My Judas Priest Playlist! • Judas Priest
In this Painkiller guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this incredibly powerful Judas Priest track note-for-note.
The tuning is standard tuning.
I probably don't have to tell you that playing this song is pretty intense. It takes a lot of endurance to get through it.
The main riff that opens "Painkiller" uses fast muted downstrokes to create a riff that just kills. They never let up from there and throw a ton of killer riffs at you throughout the song. I will demonstrate each riff in the order that each appears in the song.
There are also two guitar solos that I will cover note-for-note. The first solo is played by Glenn Tipton and is a LONG exercise in shred guitar pyrotechnics. From six string sweeps with tapping, rapid alternate picking, whammy bar abuse and legato licks, you can find it all in this solo.
Towards the end of "Painkiller", K.K. Downing gets his turn at bat. His solo is much shorter but still packs quite a punch with his selection of rapid alternate picked licks and sweeps.

Glenn tipton is a monster. The guy is so tasteful and restrained, even on crazy solos like painkiller. Hes the definition of someone who plays for the song.
@@Mad_Axe_Man125 Not an intend to insult Glenn, but hardest part in this solo is a lot of random stuff that even Glenn himself can't play the same twice. Michael Romeo for example has insanely hard solos that he play identical note for note in every show. But this comes down to personal preference. Some prefer flawless technique, some freedom and creativity that improvisation brings. Glenn mixes the two I think.

This is a brilliant lesson, but how the hell did KK and Glen even think of these insane riffs??
Glenn and KK wrote the riffs. Glenn composed both solos with KK performing the second and adding some of his flair pinch harmonics
I've always thought they really upped their game on this.

The amazing thing about the riff at 3:48 is that you, like almost everyone (myself included) plays that with all downpicking....but Tipton plays that with alternate picking which is arguably harder for a riff like that PLUS you can't even tell! It SOUNDS like he's downpicking, but he's not! What a machine.
Both he and KK are criminally underrated guitar players.
Honestly I prefer the constant downpicking (James hetfield style), it gives the sound more bite I think and just sounds so good

Did he say he put 20 years of work into the solo? I don't feel so bad now, it only took me a couple. That's a really hard one. With all the notes he holds for a long time and the phrasing, you wouldn't think it would that bad, but it is. You really made my day GL365 - I was pulling my hair out trying to play that solo and I was starting to think it was just me. And I know Tornado of Souls AND Mr. Crowley.
