  • There are many more adjustments to make, but this is progress. Every part placed correctly (correctly enough) on double sided tape to simulate solder paste without things getting messy. The machine lives!

That works very nicely. I've been following Stephen's project for some time, and this is the first time I've really heard the vacuum pump working. I'm not a fan. It must be a diaphram-type pump, which is why it's so loud and buzzy. I have been considering buying a Lumen, but I'd want to do some modifications. It's possible, for instance, to "store" vacuum in a tank (cars used to have vacuum reservoirs when they used vacuum motors to operate baffles in the AC/defrost ducts). Such a tank could be made from 3 or 4-inch PVC pipe, and the vacuum provided by a salvaged AC or refrigerator compressor (both pretty quiet) that would cycle on after several (maybe dozens) of pick 'n place movements. The control line that now starts the buzzy compressor on the Lumen would operate an air valve instead. The separate tank and compressor would have its own on/off control with hysteresis. I think I'll pass this comment on to Stephen.

I'm not sure but it's a fully open source project and is documented somewhere in the git repo.

1 year later would you say this is a reliable and repeatable machine ? ive been using a lite placer and found it to be tough to get going each time i use it

It's a pain every time I stop for a couple months or upgrade software or change the lighting in the room. It's awesome, but there's a reason I'm having a run of PCBs assembled by PCBWay right now. I just didn't have time to learn the vision pipeline system yet again. I have a small fleet of kids and a wife that demand at least some attention so it's my fault I don't find an hour or more at once to work on the Lumen. Eventually I'll get back to it. I do like it and it's great when it's working. I'd buy again if I had more time to focus on it.

Very much the same as me I find it a pain to move and try get it working with vision processing .. tell me have you tried increasing the speed of the movements ? I'm wondering if it is possible what speed is achievable with the machine as is ?

@@adamsaiyad3959 oh yes it can go much faster. My main speed bump seems to be in the vision side. It just takes a second or so to recognize part orientation with the bottom vision camera. I've since changed computers but haven't started to optimize motion.
