  • This 1972 Pontiac Catalina Coupe just arrived out of sunny Florida. Our Catalina shows no rust what so ever on body or undercarriage. All electrics are in good working order. The light yellow paint of this car is in very good shape. The brown leather interior was completely reupholstered a short while ago. This Catalina started out its life as a regular 400 Coupe but the former owner thought the car needed something more. In that retrospect he had the car fitted with 454 Big block engine which gives the car some serious power. The 4 speed automatic gearbox makes sure the car is still comfortable to drive. I short a perfect example of seventies Americana that is loads of fun to drive. Call 0031623679846 for more information.

The ONLY GM division that had 454 c.i. engines as standard equipment would be chevrolet....all other divisions used the 455 c.i. engine as an optional engine or as standard equipment.

I had a 71 Bonnie with the 455 HO 385 HP in it, I think the Catalina standard came with the 400 plant and only the 2bbl carb, although the 455 even with the HO option was available, am 70 now, was 22 then, can't remember too well anymore, miss those days.……………………….

Pontiac did not make a big block. The blocks from the 350 to the 455 are basically the same. Internal components varied to change the displacement and h p.
My 74 Cat had a 400 2bbl 185 hp with turbo 350 behind it. I got some heads (6x8 s ) a matching intake and with a bit of reworking in the engine compartment wound up with a sweet ride.
I'm in the process of building a 1966 Y series 389. New pistons,50 thousands over. Crower cam. HD rods from a 455 Super Duty .etc etc etc. It's autumn 2021. When winter rears it's ugly head in Northern Michigan I'll be out in the shop working on my baby.
Pontiac did not have a 454.

Pontiac actually used the same block from 287 cubic inches to 455. I was street racing my Pontiacs back in the 70s. You are correct, not a big block nor a small block. Not all engines from the muscle car era were small blocks or big blocks, that was a Chevy thing. If you had called anything but a chevy a small or big block back in the 1960s or 70s people would have looked at you like you were crazy. Sometime in the late 80s early 90s people who didnt know any better were calling all engines from the muscle car era small blocks and big blocks even though the manufacturers never did. Except Chevy. Example: Ford made a crapload of different engines but didn't call any of them small blocks or big blocks. But if you look at todays Ford performance catalogue everything is listed as small blocks and big blocks. That's because the people running things weren't alive during the muscle car era and they don't know better.
