I like kpop but I'm not obseesed. I like the music. I respect the idols and I know that I don't know them personaly and I'm glad to get to hear their music and seeing them reaching their dreams and the chemistry between them.
I feel like kpop is a comfortable place to me.
I know there are a lot of negative things in the industry like in any other thing but it also has a good things. At the end of the day, if you like the music, you can enjoy it.

It's tough being a person of colour and being into kpop. You know their society can be pretty racist to people and is generally pretty conservative. It felt like every dollar or view I gave to kpop it was supporting that as well and the system that makes idols that can be abusive.

I myself am not very well informed about the Kris Wu situation, but for Big Bang you left out the biggest reason why they had so much controversy: Seungri didn't just commit tax evasion, he was involved with the Burning Sun, a huge prostitution ring. While it's not clear what he did, THAT was the biggest reason for Big Bangs downfall

I'm saying this as a victim of sexual harrasment myself. For me, the issue of sexual abuse and harassment matters the most cuz I have been through it. And it gives the worst pain both physical and mentally, it also very hard to overcome the suffering that we have to go in the process. I don't think in my opinion that the victims of SA get enough justice and it's really tiring. These young girl fans actually don't understand what a SA victim goes through in reality. Also, the fact that they literally drugged and abused those girls while they're not conscious shows a very predatory behaviour and all of those girls were "MINORS". I could also get the fact that these predators want to manipulate the girls. We all know that minors are easily manipulated that's why the laws are being better and keep us safe. Also a lot of SA reports are not informed due to misconduct. Also asian countries, are not a good place for a better for a woman where crimes against women are that much common.

TVXQ was THE craze of Korea back in the day (even nowadays they and the former members) are like the standard of idols. One of them turned out to have accusations of SA/R toward multiple prostitutes. He was acquitted in court. It was a mess and it broke the heart of fans and it totally shocked Korea. I was a fan of the group, I no longer am a fan since the group splitted in 2009, my bias was (and still is) Xia Junsu, I'm already 34 and I've been a fan of Junsu since I was 17. I'm very proud of my boy(man)

GD's drug use allegations in 2023 was a case of police overreach, in the same case that drove Lee Sun-kyun to suicide.
The Still Life comeback has a perfect all-kill despite having zero promotions (and the fact that the members probably never even saw each other while recording). In hindsight, it feels pretty much like a goodbye song.
And Seungri's "scandal" reduced to a tax evasion case, with no mention of his connections to the Burning Sun trafficking accusation? or even his friendship with the Kakao chatroom group?
There is a lot of context missing in this video that a tiny bit of research would have provided. "I'm not diving too much into this" is the perfect description. I understand the point Zoe was trying to make but the oversimplification and lack of research detracts from it.

Have you actually done the research, though? I'm guessing you haven't. Most people don't actually know the ins and outs of the scandal, so it's good it didn't come up. I believed what everyone else believed until I took a deep dive myself. There was no evidence there was any trafficking at burning sun, but the cops had to satisfy the public and charge the most recognizable of the club owners with something. Turns out though that no judge would sign a warrant for his arrest for trafficking because there was barely any evidence, so sending it to trial would be a waste of the court's time. However, the military court took up charges for lesser crimes, even though there was little evidence for those, as well (they're a notoriously unfair court, but that's a whole other paragraph). It should be obvious by now with the GD and LSK drug investigation that the SK police and justice system bring famous people into an investigation because it improves their precinct's reputation, and once they're brought in, they need to satisfy the public with a show of justice. That's exactly what happened with burning sun. This info is out there and easy to find. There's a SK lawyer on youtube somewhere who breaks it all down.
@@caitthecat Exactly, Seungri was being investigated extremely thoroughly for AGES. It's just weird that the court would drag on the investigations for a particular individual this long even after the actual cases he was supposedly involved in closed too, they just kept trying to get something out of him. There has been plenty of instances when the justice system in Korea has been sketchy as heck, just look at the Lee Sun-Kyun case. This system seems like it goes with what the public is accusing rather than with actual proof, which is literally killing their celebrities off. Public's like; okay, now this celebrity is cancelled, for whatever reason, and the justice system will literally not rest until they actually find something against them. It's insane if you think about it, it's like society is basically deciding the fate of these celebrities because a mass majority hates them.

I still like EXO but I'm not in love with them anymore. Honestly, it made me admire them even more but not as husband material but as artists, the group is so talented, they have good music, their stage presence is awesome and the vocals, bro. I'm so happy that I can enjoy their music and their performances without the jealousy and other toxic stuff. I have my own life, they have their own life, my bias was (is?) Chen and when I found out he got married and has a little kid (now two) I was honestly so happy. Well we are all here for the same MUSIC, and it should stay like that.

So I discovered kpop at first with girl groups then went into BTS and boys groups.To be honest ,I was into boy groups at first by their visuals and became obsessed,started to read fanfiction and create scenarios but I just destroyed my mental health.Then some stuff happened in my family which made me Never read fanfictions again.By the time I started hearing kpop boys music rather than focusing on their visuals.Nowadays I heard some theories about how kpop is part of illuminati.I mean some people believe at these and some dont but this made me kinda angry with the idols.Anyways the last months Im living pretty happy and Im not the obssesed kpop girl anymore fortunately.But yeah I just saw thet kpop was too toxic for me most of the time so I did put a limit to myself and Im pretty glad for that.

