Everyone slating this is just arrogant, this is revolutionary and visionary. Leaked documents have shown the Chinese and Russians have developed new super weapons known as “Care Bears” wild bears trained to hug and console the enemy to death. Conditioning recruits to tolerate inconceivable amounts of empathy is definitely the way to combat this new threat.
"if they are here, the army has deemed them suitable, it's our job to get them over the line" yup, that's the problem right there. Some office staff somewhere has deemed them suitable because they have targets to reach and the medical/ fitness standards have been lowered to help them meet those targets. It's now left to the trainers, who disagree with the nonsense, to cajole them up to passimg out parade by being nice, friendly and supportive. Then they go to their respective regiment and learn what the real job looks like.
I went through military training in the late 80's and the bullying was on another level I'm talking actual physical assaults as well as verbal degrading. We all made it though and it made me who I am today.
I joined the household division in 1981. We were physically and mentally broken. We were then built back to the best soldiers in the world. That mamby pamby, let's hold your hand, will destroy morale within the service. Whoever signed this mummery off needs their head checking...
I think there’s a fundamental loss of understanding here, for and against, within and without. The reason militaries throughout the ages presented a harsh and austere life was not simple communication but it was to encourage a particular mentality and worldview, one that is particularly out of fashion today, stoicism. If you’re shouting without knowing that or you refuse to shout without knowing that then you’re equally wrong, the intent is to apply discomfort as a means of encouraging a mental fortitude that could exist in a vacuum (heresy today of course).
The “shouting” in the UK was never over the top or silly like the US, watch old videos of the guards in the 60s - it wasn’t bullying or even aggressive and there was often some humour.
Yes , the military has always had a certain sense of humour... This article wreaks of humour , but it isn't... Our RSM used to scream for people to get off the grass and that the only person that could walk on the grass was God and that was only because he could not see him... (Even this would now no longer be possible as it would be sexist and no doubt they will all be allowed to walk on the grass to their hearts content).
@@theayeguy5226 As much as I have a lot of respect for the US military and your service as a Marine, yes in my opinion it is over the top - little things like shouting at your parents down the phone, eating in the canteen in silence sat bolt upright etc etc and the screaming in general is odd to me at least, in the British military the screaming is with a purpose not incessant.
Sergeant - first squad, standby to assault that enemy bunker! First squad private, sorry sarge, I'm a bit tired and I promised to phone my grandmother, she's not well you know. Another squad member - please could you stop shouting I've got a slight headache, also I left my ammo back at base because it's much too heavy, I feel for you sarge and I realised that if we don't take the bunker this whole attack will grind to a halt, but thats your problem not ours, perhaps you could ask the guys in the bunker to stop firing because they are being much too noisy, cheers sarge.
The comments on here are predictable. Personally I think this is a better more professional approach. Considering these are new recruits the last thing you want is to be treated like a 2 year old & shouted at for virtually no reason by another adult (supposed professional) who likely have in the past abused their position to feel like a big man. If shouted at it's less likely that the recruit will understand & correct what's wrong, if they take longer to correct it delays their entry & costs more money. They will still come under pressure & stress via firing exercises etc. At the end of the day it's about being professional & capable & ensuring good communication to allow people to thrive. If you think being shouted at by a person acting like a rabid dog for an error in miniscule detail is a good thing personally you need to look at yourself & I feel sorry for any of your friends or relatives. They will also pass on to units for further training. Note the article did not say recruits would not be shouted at where there's good reason & I'd expect repeat offenders to be dealt with more robustly. We need more people & different people entering the forces
Many Politicians/Civil Service that have are utterly useless people too... Yet they wave their 'service' in peoples faces and feel like they have to mention it often...
Have to make it more female and hugbox generation friendly. A military functions on discipline, not hug boxes and kind words. This will just ensure the warriors never join and the s-bags never get thrown-out. If someone cannot function under the pressure of shouting nor have the discipline to do what needs to be done, then they should not be there. Years ago, many services would use physical abuse, which was not helpful, so now the services are going to the extreme opposite. BTW, there is a time for empathy and also even complements. A smart drill instructor will know what is needed.
Words fail me, how pathetic, i guess the famous Monty Python sketch comes to mind, with the drill instruction on the square and he lets everyone go because they would rather be doing something else, so he is left alone to march himself up and down the square. Oh, dear my words didn't fail me. How pathetic, how criminal is this, it's part of the process, to build people up into a team and work together, it hardens you. I would how they will teach bayonet practice then, as thats is an evil one to teach if you cannot be angry with anyone. The laughing stock of the world, and that goes with the stupid beards they have today as well.
All that shouting at people who are really just there to learn to do a job was crazy. Why would anyone join a company that they know has bosses who all shout and put people down . They can instead get a much better paying job without all the hassles in civilian life. Now the change the military is making is fine , they still must meet the same standards only how to get there has become civilized
You’re training them to kill and potentially be killed. Showing empathy in the face of your enemy does not get you anywhere. Political correctness just continues to amaze me.
Gen z need treating with kid gloves as never had anyone tell them no before....hats off to any young person joining up but really a lack of shouting...never did me any harm and I served 1983 to 1991 and reactions to a shouted order are different from one said with empathy imho.
W..T..A..F... Its basic..basic prep for operating in the battlefield. Its meant to weed out those who CAN'T Hack abit of shouting and mental stress. Train hard fight easy, NOT, train easy and fight hard. Talk about completely miss the point of conditioning the youths minds for the worst humanity can throw at them, you absoloute WOMBLES!. This has got to be a joke?.
Shouting and screaming replicates the chaos the soldiers will encounter during war environment. It trains the soldiers focus on orders and instructions and follow them instinctively while hell is breaking loose all around them. Mind stress training like these will mean life or death in real war environment.
Shouting isn't to berate. It's one of many tools used to instill the level of discipline necessary to mold a civilian into an order taking war fighter. Combat will hurt your feelings, among parts of the mind and body. A front line unit can't afford to have people who are concerned about getting their feelings hurt. There are just somethings the protected will never understand.

