You are definitely growing as a formulator. I remember not too long ago you were trying to figure out which solvent to use with salicylic acid. Congrats! 👏 Let's see if you'll be working with lactic acid (like a lotion or moisturizer) and possibly formulating sunscreens.
Thank you so much! Yes it took so long to figure it out. I’ve used lactic acid tons of times, I have a few formulas using it here on my channel. Haven’t done a moisturizer though, but that’s a great idea! I have a video on my channel discussing why I won’t be making a sunscreen though.
@@TaraLeee yeah, literally sunscreen formulations might be really hard to make. Companies might keep it as a big secret and we can tell by how pricey sunscreens are

Awesome video SA, there are many people who don't want to mess with it, because it's regulated. However, it's worth the hassel. It's a great ingredient, and should be used more often. The process is a little daunting, but the people at the FDA are nice and will walk you through the whole process. If you read there page on the website, it sounds complicated, it's not as bad as the printed version sounds, lol!
TARALEE! Killin' IT! This is beautiful, I cannot wait to try it. I can't believe I am saying this (because I still feel so much younger than I am), but I will be 40 this year and it is really beginning to show in my skin. I have tons of little benign, but obnoxious dry patches all over my skin. They are invisible until I put on a self-tan, and the pigment collects around them and I'm left with unsightly little spots all over my arms and legs. I'm really curious to see if consistent use of AHA/BHA-containing lotions will improve the texture of my skin. I'm really excited to try this and see if it might restore some of my youthfulness. Thank you so much, love all your content!
Great video. I love how the propanedial dissolved the SA, however I did not have the poly suga mulse D9, so I used Polysorbate. And that ruined the the toner...... It was all cloudy and the SA re-crystalized. Thanks for sharing.
Liquid salicylic acid is so much easier to work with! FSS has liquid willow bark extract 10% and 20%. My toner formula is: 10% willow bark extract (use 20% SA equivalent for 2% SA content) 0.5% liquid germall plus 5% propanediol 1,3 2% green tea extract (or any other botanical extract with antioxidants - I use this in the morning and it's good to have your antioxidants on before exposure to the oxidative stress of the day) Water to 100% I adjust the pH to 3.0-3.9 with lactic acid.
Liquid version probably would be easier, but I wanted to use the powder version. Also Willow bark extract isn’t as strong as salicylic acid. They are compared to one another often but definitely not at strong.
@@TaraLeee Okay yeah you were totally right about salicyn vs salicylic acid! But! I still found something easy to work with! It's a 40% salicylic acid solution from MakingCosmetics. I paid about $14 for 2.3 fl oz. I know you were more interested in the powder, but it would be a nice option for intermediate formulators.

Just wondering…is the toner supposed to be used with the moisturizer? Since each has 2% salicylic acid, wouldn’t it be too harsh especially for acne prone or sensitive skin?

I dissolve salicylic acid in propylene glycol and add polysorbate 20 but after adding water it starts to crystalize. which solubilizers I could use to keep it soluble in water?
Don't you reduce the effectiveness of the salicyl acid when you balance the pH? Because if I understand the chemistry behind it correctly, the pH only rises because part of the SA gets converted to sodium salicylate. And while this substance does do sth., it's not as effective as SA. Can you please elaborate on why you do it and how to keep the loss of effectiveness at at minimum?
The final pH is still extremely low and will not disrupt the salicylic acid. You would have to raise it higher for that to happen. You have to raise the pH a bit in order for it to even be safe to put on the skin .

Hi, I have a question, please help me dea Taralee. I have made aloe vera gel at home using fresh aloe vera leaf, carbopol and a natural preservative. Now, I want to add this aloe vera gel to a few of my other cosmetics. I wanted to ask that for other cosmetic products, do I need to fresh aloe vera gel or can I add the aloe vera gel that I made using natural preservatives? If I add aloe vera gel with preservatives to other products that i am making, then do I still need to add preservatives? What should be the quantity of preservatives then? Kindly help me with same!
Thank you 🤩

I see that you didn’t dilute the cream before measuring the ph. Do you have any trouble cleaning the ph meter after?
I explain why I do this in this video here - ua-cam.com/video/OfoZ6B40NSQ/v-deo.html
You can’t do this with just any ph meter