Me who loves watching these type of videos but still LOVES KPOP is so f*cking funny .
I’m just too old (96) to enjoy 4th gen and later (an influx of 2000s babies), I feel the age gap and a lot of the music is not my taste (there’s a couple songs I like but not many). The industry also feels like it’s being forced down our throats at this point, it takes weeks for me to get rid of unwanted/unsubscribed kpop content if I happen to see a single short. Companies are also making channels and spamming viewers with ads, as opposed to skits/organic content from idols/groups like The Rose. They’re also pushing idols to the forefront of media attention before they’ve had ample performing experience or training; causing extreme backlash and criticism against very young people or minors. They’re setting them up to have short careers imo.

GD was my favorite member of Big Bang, I still get his solo music stuck in my head randomly sometimes. I loved Taemin of SHINee for a long ass time, I think that group was as close as i got to obsession, i can't even listen to their music after what happened to Jonghyun, it affected me that badly even though he wasn't my favorite member-- I even stopped listening to k pop for YEARS because of what happened to him and i'm still angry at how they treat their idols. but honestly i'm not hugely obsessed with any of these groups, especially now, i know a few songs and thats it, i dont really get obsessing to that level with real people as a rule... in the words of Xie Lian from heavenly officials blessing "be careful you don't believe in anyone too much... perfectly crafted illusions often shatter"
people make mistakes, i dont expect anyone to be flawless, and thus, i consider most of them pretty eye candy and dont go deeper.
literally Jonhyun's death affected me so badly that i broke down and cried when i turned 28 because i was a year older than he ever got to be, and it hurt to think about, he was so young, he didnt deserve that -honestly tearing up thinking about it- RIP Jonghyun.

As an aroace person who never had a crush (and honestly never liked pop or kpop and just found the video and thought it might be interesting, which it was although a bit concerning) I can at least talk about the people whose music or writing or art I enjoyed when I was younger, and I’d say I still like their stuff for the most part.
I got into the punk scene at a very young age, met a few artists (usually on accident and then I’d be left in stunned confusion as I saw them walking on the stage, I mean like, we talked and had fun, maybe shared a drink or two, but then I see them on stage and my brain takes a few minutes to process it) although not all of them. The ones I did meet were extremely friendly, had some pretty entertaining stories, and were generally very kind to me and others, but I suppose it’s kind of different in a way as a cultural context. I was into anarcho-punk (still am) and there everything tends to be small, not a lot of fans usually, and no separation between the band and the people there listening, and sometimes everything is literally free (but some went for cost value cause y’know, gotta eat somehow), and it’s common to just casually talk to the artist or have a conversation with them at the same level with disregard for the fact that they’re in a band you really like, to just talk to them as a fellow person y’know? Faults and all. I’ll admit though, a lot of them had problems, some were relationship ones although that was much rarer than things like drug problems, otherwise uh… problems with the cops and governments for certain statements and actions. One guy wasn’t that great, constantly drunk or high, and always there for the drama and often starting it, desperate for attention, and he was self conscious about it and had some self hatred (notable in a decent amount of his songs) and I felt bad for him but also slightly disgusted, but I could recognise that the guy needed help, he just wasn’t ready to accept it yet (and he still isn’t and after signing onto a record deal those problems seem to have only gotten worse, self hatred being a much more common theme in his music) but I just hope he can get out of the exploitative loop and actually get the chance to better himself. Another guy was just drunk, kept on stealing from the people he cared about and pushing them away, but that was mostly due to self hatred and also because he was worried that if they got too close he’d either lose them like other friends or he’d hurt them badly, he did manage to get himself out of the self destructive loop though, runs a free of charge rehab facility for others in situations like his when he was younger (broke, homeless and hopelessly addicted), although he has some pretty hysteric reactions whenever drugs or alcohol are a bit too close to him (except thats because in the past he felt like if he didn’t drink he’d probably just off himself, now it’s because he feels like if does he will just relapse and maybe actually do it) which is just a trauma response I suppose. Another guy, well she’s a girl now, pretty happy girl, doesn’t drink as often anymore, and she still makes music and seems pretty happy, and I’m happy for her, even if it sort of fell apart at the start with her wife divorcing her but she’s at least much happier now than she was then. Another guy just turned out to be absolutely terrible but I didn’t know much about him and my dad was the fan of his music, but he was a drug addict and still is, just now widely hated. Another guy wrote about being homeless, he still is, but at least he’s happy I suppose? Another guy had his band fall apart so many times it has been through over 50 members, but he is still friends with most of them except for a few who ended up to be absolutely abhorrent people, but today he continues to be an activist for queer, animal, immigrant, women’s and people of colour’s rights as well as an anarchist, today he’s focusing on wars like whats happening to Palestine, trans rights, and things like climate change, he continues to make music and be homeless by choice (he lives in a van, like the stereotypical hippie van kind). A decent amount though, well, they committed suicide so, definitely not a happy end, especially for those that I actually met and talked to.
As for why I know this much about them? Still in the punk scene, still listen to the music, I know a few and you check up on old friends normally, and I’m an autistic person who had punk as a hyperfixation when they were younger and honestly still does. (I still love dragons, books, anarchism and bacteria though.)