An instructor explained to us during basic training that shouting instructions and orders were intended to get us into the habit of obeying orders instinctively, something that in the heat of combat could help keep you alive.
There’s nothing wrong with not shouting the SAS do their selection that way. The DS just tells you what to do once and if you don’t do it you’re gone. The problem with it in the rest of the armed forces is that they still need to be strict about it.
Isnt shouting and disicpline a test of mental fortitude? How are you going to cope in battle under fire if you havent been tested for such basic things prior?
I had to do basic training twice. First for the US Navy, then the US Army when I switched services. Being yelled at is useful and serves a purpose. It taught us to remain cool under pressure. This is going to have disastrous effects when Russian or Chinese artillery is hammering around your position and all of the sudden life isn't comfortable anymore. I'm not saying that the old way would've 100% prepared people for conventional warfare, but it worked in WWI and WWII, as well as Vietnam, so I think it's safe to say it worked enough.
I wonder if this is a natural progression of a 1st world country. We have everything we want and need, choice, freedom etc. Everyone then gradually comes to expect happiness, kindness and support. Then to protect that way of life we need a military, but the irony is we have a whole nation of people not tough enough to fight! Perhaps it is the bittersweet path of the western world.
Yeah, because the enemy is going to show you all kinds of empathy on the battlefield. The people making these decisions clearly don't understand what the point of all that yelling and hostility was. It's to inoculate recruits to having to live in fear 24/7, and to weed out the ones who can't adapt to it.
If I mind right, getting shouted at all the time helped soldiers get use to 1 aspect of a chaotic environments (war and conflict). When they go to those environments, they are going to freeze up more and become more of a hazard now 😔😔
Instead of being screamed at a potential soldier should be made to feel like he is valued that his instructor isn’t going to tickle his tummy in a politically correct way every time he spits out his dummy but is there to support encourage him or her through a difficult time or aspect of his or her training. Not everyone fits in someone could be getting bullied ostracised sexually harassed anything it’s all happened if you trust your NCOs you know they are approachable will listen then your more likely to approach them for help advice.Proffessional carrear soldiers are not stupid can spot a shirker or time waster very quickly we have very proud traditions in the army that heritage is special guys who have been through the ranks know what it takes to make the grade if a young guy gives his all puts his heart all his strength into training the NCOs know old soldiers don’t miss a heartbeat and will help him. There is a time for shouting learning to respect authority is important but it should be about teamwork helping encouraging each other that was the spirit in the old pals regiments my heritage forefathers the South Lancs regiment. That’s a true soldier a guy you can trust who would be there for you lifelong friendships are formed through the toughest of times I honestly think soldiers should be there for each other because in a time of conflict your life depends on the guy next to you also on your high level of training. We don’t want young guys walking away from the army because they are constantly being beasted screamed at we want world class carrear soldiers who can continue to pass on the knowledge to the next generations.Bottom line nothing wrong with a bit of empathy a few words of encouragement sometimes a old soldier who can guide a young guy in the right direction.Young men do compete at 60 I see things very differently from 40 years ago when I was 20 that comes from a lifetime of making mistakes hard earned knowledge a kind word can go a long way if someone desperately needs support.

