as I am about the Bolt/Blake/Gatlin/Gay era ending, this is now the next generation. It's awesome.

In 07' as ten and eleven year olds respectively, both Lyle and Coleman probably dreamed of being part of ongoing future successful 100m -200m and 4x100m gold medal teams, what they could not know at the time is that they would be the duo to end the USA's 12 year drought(8 consecutive global meets-3 Olympics 5 Worlds)of not winning gold in the 100m -200m and 4x100m at the same Global meet.
Great run by USA but big props to Japan their anchor leg was moving!
I'm here after the debacle in Tokyo just to make sure that I didn't imagine this race.

@@chamindujanith6337 I'm aware...The B team always runs the preliminary round. You can rest your stars and still put together a team that makes tactical sense. Terrible decision-making/coaching led to the debacle not the quality of the sprinters.

@@ronnieyoung2075 Sir the track is very fast, nothin to do with Lyles special ability, although he is a precocious talent. U saw when Shellyann Fraser jogged 10.80 in the first round at Doha? If u listened the commentary...watched the 400m women or 400mh women or any other race, u wud realise that the track at the Khalifah international stadium was built specifically to be fast.

Japan is good at relays, like amazing at relays. They won silver in Rio, and none of their sprinters even made it to the 100m final. They have great exchanges

Gatlin turns 39 in February of 2021, while Mike Rogers who is slow as hell turns 36. Unless, the U.S comes up with a stronger 2nd and 3rd leg in Tokyo, Britain stands a great chance of winning the gold.
Now, 2 months later, since your last post, I'll throw a couple of names at you to ponder for next year: Michael Norman, 9.86 (2020), and a resurging Trayvon Brommel 9.91 (2020). Let's hope COVID is under control in 2021 with an available vaccine, stay safe.

@66fredo99 la France That's a very, very good point you made. Bromell on 1st leg, Norman on 2nd leg, Baker on 3rd leg, and Lyles on 4th leg, but ahhhhhhhhhhh I still can't see a gold there.
The american record that was removed in 2012 was 37:04 which was 2nd to the current wr by Jamaica because of tyson gay failed the drug test. Gatlin was also on that team
Some has said when Justin Gatlin ultimately retires after this last Olympics that the young Track Star phenom from UGA, Mathew Boling may very well be the best fill in for USA 4x100 team and could be that missing piece for the young USA team that could very well break the Jamaican world record holders of that event for many years to come!

I feel like they have mid 36's in grasp, for sure. Gatlin to Rogers and Rogers to Lyles were both bunched up handoffs. Definitely room for improvement, but a great execution all around.

Firstly the announcer is wrong this was not the second fastest 4×100 race, in 2011 jamaica clocked 37.04 to break the world record and then in 2012 they clocked 36.84 to break that record,I think jamaica broke and set the world 4 times maybe all the times were faster than the 37.10 these guys ran.