Bunch of soft lads. Just what we need on the front line.
What a disgrace
who's going to be nice to them when they are in combat?
If you can't handle shouting then how the hell will you handle an RPG whizzing past.
They won't have to because they will be asked if they would like to take part in the next war... The answer will be NO!
No longer allowed. Greenpeace said so.
"Firm but fair" yet you're not allowed to shout at someone throwing the whole parade off in case you hurt their feelings
And there it is... The final nail in the coffin of an effective fighting force. This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Get ready for backchat and endless refusals to follow instruction.
If the army is so weak then who will hold the nation together? Nature doesn't like power vacuums.

Honestly, it's pathetic.
You can shut up as far as I am concerned the soldiers need to be welcomed before they get a telling off and that’s the more respectful way 😊😊😊
Ok men , ladies, them , they, we will advance in a line and retake the trenches.

it's not empathic to lessen effectiveness, discipline which ends up getting you killed , if recruits can't take it, then they have no place in the Army as being shouted at is the least of their concern if a conflict happens
Discipline turns a boy into a humble Man... Empathy turns a boy into a self-important man-child.
Good Grief! God help us to ensure that we meet our DEI quota with empathy and no hurty feelings

I was shocked by the culture. As expected from the British Army.👍
I joined the household division in 1981. We were physically and mentally broken. We were then built back to the best soldiers in the world. That mamby pamby, let's hold your hand, will destroy morale within the service. Whoever signed this mummery off needs their head checking...
There is a time for empathy but you also need to be tough and aggressive and not get upset because you are shouted at.
For their next update, rifles will be replaced with feather dusters.
Saw the title and just knew what and who to expect in the comments. Not disappointed!
If only the video was just about trolling. Sadly it's true and deserves all the criticism it gets.
"Over the top"? "Silly"? That is a Hollywood portrayal, not the real US Military. And its effective as hell. Turned me into a Marine. Thank gawd.
And if you take others reasoning here then in war troops live in trenches so why should troops/recruits not be kept in terrible conditions
It is unprofessional for any military!

No shouting for a crystal generation.
The decisions like this are made by 60 year old out of touch officers not the young generation
Ridiculous response have you served ?
You’re training them to kill and potentially be killed. Showing empathy in the face of your enemy does not get you anywhere.
Political correctness just continues to amaze me.
Gen z need treating with kid gloves as never had anyone tell them no before....hats off to any young person joining up but really a lack of shouting...never did me any harm and I served 1983 to 1991 and reactions to a shouted order are different from one said with empathy imho.
W..T..A..F...
Youre meant to be slighty scared of your Instructors, youre meant to listen to others shouting aggresively, whilst under pressure, to be able to respond appropriately when all others are losing their minds.
What are they Training Wimps
I hope they get tucked up in bed and read a bedtime story
Oh dear.
Shouting isn't to berate. It's one of many tools used to instill the level of discipline necessary to mold a civilian into an order taking war fighter. Combat will hurt your feelings, among parts of the mind and body. A front line unit can't afford to have people who are concerned about getting their feelings hurt. There are just somethings the protected will never understand.
what if the enemy uses CAPS LOCK on us. Will our special forces be trained to handle CLAPPING and SWEAR WORDS and skilled in the arts of listening to Offensive Comedy etc. And do they need parent's permission to enroll. Can we change the Poppy to Pansies too ; )
The armed forces are being hollowed out because of this woke nonsense. This captain talks about squaddies being made to feel comfortable? How will that create better soldiers? Unbelievable how out of touch these senior officers have become.

The guys who are on selection for the SAS are trained soldiers these are recruits. Big difference
Shouting is what saves your life ,You react immediately,

I went in close to 2 decades ago and I don't remember ours yelling much... they made our life a living hell with a low town

If I mind right, getting shouted at all the time helped soldiers get use to 1 aspect of a chaotic environments (war and conflict). When they go to those environments, they are going to freeze up more and become more of a hazard now 😔😔
wtf? I was going to post “WTF!” but I desired to be empathetic to anyone who chanced across it. WTF!
The most important factor in any organisation, be it military or otherwise, is teaching respect. It works both ways. 😊
